UK students embarrass us all

Wrong. Every generation thinks they have it worse. The truth is that this generation has it easier than many previous ones but is far too self-involved to know the difference. Please don't brush off bad behavior.

Oh I disagree. This generation has known more to die in war than any in the last 40 years. Their friends, family members etc. this generation has grown up in the worst recessiOn in the last 80 years with all of them knowing somebody or personally effected by it.

Frankly, when I was at uk, while we never destroyed a car we did some really stupid stuff. If they had stopped with burning couches and not messed with cars it wouldn't have been a big deal. If a frog had wings....

Hopefully everything turns out ok tonight...

I do not think it is a generation thing but more like some dumb college kids. To say it is the generation is overstating it just like when the media portrayed all that garbage as the entire city of Lexington not just a small number of morons. I think the police and school administration should get the videos and come down hard on some of these kids. Set the standard for punishment and ensure that you do everything to deter this ish from happening again. Instead of letting thousands of fans getting into a small area in front of the Tin Roof why don't the police put in barriers and control the size of the crowd. I have been to the derby where some times the police have funneled the crowds to keep violence down.

  • Most people across the nation think negatively about Kentucky to start with and things like this reinforces their believe. I have always believed that you should treat other peoples property better than my own. What would these people think if it was their property that was beening destroyed? I also think that we should not paint all the students with the same paint brush. All of the people involved may have been students, but we don't know for sure. They need to find a area that the students and any one else could go to celebrate that could be kept under control if we win tonight.

That's a solid point. Unfortunately everyone knows that it only takes a few idiots to make an entire group look like fools. Take the Penn St. Fiasco for example, when Paterno finally (and deservedly) got the axe, there were thousands of students out peacefully demonstrating protest as well as showing respect for the victims, but a very small (and very ignorant) group tainted the entire group by acting like ass clowns.

There will be thousands of people in the streets tonight if we win. Its going to happen. There will undoubtedly be some idiots doing idiotic things. That's also going to happen. All we can do is hope it doesn't get too out of hand and no one gets hurt.

Its a shame really, the students and fans should be able to run out and scream, cheer, and celebrate without such ridiculous behavior, but it has become exactly that.

I think QLW is partially right in his theories, as are others. Its a combination of things, but one thing is certain imo that today people (not just young people) are looking for opportunities to behave his way. Why is a much more difficult question.

I'm not defending anyone who has partcipated in this, but I agree with BT about the couch burning. I could care less and I remember it happening back in '98. As for the car vandalism somebody needs to pay up for their actions.

Most of the kids were born in the 90's and have no recollection of our last 'ship. Doesn't give them am excuse, but that is a fact. Add to that the movie Project X and you have a recipe for a bunch of crazy students doing dumb stuff.

Wrong. State street was nothing like 1996 or 1998 according to the police. The police have said that Euclid and Maxwell were great. People celebrating and enjoying themselves. State street was like nothing that has happened here before. Burning cars and throwing bottles, rocks, and cans at police officers did not happen in 1996 and 1998. FYI, if you plan on being out tonight the police are not much in the mood to be pelted with cans, bottles and rocks. You may get what you ask for if you do that tonight.

  • In 98 there were absolutely fires around campus. Not at Euclid and maxwell but there were fires set to couches etc. Social media and modern technology absolutely played a role in the attention this for.

  • Forest Gump said "Stupid is as stupid does". This is all just stupid. I'm not going into what has happened in my past, but your past and present doesn't give you an excuse to act like an idiot and do stupid stuff. Bookem Dano!

    TheBluesBrother

  • I couldn't believe it when I heard about it. Especially since it was not even a win for the championship. I've never understood these type of actions and doubt that I ever will because the people who do it can't explain their actions. It's scary to think that many of these individuals are our future leaders. Really your favorite team wins a game and you are so elated that you decide to destroy property, your campus and parts of the city you live in to celebrate. Insane!

  • Can't fix stupid! This behavior has happened in the past, the difference is that it's more widespread and better covered through the plethora of media outlets, social media, and all that jazz.

  • I would have hoped our students were better than that. Obviously not! Those responsible are an embarrassment to themselves, their parents and the University of Kentucky and hopefully will be held accountable for their actions!

Reports in the national media of "numerous fires" and a non-fatal shooting in the "riots" last night, so I would say the answer to your question is no.

    mjdotson

  • How does anyone know these offenders are UK students or not?

    vhcat1970

  • your so right...just blowing news up for the ratings...saw the same in 96 and 98...see it in New York when the Yankees win...in detroit when the Pistons won it all...seen it in Bama, LSU,... and Superbowl champs...makin a mountain over a moe hill to me...get over it...

  • The dude that was shot had to have his foot amputated... ugh...

  • I showed up at work today (in florida), and everyone was asking me about the shooting and the fires instead of the game. . . They all know I'm a huge UK fan. . . sucks.

  • Yeah this was very embarrassing but the "riots" will be forgotten in a week. #8 will live in the banners forever. I still say the creationism museum in Kentucky is more embarrassing.

  • This is really ridiculous. First thing my UOfL fan father in law asked me about. Absolutely ridiculous.

Same here, except in AL. I got a lot of "you would expect the UK fans to act like they've been there before" comments.
