UK's commitment to Football?

  • Lots of posters don't wan't want to read this. One glaring example of UK's new commitment to football will be how many "Borderline" kids get into to school. It's really not as cut and dry as some would think. The SEC dosen't mandate anything about admission standards. There are loophole, exceptions, and waivers that can be used to get a kid in school. The previous staff was not interested in using those options. It was part of Jokers downfall. The new staff has already shown us they play hardball. This should be fun to watch. Example: It's obvoius Sheldon Gibson is shopping around for his best deal. OSU said no. Now WVU has said no. Lets see if Stoops can find away to get him in school?
. By the way..... This is how they play football in NorthEast Ohio....Hardball.

I agree with your theory. However, the specific case you give above may have more problems that just grades. I don't know that to be fact, but if schools start turning away an elite level talent many times there are off the field out of the classroom problems.

  • If they can't get it done in the classroom, they generally don't get it done on the field either. Work ethic is work ethic. Laziness will follow. Under Joker some players got away with being lazy at practice, which translated to their play on Saturdays. Based on what we are seeing already, Stoops will not tolerate it. Stoops knows how hard these guys are going to have to work to bring this thing to the next level. If they don't have the work ethic, this coaching staff knows they will not make it and thus will not bring those types of players to the program. IMO

These schools have to be saying no because of grades, and I'm not sure how a deal would work out for him if he doesn't have his ducks in a row with grades. No matter what, we can't sign a kid who is not going to be eligible this next season.

Care to elaborate on those loopholes, exceptions, and waivers that can be used to get kids in but we haven't been using?

  • I had a District Judge write a letter to the Admissions Board to get me in. It happens alot. The problem is on the back end. Uk get's penalized if they bust out and don't graduate(See UCONN basketball). It appears Stoops is a gambler.

There is a difference between being admitted to UK and meeting NCAA requirements. I don't see that we have failed to get kids on campus because they met NCAA requirements but failed to gain admittance.

What players has this happened with?

  • Why you would you ask that? I don't ususally keep track a recruits that chose to go to another university. UK is not about to anounce that information to the public. The specfic example I'm aware of is Keiland Williams who played at LSU. After a year at Hargrave Prep he still could not get an SAT score/GPA to meet admission requirements. Lots of schools wanted him. LSU let him on a Special Exemption that is set aside for Players that need help. IMO this happens alot. IMO this is what Gibson is shopping for. IMO the previous staff would not have returned his phone call.

Because Urban doesnt play "hardball"? I think you need to look at this more than just grades. If a kid is to the point to where he doesnt qualify to play sports, clearly there is more to it. Its not because hes trying too hard to learn...if it were up to me...I wouldnt take anyone thats borderline. Borderline kids who dont care about their grades have a much higher chance of dropping out eventually or not living up to who they need to be on the field because the laziness carries over from the classroom. If playing hardball is taking a kid that is too lazy to get qualified and show that he can be mature enough to work hard in the classroom as well as on the field...I wish him the best but I do not want to see him at Commonwealth on Saturdays.

You know not all kids are the same. Sometimes it's not laziness that keeps em from succeeding in the class room. Some really have to struggle just to keep passing marks. I will be glad to see any kid wear the blue and white who gives it his all even if they are "borderline" in the class room just so they give it 100% effort. I think thats all anyone can ask of them. GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I played football. So I do understand that if kids struggle in the classroom it always isnt about laziness. But if something is interfering with them understanding or paying attention or whatever it is in the classroom, they do not belong on the football field. They will get hurt. It takes a lot of studying to be a football player at the level we are talking about here. Its not all muscle and fun. Its a lot of brain and quick thinking. So if you are telling me you can give a kid a playbook and they can memorize that and know it like the back of their hand but you give them a school book and they just dont get it...Im sorry..I dont buy that If a kid has that issue, then he needs to spend that much more time in the classroom and less time on the field.

  • Op has no clue what he is talking about.

    A. Sec has standards that exceed NCAA. Almost all that exceed NCAA are tied to juco's and transfers.

    B. uk's standards are the minimum sec standards. Always have been. We've never not taken a kid for academic reasons that met sec standards.

Nothing has changed. Only thing that has changed is we now have an aggressive staff with great connections.

Please educate yourself before posting about this kind of stuff.

  • That fine. You can beat up my opinion if you want. I truley think the biggest thing holding UK football back is it's fan base? I guess you reported the limo rides to Sandy Bell as well?

. Things are changing folks. For the good.

  • Anyone know what this is?

    http://www.atlantasportsacademy.com/student-life.html

It's a feeder school for WVU located in Dawsonville, GA. The offer Gibson got ( and turned down ) was to sigh and enroll here.

    Follow my logic on Gibson:
OSU - Too many scholly reductions to take a chance.
WVU - Sign and place offer
    UK - ?

You opinion is wrong. The FACT is that uk can't bend NCAA and sec admission standards. You can't do it.

    Stop digging the hole.

Ps: nothing wrong with uk providing transportation to the airport. And they aren't limos. It's sedan service.

  • All expenses on an official visit are covered by the university. Kentucky did nothing wrong by sending a driver to pick a kid up.

  • I have read some dumb stuff before but this once ranks up there. The OP claims there are "waivers" to get into school that UK doesn't currently use, but then cant give an example of where that has actually happened before.

Good stuff, keep up the good work!!

PS: Maybe you can get a judge to review your posts before sending out your opinoin next time.

  • argumentum ad hominem...why is is that so many fans in our fanbase genuinely dislike one another? Can't you guys argue the points without attacking the poster? If you feel you need to do that there are 13 other fan bases you can go attack.

It's hard not to take issue with a poster when he lies or is 100% clueless. Nothing in his op is remotely close to the truth.

may be difficult but it's certain not impossible and definitely worth the effort.

How about..."OP, I think you may have some of the facts wrong. For example, A, B, C..."

Calling people "liars" really implies that they are trying to deceive and I don't think that's the spirit of this post, or many others where people get called out as being "liars".

If there's a situation where that's going on then the moderators of this site need to step in and remove those folks from the board entirely to maintain 1) Quality and 2) Civility on the site.

You would likely be happy to have a beer with the OP at a UK FB tailgate, so why not extend a hand as a fan on this board and let's ALL save the attacks for our true enemies.

You can't get a "waiver". You can get assistance on the test or more time. But you have to make a score.

In terms of disagreeing. I'm not disagreeing. You are factually incorrect in your original statement and I am pointing it out.
Just because you say something doesn't make it true.
