  • I've been one to voice frustration with UK and IMO their lack of facility upgrades. Great job getting this done!!! Looking forward to hearing/seeing more about the future.

Yeah I'm glad they're moving ahead quickly with this so they can get it done before the season starts.

What do you think will be the next item on the agenda will be when it comes to football upgrades? Will it begin next season?

  • Good to hear they are moving forward. The BoT sure sounds like a dysfunctional lot...

    DACats86

  • Did they have to approve it? I thought we were going solely through UKAA funds?

  • Apparently they had to "rubber stamp" the project. It would have been interesting if they had said "no" . . . This Peek guy seems as anti-athletics as they come.

It depends on what direction they decide to go. If they go piece by piece we may see them add the "recruiting room" somewhere, possibly attached to Nutter or something.

If they decide to really go forward with upgrading the entire facility then we may see them revamp CWS to add the new pressbox and luxury suites and work in the recruiting room overlooking the stadium as they had planned before.

At this point it's anybody's guess as to what they do. It may depend on the new UK president and whether they can get his support.

  • Luckily Jim Stuckert gets it.

This Cheryl Truman is a real piece of work. Believe she was the one who penned the article slamming the financing arrangements for the scoreboard. She then transitioned to writing a terribly negative article regarding the new President, again quoting unhappy faculty members -- this time, the faculty members were unhappy because Dr. Capilouto could not provide terribly detailed answers to faculty member's very specific questions about certain issues at UK (questions he could not possibly be prepared to answer from one visit to campus and the interview process). Cheryl Truman was probably the one who had the LHL post on their website a copy of a Complaint filed against UAB for gender discrimination (of course, the Complaint merely states allegations, not proven to be true, and they did not link UAB's side of the story). Very reminiscent of the garbage that appeared in the LHL just after Rich Brooks was hired. I really don't understand how the LHL makes it in Lexington.

  • Most importantly, tip of the hat to Barnhart for getting this piece approved, financed, and moving. Look forward to seeing it this fall.

  • One of the things I really liked about Auburn's scoreboard (other than it being in HD) was the running scores of other SEC and Top-25 games on the sides of the scoreboard. I hope they implement that feature at UK.

    DACats86

  • ^ Yep. If ribbon boards are included, I've seen stadiums keep scores updated on those as well. At Commonwealth, I only recall seeing them show scores at halftime, so I'd constantly be trying to get score updates on my phone. Will be nice not having to do so.

    Jeremy Grey

  • With financing approved, I wonder if UK will be generating some sort of release re the plans for the new videoboards and sound system? Would be nice to see some positive publicity on football facilities.

I think the ribbon boards around the facing of the upper deck is going to make for a change that's even more drastic than people can visualize right now.

Agreed. The ribbon boards should make Commonwealth look a lot better on TV as well.

  • Two things, one I found the funny, the other pissed me off.

    The Funny:
"A million here and a million there, soon you're talking about real money," he said.

    What Pissed Me Off:
Trustee Everett McCorvey, director of UK Opera, said Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart told him the loan proposal would have brought the university $150,000.

So they turned away $150,000 when they were staring in the face of budget cuts? Good decision making. They see athletics and automatically assume that they aren't getting anything in return. Grow up. UK is self-sufficient. They don't take a dime from the university and when they do, they pay it back and then some. We have been gracious by not spending much and making sure the necessary bonds go to the medical facility rather than sports.

This was the single most important and pressing project to get done for football. You can cover a lot of other issues with a state-of-the-art stadium, which is very reliant on the 'wow' factor that comes with sweet scoreboards, sound system and gameday experience. This is a huge step in that direction.

Matt - I agree with you on your assessment. Not only will the scoreboards and sound system improve the game day experience, but they will make the stadium look much more up to date on the inside. It also may jump start the fundraising for other major projects on the stadium. Count me as excited.

  • Ribbon boards are awesome for those that haven't seen them. They will make the stadium a lot more aesthetically pleasing. I'm glad this was approved. We can finally move on and look forward to the results.

I've never quite gotten how the recruting room conected to CWS was going to work I'd love to see a drawing on how they interlock. I think I like that idea but I'm not sure.

    flknopp

  • a drawing? pbbbbbbbtt Really, you expect there to be drawings? We don't even have drawings for something that's approved let alone some pie in the sky dream.

I'd imagine it would look something like Arkansas' but with the endzone closed in.

It would be sweet if they could remove a portion of the bottom section in the East endzone and have that be the entrance for the team. You could have a connection with Nutter Fieldhouse and the current Commonwealth Stadium locker rooms.

  • Through use of my "sources," "contacts" and immense influence with Mitch and the UKAA, I have become privvy to some additional information about the new scoreboards. First, because of minor budgetary concerns, there will be only one new scoreboard. I have secured the detailed design plans for this board, but you must agree to not divulge them to anyone else outside of HOB. The drawing is shown below.

Also, I have learned that the ribbon lighting has also exceeded budget, but in a display of generosity heretofore unheard of by an AD at UK, Mitch has donated his used outdoor Chrsitmas lighting to be strung in replacement of the ribbon boards.

    (I jest, sort of...)
