UK locks up 2 seed in SEC Tourney ...

  • With UK's win over Florida today, the 'Cats have locked up the 2 seed in the SEC Tournament.

Ole Miss also won today, bringing them into a 2nd-place tie with UK ... and Missouri and Alabama have yet to finish play today. However, UK holds all the tie-breakers in every possible scenario to get the #2 seed next week.

    Tie scenarios:

    ** Two-way Tie **
    2 Kentucky 12-6
    3 Ole Miss 12-6

Kentucky holds tie-breaker with head-to-head win over Ole Miss.

    ** Three-way Ties **

    2 Kentucky 12-6
    3 Missouri 12-6
    4 Ole Miss 12-6

Kentucky holds tie-breaker with combined 2-0 record against Missouri and Ole Miss.

    2 Kentucky 12-6
    3 Ole Miss 12-6
    4 Alabama 12-6

Kentucky holds tie-breaker by virtue of 1-1 record against Florida. All 3 teams would be 1-1 against each other, but both Ole Miss and Alabama were 0-1 against Florida.

    ** Four-way Tie **

    2 Kentucky 12-6
    3 Missouri 12-6
    4 Ole Miss 12-6
    5 Alabama 12-6

Kentucky holds the tie-breaker with a combined 2-1 record among the tied teams. Alabama is 1-2 among the tied teams, while Missouri gets the #3 seed by virtue of its 1-1 record against Florida.

Thanks for this analysis. I just finished looking at the scenarios as well, and came to the same conclusions. UK #2, Fla #1

Are there any other seeds locked in yet?

  • I don't think any others are visibly 'locked in' yet. But I haven't run down through the tie-breaker scenarios for the other teams. I'll keep a watch on things today and keep things posted as they become clearer.

  • That should lock in the NCAA bid. With ole miss, mizzou, fl, and tenn being the contenders for bids, we are 4-2 against those top tier sec teams. We have 21 wins, and finished second in conference. Lets win the sec tourney just to make sure though lol. Go cats!

    Tennessee beats Missouri

    1 Florida
    2 Kentucky
    3 Ole Miss
    4 Tennessee
    5 Missouri

    7 Arkansas

    ** Scenario #2 **
    Georgia beats Alabama
    Missouri beats Tennessee

    1 Florida
    2 Kentucky
    3 Missouri
    4 Ole Miss
    5 Alabama
    6 Arkansas
    7 Tennessee

    ** Scenario #3 **
    Alabama beats Georgia
    Tennessee beats Missouri

    1 Florida
    2 Kentucky
    3 Ole Miss
    4 Alabama
    5 Tennessee
    6 Missouri
    7 Arkansas

    ** Scenario #4 **
    Alabama beats Georgia
    Missouri beats Tennessee

    1 Florida
    2 Kentucky
    3 Missouri
    4 Ole Miss
    5 Alabama
    6 Arkansas
    7 Tennessee

NOTE: With the #2 seed, the seeds in UK's half of the bracket are 2 - 3 - 6 - 7 - 10. Vandy is locked in at the #10 seed.

  • I like our draw. If we can get past arky we matchup well with ole miss

    hoptownukfan

  • I think Alabama is going to be the three, right?

The first tiebreakers in a three-way tie is head to head, of which UK, ALA, MISS are all 1-1; the second in against No. 1 seed Florida, which UK wins by virtue of being only one to beat them; The third tiebreaker is win percentage over No. 2 seed, whcih would be Kentucky. Alabama beat UK, Ole Miss didn't.

  • Nevermind, the SEC doesn't really make it clear in their 3-team tiebreaker rules that once it's down to two-way tie they go back to head-to-head. Ole Miss is the #3.

Yeah ... I think you got it here. Once the three-way tie is broken, it goes back to head-to-head among the remaining two teams.

Matt, my reading is that once one of the three teams in a three way tie has been seeded, the tests them go to a 2 team comparison, starting back at the head to head level, putting Ole Miss ahead of Alabama.
