UK loses starting QB indefinitely

Kentucky quarterback Maxwell Smith is out indefinitely, likely for the rest of the season, after undergoing surgery for a torn ligament in his left ankle.

  • I have to agree with the decision to lift the redshirt under these circumstances. 1 bad hit to Whitlow and we're right back to Newton otherwise. Hopefully, Jalen will stay healthy the remainder of the season and we won't have to use Towles and be able to retain his redshirt, but, in the SEC that's pretty unlikely.

  • Here's my question though.. Do you revamp your whole offense midseason to play to Whitlow's strengths or do you keep the playbook as is and go ahead and play Towles? Patrick's game is very similar to Smiths, but, Pat give's you a little more athleticism and scrambling ability. Whitlow is more elusive and a better runner than Towles and can throw the ball with some accuracy, but, doesn't give you the deep threat that Towles does and you don't have to recreate your offense with PT. What do ya'll think? What's the smarter move at this point?

  • good question. I would love to see Towles play with a weeks worth of reps behind him.

  • At least Towels will start getting in game experience.Maybe the "Hefty Lefty" can give him some good advice.

  • Gotta feel for Max Smith..kid has a golden arm. Hate this for him. Lets hope whoever lines up at Qb can get the ball to Sweat,Legree,Robinson and Collins. We have some explosive young playmakers, and our defense suddenly shows signs of coming around. A little bit.

  • This will definitely give Max time to get his shoulder healed as well. Tough break for him.

  • Our defense has improved alot since the beginning of the year, however, they're far from a complete shutdown machine, so, they're going to give up some points. Just not quite experienced enough or deep enough or talented enough to consistently force punts against SEC calibre teams. So, we're gonna have to be able to maintain drives more consistently, be able to capitalize on points when the opportunity is there and try and keep the opposing teams offense off the field enough to give the D some help keeping them fresh. The good SEC teams are going to score 30+ on our D, nearly everytime we line up against them and the middle of the road teams will still all put up 24 or better, so, whoever plays on the offensive side of the ball, better be able to score 24 or better or we have no shot at any SEC games...

  • Joker says that he is going to adapt the offense to fit both freshman's skill set. Both qb's can move around and Towles is a huge guy. Would love to see these guys come out and play well and lead us to an upset. Go Cats!!

The good news is that we're about to hit a part of our schedule that goes up against teams who are not nearly as talented as what we played the last two weeks or as against Louisville. If the defense continues to improve and the offense can get the run game going we've got a shot in 5 out of the next 6 games on our schedule.

I expect teams to load the box. Can we exploit that?

  • It has been a tough 12 months for Max Smith.

Injured shoulder late last season, eye orbital surgery in January, separated shoulder in the middle of September, and now, more than likely season ending torn ankle ligament surgery in October.

The curse of the Kentucky quarterback.
