UofL/Pitino's biggest problem

  • While I do think the game has passed Rick Pitino by on a lot of levels, I think his biggest problem is his lack of commitment to recruiting. Seems as though he only recruits hard every other year and that's leaving for some big holes in his lineup.

    2010
    Gorgui Dieng
    Russ Smith
    Elisha Justice
Justin Coleman (never made it to UofL)

    2011
    Chane Behanan
    Wayne Blackshear
    Angel Nunez
    Zach Price

    2012
    Terry Rozier

Outside of Behanan and Blackshear (who has yet to suit up), no real immediate impact players over the last 3 years. Now Dieng has panned out, but the Cards just don't have a ton of talent. And 2012 isn't getting any better. Louisville is not in on any of the uncommitted top shelf prospects.

Can't take every other year off in recruiting.

  • It's time to recognize that recruiting and lack thereof makes up about 85% of the product a coach leads out onto the court or the football field. There are a few exceptions, but not many. This doesn't mean that great recruiting guarentees success. However, it more obvious than ever that below average recruiting essentially gives you no chance.

  • Same thing that eventually caused Tubby to exit.

Yep. Another example of a coach not changing with the times. Tubby refused to play the AAU game and still tried to recruit players through their H.S. coaches and it just didn't work that way anymore.

Not only that, but I think he was spoiled by the Cliff Hawkins', Erik Daniels and Chuck Hayes' of the world. Thought he could get by without recruiting the top level guys and he couldn't.

Recruiting something that still gives Tubby trouble at Minnesota.

All the while a large chunk of the UK fanbase simply cried that school x was cheating, school y was cheating, ect.....every time a kid said no to UK. I also get a laugh out of the movement at the time by the OTS supporters that UK was at a massive recruiting disadavantage due to the geographic location keeping kids from being able to make unofficial visits to Lexington. LOL

What do you know, as soon as a new staff comes in, UK starts getting unofficial visitors left and right from underclassmen.

Folks, it's about one thing in college basketball and football- can the head coach and his staff sell themselves and the program? If they can't, the coaching staff doesn't last and the talent level remains below you're competitors and you ultimately get fired. It's as simple as that.
