UK students embarrass us all

  • Can't believe their isn't a single thread on this....

Flipping cars over and burning couches for a Final Four victory??? Burning couches for a regional championship???

We are supposed to be the University that knows what this feels like. You know, that's why we NEVER rush the court. I realize the current student body has experienced this type of success, but c'mon.

Are they just so idiotic they are looking for ANY reason to go to the streets? Is this even legitimate celebration or just wannbe rioters?

What should be a great time for the university instead has a bunch of UK idiots as the feature at Drudge burning a couch. With an appropriate headline, "April Fools".

  • Have no idea what the thought process behind all this is. Never understood how excitement could lead someone to want to destroy something.

    Truly embarrassing.

  • Think it's something to do with how the world is right now, look at the crap after the NHL finals right now, people have this idea that doing crazy stuff makes their lives better, sometimes it gets outta hand. I do wonder if I was at UK and a few years younger right now if I would be in the middle of it?

I guess you can't blame young people for being angry in the world right now, job prospects are poor, they get to watch idiots mismanage most countries, I'm 26 and I certainly feel like that to some degree maybe people's resentment is spilling over into sports? It's not like they can do much to affect the sham we all call politics....

  • Stupid, no doubt, but pretty typical of drunken frat boy culture. Burning your own couch is bad enough, but destroying someone else's car is terrible.

I have to admit that's a pretty funny headline. hah.

  • I was drunk and running wild through Euclid ave. in 98 with a few thousand just like me but I don't recall (of what I do recall anyway) anything like that going down.
It may have been due to the fact we had just won it all in 96 but I don't know. I figured things would get crazy after a 14 year drought but not to that extent and not with the NC game yet to be played.

It is sad that after a week of wall to wall national media coverage of the commonwealth's two programs playing in the final four, a tremendous game between the two, and for the most part a lot of class and mutual respect that many people's last image will be such foolishness.

Wrong. Every generation thinks they have it worse. The truth is that this generation has it easier than many previous ones but is far too self-involved to know the difference. Please don't brush off bad behavior.

I was out there (Woodland and Euclid) as a freshman in '78 and thought it was pretty crazy....a few cars got rocked back and forth......but after watching the news after the game last night, I was disgusted, embarrassed, and it took most of the luster off the victory for me. I am ashamed of some of the students who attend my alama mater. That both ploice forces have to be out there in riot gear and that firefighters are required....it really pisses me off! OP thanks for starting this thread...I really needed to vent on this.

  • The problem is that we make excuses for everything. I set a couch on fire and turned over a car because I was happy!? No because I was angry because my team won!? Everyone should be held accountable for their own decisions no matter their emotions or situation. Being young or old is not an excuse either. I hope they arrest each person involved especially in turning over the cars and the vandalism. It truly is senseless.

I'm with you on arresting the car vandals, but I don't really care if someone's burning their own couch in their own yard.

Andre Woodson just posted this: "Rumor has it Lexington is bringing in National Guard for tomorrows National Title Game!! Be Safe and Have Fun!! #ProjectLex Go Cats!!"

  • ABC News just led its prime time news show with this story and contrasted it with the good behavior shown by the UL fans. It truly is embarrassing. I live in California and have had to explain that it's just a few idiots (I hope).

  • all i have to say to this is welcome to the current world of today with 24 hour news networks, cell phone videos, and social media.

first off 24 hour news networks, not everyday is there enough news to make it so the news they do have they blow out of proportion.

and the cell phone videos and social media, in 1998 none of that was available like it is today so to have footage of the problems/rioting you would have had to have a network camera crew down there to get it on tape not today, everybody is their own network news camera crew.

i was not there is 1998 but my wife was, she watched all the videos last night and all she had to say was, nothing i didn't see or that did not occur after we beat Utah.

  • Absolutely ridiculous. Kind of takes away from the "we don't do ________, b/c we've been there before and we act like it" attitude that most UK bball fans have. This is the type of nonsense I would expect from some flash-in-the-pan program's fans when they make an unexpected run. I don't expect it from the fans or students of the most storied bball program in the country.

    mjdotson

  • I'm not defending anyone who has partcipated in this, but I agree with BT about the couch burning. I could care less and I remember it happening back in '98. As for the car vandalism somebody needs to pay up for their actions.

Most of the kids were born in the 90's and have no recollection of our last 'ship. Doesn't give them am excuse, but that is a fact. Add to that the movie Project X and you have a recipe for a bunch of crazy students doing dumb stuff.

In some respects yes the world is easier these days but that doesn't mean it's how people feel. Kids aren't equipped with that suck it up and get on with it attitude these days that my parents had, they are entitled and believe they should be handed things on a platter. Present them with the current economic situation, a lack of jobs, university being ridiculously expensive, healthcare on your side of the globe being a joke and you have a recipe for dissent.

Plus you can't discount the fact that protesting and riot police are becoming much more of an epidemic the world over, look at all the countries dealing with that kind of thing, even China is having to quell rumours of a coup!

I'm not trying to brush off bad behaviour, I'm just musing on why people are doing and can find the thought acceptable at least in the moment.

Also of course the mob mentality is clearly a part of it, these are the actions of people who would never do such when alone or in a smaller group!

totally agree with this. It's what they say in football after you hot dog it, act like you've been there before. Because all of us know that this will not be the last time we are in this position!! Took all of the excitement and enthusiasm I had for the championship game. Truly embarrased seeing kids jumping on cars drinking and so forth.
But yeah, a friend posted this on facebook. Rick James "F*** yo couch!! UK Fans "F*** MY couch" that made me laugh a bit

yeah, they weren't turning over and burning their own cars. And if this was you and your car was being flipped over, don't think you would have this "kids will be kids" attitude

  • 27 arrests have been made for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. 2 for arson.

Exactly what kind of pro are you?

I bet those parents were so proud to see their kids in those pictures the other night. Believe I'd be calling mine and telling him to get his ass out of there and act like he has some sense.
