UKFB: Highest number of 5 & 4 stars at one time

  • With the amazing whirlwind that has swept UK football in many years, I was wondering what the highest number of five stars and four stars UK has had on their roster at one time and what year(s) that occurred? Go Big Blue!

  • Interesting question. I would like to know as well.

  • Have we ever had a 5 star other than Tim Couch?

    BlueGhost

  • Micah Johnson. And I know we had one more. I'm just at a loss on the name at the moment

  • What was the name of the big offensive linemen from the western part of the state? He only played a few years and had to quit due to injury and academics. It was about the time RB became coach. Wasn't he an 5 star that we beat TN to get?

  • Johnson was the USA Today defensive POY and SI national POY You'd think he'd have been a 5 star. And didn't he and Couch come in here back to back years?

I believe that was Micah Jones but I don't believe he was rated better than a high four star by any recruiting service.

And as to this thread as a whole, there are never more than 25-30 5 star rates kids per year and a system of rating as kids as such has only been available for wide public commercial consumption for maybe 10-12 years. So any way of determining how many 4 and 5 star kids has had in any given year prior to 10 years ago is purely speculation. There isn't really any reliable documentation save what is available on the internet.

  • I wasn't aware that the rating system has only been around for 10-12 years. Thanks!

  • Micah Johnson was a four star on Rivals, as a DE IIRC, which is of course where he should have played at UK. Kid had to starve himself to play linebacker. He would have been a 275 pound wrecking ball at DE.

Oh boy, here we go again with the LB vs. DE debate. People tend to forget how good he actually was at LB. First team All-SEC is not too shabby.

  • Micah Johnson was 5 star..he was the #1 overall player untill he commited to Uk..then he fell a couple spots. Dennis Johnson was also a #1 overall..as was Couch. Micah Jones..the big OG was a 4 star if I remember correctly. Could be wrong there though. Never panned out. Personally..I cant remember a class with more than 3 or 4 combined 4star/5star kids. Not saying there hasnt been..just cant remember one.

Read the link. The kid starved himself to get to 255 to play LB at UK when he should have been getting thicker and playing DE.

  • Wdaukfan - Are you talking about Aaron Miller? He was great, but not a ***** recruit.

  • What is this "5 star" you all speak of? lol

Micah Jones was just a 4 star, but, had to give up football because of a chronic back problem.

  • It would be nice to have 3-4 4 star HS players and 2-3 4 star Jucos in every class these next 3-4 years and from there, consistently have a roster with 20+ 4 star or better players on it.. That would be sufficient to compete with just about anyone in the country..

What? He didn't have the length to be a wrecking ball DE and never played a down with his hand down in HS. I wish people would just stop with this nonsense. As it was he was a wrecking ball multiple year ALL SEC MLB. Geez.

The only 5 stars that we have had in the last 15 years were Tim Couch, Dennis Johnson & Micah Johnson. Micah was a 5 star on ESPN & Scout, but not Rivals. He was also rated as the #2 DE prospect in the country even though he played LB in high school. Couch & Dennis were both consensus 5 stars & ranked #1 at their respective positions out of high school. You can do a google search to find out additional information about each of them.

By my calculations, Mackensie Alexander [if we get him] would only be the fourth top 50 recruit for UK in the last 15 years. That in itself is pretty terrible for an SEC program, but I imagine we will get a few more over the next few years. If we had any other top 50 recruits, please let us know because I might have overlooked someone.

Micah is just as tall as Freeney or Dumervil. And he weighed nearly 270 in high school. He was exceptionally fast and monstrously strong but stiff. This is why he was listed as a D Lineman by most scouts.

I watched every game he played in while at UK. I know what I saw. A guy who should have been a DE weighing about 275 like his body wanted him to. .

    ShoesSwayedBlue

  • Scouts were torn about Micah, some saying he would be a great DE, others a great DT. However he wanted to play LB and that's the biggest reason he came to Kentucky - that and the fact we brought in his brother the year before. He was rated the #2 SSDE by Rivals.

He was repeatedly taken advantage of in pass coverage as a LB. I believe he should have been moved to the D-line and he would've encouraged to grow into that 290-300 pounder that would have wreaked havoc on the opposing O-line.

  • What's pretty astounding is the UK basketball team has 12 scholarships a year to give and the football team has 85 and we have at least 10 4-5 star players on every BB team since Calipari's been there and we've only had a handful or 2 of 4-5 star football players in the last 2 decades.. Add in the fact that there are numerous powerhouse BB teams outside the BCS schools, like Memphis, Villanova, GTown, Temple, UNLV, Butler, etc and only a handful in football, makes it even more astounding..

Again, not just the height but the reach. MJ does not have near the reach of Freeny or Dumerville. The kid had a great career at UK why not just leave it at that.
