Was Julius Mays most impressive?

  • By that I mean: we know what Noel, Poythress, Goodwin,Wiltjer and by now WCS can bring. But on top of that, was what we are starting to see from what Mays brings, the most impressive thing to take away from the game? I just mean from what we knew coming into the season, can the addition of Mays be (one of) the most important acquisition for this team? This coming from an out-of-stater who didnt catch the game, only highlights. 2-2 behind the arc, 4 steals, 2 assists and only one TO and some solid, solid 27 minutes, albeit against tonight's opponent. He could be huge for maintaining the flow of our offense this season.

--Also, loved the production from pick and rolls (from what I saw on highlights).

----Also need to mention, Harrow obviously held his own.

  • He is like Lamb was for us for 2 season. He provides us with stability and calm. He won't wow you with anything he does, but does everything solid that we can rely on. (Lamb did wow me multiple times, mays will wow us less)

However... no...Julius Mays was not most impressive.

We have absolutely 0 idea on what we are getting from our freshmen. For example, Noel hasn't blown us away in BBM or Blue vs White game (he has shown us hints of athleticism and that's about it). Finally he came on strong with good solid game. 17 points 8/9 FG, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks. He can do similar to what AD did beginning of seasons with nice put backs, rebounding, and blocking and I will be overjoyed.

I think w/o a doubt that Mays was a great addition and may very well be the starter at the SG before the season is over or even early on. Im not saying Harrow played poorly but he did leave something to be desired at the PG position although I have been spoiled by the previous 3 PGs we have had. I hope Harrow works out but it may be worth the trade off of Mays and Goodwin in the backcourt instead of Harrow+Goodwin. I think Mays showed the experience that Harrow lacked but its still early and I wont give up on Harrow just now but Mays can always take over at the SG and Goodwin at the point.PS: You could have watched it on ESPN3 because I live in Ohio and watched it there.

I agree. My biggest concern right this minute is Harrow. I'm not seeing what I would expect from a point guard who was in the system last year. I haven't given up on him either, but I think his improvement at running the point, will be a HUGE factor for the Cats this year. Sure he had some points, etc., but he didn't look great at running the team, to me.

You can take the man out of Kentucky, but can't take Kentucky out of the man. GO BIG BLUE!!!

  • I like Harrow, Seems like he can score at will. But you guys are right, he is not running the team setting up other players at their favorite spots, etc. On breakaways he was looking to score even when closely followed by one of our bigs ... he did not reward them for their hard work. On a few occasions, Paulson did a better job of this. But I am confident that he will learn. Remember Teague at the beginning of last year?

  • I wasn't overly impressed with Harrow. He didn't play all that bad, but, he doesn't appear to have the "bulldog" attitiude that we've seen before, or, that Cal expects. He may develop it, but, I don't think so. I don't think that's his personality.

    ukblueforever

  • Teague was a bulldog, but Harrow has a different personality so I don't think it's fair to expect him to be a bulldog type.

He seems much more like Knight, with more of a scorer's mentality than the "pure PG" we might wish for. He's not as good a shooter as Knight, not as strong and maybe not as good overall, but he seems to play more like him than like Wall or Teague.

He was in the system last year, but just as a practice player and with mostly a different set of guys. Playing in games and with guys new to the system may make it tougher for him to adjust than we would assume his experience might mean.

  • the kid is very good idk why yall r seeing e played well and considering how early it is im extremely encouraged. every year its the same thing with whoever is playing pg r fans make me lmao.

    quagmire

  • I for 1 never thought Wall or Knight or even Teague was as unlike a Calipari PG as Harrow looked last night. Now I know its early and he may come around and I hope he does but the most important thing a PG can do is make his teammates better while being a hawk on defense and I really didnt see him do that very much last night. I hope Archie can pick up the PG spot like Lamb did so Cal will have a plan B ready just in case besides I would like to see more of Archie and Mays play together to see how that would workout.

  • Of course, I watched the game, and my eyes were pleased by the two big men, Goodwin, and Harrow.

Noel took 9 shots, and got to the line for two attempts. He committed 2 turnovers, grabbed 4 offensive rebounds, and blocked 4 shots. He used 8 of Kentucky's offensive possessions, and scored 17 points. His 4 blocks lifted the defensive perfromance of the team. For me, he was the most impressive player on the floor.

Cauley-Stein was not far behind with 4 shots, 4 free throws. He had 2 turnovers, grabbed 3 offensive rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. That is 5 possessions on the offensive end for 6 points, and his blocks and steals lifted the team's defensive effort.

I will take those numbers for that tandem of players all season long.

Mays took 6 shots, did not get to the line. He had 0 offensive rebounds, 1 turnover, 2 assists, 1 Block, and 4 steals. Mays used 7 offensive possessions for 6 points, and his steals and assists added to the team on both ends of the floor. While this is a strong performance, it is not as effective as Noel or Cauley-Stein.

Goodwin took 12 shots and got to the line for 8 free throws. He also grabbed an offensive rebound while committing 5 turnovers. He added 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 0 steals. On the night, he used 17 possessions to score 22 points. His assists and blocks added to the team's efforts at each end of the floor. In my view, Goodwin falls between the twin towers and Mays.

Poythress took 7 shots and 5 free throws. He grabbed 2 offensive rebounds and committed 4 turnovers. That is 11 offensive possessions used to produce his 11 points. He added 2 assists, 0 blocks, 0 steals.

My ranking of the individual players for this one game is:

    Noel
    Cauley-Stein
    Harrow
    Wiltjer
    Goodwin
    Poythress
    Mays

Professor, although Harrow had some statics that were ok he simply didnt perform as a Cal PG as of yet but like I said its early and Im pulling for him but IM just not convinced yet that he will become the vocal leader needed by this team on a full time basis.

  • I myself have been most impressed with WCS. He has far exceeded my expectations especially this early in the season. I really like his agility and his hands for his size. In your opinions is he a player we can expect to be around for a couple or three years, cause if so he is going to be really good. Hard to believe he wasnt a more sought after player than he was. Glad he wasn't,LOL! Go Big Blue!!

    mr289

  • He had some big time offers meaning wcs. Being a top player and having a schollie offer from the two teams that played for the nc last year dosnt count as highly sought after lmao.

    quagmire

  • My intent was that his ranking just didn't seem to be as high as it should given the natural talent he seems to posses. Also yes being sought by the 2 NC contenders is big. However, one of those 2 was right in his back door, of course that one is a no brainer. I dont get to follow each recruit as closely as some people but I just didn't see the hype about him that he could have gotten.
