Uk vs WKU

  • I watched WKU play bama this weekend and although WKU lost I was impressed with the physical play of their defense. UK will have to match WKU aggressiveness on defense. Our defense has me concerned about this game. WKU is a much better team than Kent St, also WKU defensive line went toe to toe with maybe the best Oline in the country. This game is going to be interesting and on top of that some of the WKU players have no respect for UK. This has to be a statement game for UK. WKU had Saban very concerned because he realized that WKU is pretty good. Does anyone else have any concerns about this game ?

  • I think UK will be fine on offense. Keep the no huddle going and throw the ball around. Thats the biggest difference this year. UK was dependent on running the ball last year.
Still worried about the defense but there isn't a Rainey in their backfield this year.

What bothers me is we had trouble stopping a big 230lb RB for Kent St that I could outrun at age 40. WKU is one of those teams that when you play them you don't want them to hang around. You have to score and score often putting them away.

But you couldn't have tackle him either.

I don't tackle 230lb guys that are trying to run me over ;I let my 45acp do all the stopping and tackling.

  • Only thing i worry about in this game is they had 6 sacks against Bama, we can not let Max get hurt in this game or we are in trouble for the rest of the yr.
That DE and LB for Western has to be blocked. Oline better step up this week

  • I can tell you, WKU got torched through the air by Bama, and they have a former 4 star DB in Dowling playing in their secondary. The only knock I put on Bama is that they are a 3 yards and a cloud of dust kind of team, wear you down, and shove the run game down your throat, so their OL focus more on run block than pass. But no one here in BG or at WKU take UK seriously and have marked it up as a W already, and think this will be a cakewalk which is exactly how they acted during the NCAA tournament when they were about to play UK.

UK is better at throwing than Bama, if you look at recruiting, Bama doesn't really recruit top notch 5 star QBs, more lower ranked 4 stars and high 3s who are good game managers, none of the QBs they recruit seem to light up the stat sheet when theres a stable of 4 or 5 RBs with 2 of them being a 5 star and no one below a 3 star.

WKU doesn't have the depth nor the same amount of athletes across the board to compete if UK comes out strong unlike last year. Mismatches everywhere when spliting dubs and spreading it out, and not giving their Dline a chance to get going before they have to turn around and get set again and wear them down, then run draw plays will kill this defense at WKU. UK might give up a lot of yards, but a bend but don't break defense is better than one that gives up a 73 yard run to a Austin Peay RB, or a secondary that gets torched when teams run level routes against them.

Sorry this is a long post but I actually get to see a lot of practice at WKU being a student and broadcast major and doing a sports show on the radio, and I can tell you, WKU fans and coaches seem over confident after beating a very very very bad FCS school at home and then whenever they get a hard knock fumbling the football. I would love UK to just air raid this game and shut up these fans here who think WKU is the next Boise State or TCU after one 7-5 season. If UK shows up and plays hard and is motivated by last year, they will put up more points than Bama easy (if no turnovers occur) but could also be in a fight to light up the scoreboard if the defense can't make stops either.

Nice post and I agree that Smith and UK's WRs will give WKU fits. Bama seemed content to make it a grind it out game and played very safe, typical Sabin style. Can't argue with the results. I think this will be a good test for UK's D and hopefully they can prove that they have improved.

I hate to break it to ya but UK is in trouble the rest of the year no matter who is QB. These games UK should win but the SEC is another animal all together.

Was Bama overlooking Western? Maybe a little but Western saw a real SEC defense that they won't see when they play UK.

UK just needs to win, to hell with the score.

Confidence is a big equalizer in sports and their is no doubt in my mind that Western thinks it will beat UK.

This will be a hard game to win and a harder game to lose.

Exactly the point, people here at WKU consider UK to be ther 3rd most talented team in the state and they believe that they should have won last year, but fail to think about how UK could have scored more has WRs caught the ball when they were wide open after beating the DBs down the field.

I can tell you this, WKU is not that comfortable throwing he ball around to the WRs at all. The Rbs and TEs get more targets and they have big TEs but none are really threats besides Doyle bc of a lack of speed. But I agree UK just needs to win, and hell, win by over 20 and put up more than 40 and hopefully fans start filling the stands a lil more.

Everyone is entitled to here opinion and our seem to be very far apart on most thing including what u just said.
I know I set around with my big blue shades over my eyes and under my UK hat.
UK "most" yrs will upset someone that theres no way we can beat.

We have 1 win, if we when this game thats 2, beat Vandy, Samford, and 2 more and for this yr thats a good yr, in my opinion.

And before everyone starts that 6 wins and I'm happy BS thats not me I want to win every game every yr, so take that some where else. But yes everything over 6 this yr would be huge cause that would mean we pulled off at less 3 upsets.
Other than WK, Samford and maybe Vandy we will more than likely be under dogs by at less 7 or more.

I went back and read what u said again, and ur right in just about everything u said.

We could have anyone at Qb, Rb, Wr..

If we dont get our Defense going yes it will be a long yr....
Our Defense stays like it is we may lose this weekend and every game but Samford the rest of the yr.

This is one difference between the basketball crowd and the football crowd it seems. The basketball crowd talks about being great and the football crowd talks about being good. The fans have the power to raise the bar and I believe it will happen. We, including me, need to stop being stereotypical Kentucky football fans. Success needs to be defined in wins and losses period! Let's talk about individual statistics after a series of wins.

  • I agree with basketball fans vs football fans point.
I dont believe that we can compare the to sports to each other, so much money is poured in for the basketball team it boder line insane, while our football program seems to be the step child thats starved for attention.
I love UK football and hope and pray for a great team yr in and yr out. I also believe win can have a great football team at UK but this is the SEC and just because u have a great team doesnt mean u still want lose a few games.
Not sure how we will get to where we want to be as a football school, so i won't pretend I have the answers, but I cant wait till the day people circle us on there schedule as a game they know they cant win.

Don't put too much stock in the Bama game. WKU was a trap game for them coming into last week. They may have gotten a little over looked but, that won't happen here.

  • we will beat wku by 17+ it could be close but I doubt it. WKU sold out to stop the run at all cost. They try that against UK and we will absolutley torch them through the air.

Our defense had better show up, they showed some improvement late against Kent St but they still have a world of improvement to make.
