UK loses game, possibly Noel

  • Darrell Bird said...

Looked like he hurt it when he landed, not when he hit the brace. But yes, pray for best. I was taking photos of Nerlens at Texas A&M game when he went down. He was screaming then, too, even holding his knee, but re-entered game short time later. This, of course, looks much more serious but maybe that's just how reacts to pain.

That's what I was alluding to earlier. Sometimes the initial pain and horror of the situation gets to you......causing some panic.......and rightly so. Injuries are scary. It is fairly common to have a terrible initial reaction to the injury, but later find out the injury isn't as bad.

Evidently, it appears to be an ACL injury. This is from an insider of UK basketball.

Time will tell. Thoughts and prayer to Nerlens!

I do pray he will be ok. However that kind of hit could be mcl acl broke knee cap. however lets hope none of the above.

Without NN UK will be hard pressed to make the NCAA tourney

  • Hoping that the injury proves to be minimal and that Noel has a speedy recovery. He is a fine player and seems to be a good kid as well.

Having it in a stable cast does not sound good at all. Very surprised they do not have xray equipment at the arena

  • Probably needs an MRI to be definitive anyway.

Kentucky failed its most important test to date but the examination meant little in the grand scheme of the Wildcats' season with the visual of an injured Nerlens Noel.

    Hope the kid is ok.

It's standard protocol. Without knowing if there is a fracture or not, you must assume that there is and brace accordingly just in case. Plus having an immobilizer brace on can reduce the jarring and movement in the joint making it more comfortable.

Given the mechanism of injury, I would tend to lean this way. When the knee hyperextends particularly with force the ACL reaches maximal tension and can sprain. Ideally its intact and functioning.

My prayers to you Nerlens. Get well. You've got a long life and career ahead of you.

And how would you describe the MOI? Difficult to see from the angles I saw.

Agreed. The Athletic Trainers probably already have an idea of what the injury is. An x-ray really is going to show you if there is a fracture. To me, I believe it's probably more soft tissue than hard tissue......meaning that I don't think the x-ray will indicate a fracture. The MRI will display the soft tissues and confirm what the trainers probably already know through testing.

I am not a doctor. However I have seen a ton of things happen to the knee and how you react to that injury.
His injury looked horrid when you stop the frame of him being helped off the court his knee was not even close to being right.

I hope with the help of GOD he will be superman and be back soon.

Much of this is based on experience and clinical expertise.

From what I saw, he landed on an extended knee after his attempt to block the shot. As stated earlier the ACL is vulnerable in this position. Many women actually tear their ACL's in this fashion when then land on extended knees. Men tend to land with their knees bent slightly and then progress into more flexion. Noel could not do this. He landed on an extended knee and then hit the backstop.....extending the knee further and preventing it from flexing. "IF" there is an ACL injury it could've happened when he landed and it could have little to do with the backstop.....then again the backstop could've cause more injury. An ACL injury would certainly give the "wobbly" appearance since it is one of the 4 main stabilizers of the knee.

  • UK spokesperson: Nerlens Noel had further tests at Gainesville hospital, will fly home with team. No word on severity of injury.

ummmmmmmmm. From what I was just reading if it sweels up tonight they will not be able to do a MRI.
So they may be doing that tonight.

    Cross our fingers UK fans.

Thanks for the description. But watch again.

At the 1:20 mark, you see a valgus stress moment. ACL/MCL with possible medial meniscus and tib plateua fracture is my prediction. And women tear their ACLs more often than men for a multitude of reasons, not just landing in extension, although one that is taken in to consideration. But we can both agree that women dont often tear the ACL when landing, but more often when pivoting. And a ACL tear alone would not cause a wobbly knee. Collaterals play more of a role in frontal plane motion and if torn, would give off more of a wobbly appearance.

  • Louisville fan here, never posted on your site but I have to wish Nerlens a speedy recovery and I sincerely hope this doesn't impact his NBA future. He's a hell of a player and I can only hope that he gets back to that level sooner rather than later.

  • WDRB'S Steve Andress just showed us low angle replay from behind of Noel injury. Oh my. Knee buckled inward. Hard to look at it. Wish I could offer you all more info on Noel but I don't think it's fair to guess the extent of injury. Video/pics are gruesome though.

Im betting against a fracture not that Im not a medical professional but I did fracture my kneecap almost 7 weeks ago when I fell squarely on the kneecap on the pavement. Nerlens had knee pads on and the support he hit had padding on it as well. So I would think its an injury not involving anyhting broken/fractured. Nerlens works and plays so hard on every play he is involved in I hate this happened to him. I believe he will be ok in the long term and will have a great future in the NBA. I hope his family knows how much the BBN cares about him and all the prayers going out for him.

U get my up vote thanks for your love. He was going to be the no 1 pick for sure. If and a big if this is a bad injury he will still be a high pick for sure.

However he might have to come back to prove his knee is ok.

Lets just pray that it will be something that will heal quickly.
