  • Excellent news! That's huge getting a quality big guy who should be ready to play from day 1.

    JDHoss

  • Great to have Washington back. He was a big-time prospect out of HS and has now shown he can be a big-time college DL.

  • Awesome news. Another big thick kid up front. Eventually we'll see some results in the win column from really going all out with as many good DT's as we can find. Just need our O to improve. Need some big time playmakers. We've got the RB's and QB's but I think we still need a little help at WR and OLine.

  • Plus, with talking to coach Wilson, it almost sounded like they're bound and determined to get him back to UK, which is what you want and part of the reason you placed him there in the first place.

because as I recall Chris didn't one of you say that you were getting the feeling that his HS coaches were holding out for a bigger offer for awhile??

  • Best recruit for UK in this class...surprised this recruitment didn't get more publicity. David's impact will be greater than any Trinity kids...probably better than Bivins, will be a better DL than Hyde and would have been our best recruit in the 2011 class had he qualified.

    A 2013 DL of:

    DE: Washington
    DT: Cobble
    DE: Rumph
    Rush/OLB: Dupree

Without even factoring in what might be of Huguenin, Douglas, Chapman, Coleman (who is think is the best young DL), Paschal, etc..that foursome is UK's best DL in modern era.

Better than (Jarmon, Peters, Pryor and D.Lewis). Better than (Sweat Pea Burns, Caudill, Robertson and whomever DE was). Better than (Oliver Barnett, Jerry Reese and Donnie Gardner).

I'd put Washington to UK on par with the impact Towles to UK can have for both sides of the ball. Both are players we usually play against, but not have them playing for us.

K_Time - I hope you are right. Those are some pretty stout lines. Robertson was a Top 5 draft pick, Caudill was essentially a highschool All-American, and Sweat Pea played in the league). I am really excited about the future of the DL also. Hopefully we can add one more stud to the haul this year. We really need to add 2-3 big time WR's to this class. Timmons and someone else.

Washington is a 4-star type prospect. Interesting that he is down to 306. I think he played highschool around 280. If he holds at 305-310 and can play inside and out, we are in for a treat.

Was listening to Gary Pinkel talk yesterday and he was talking about how no matter what league you're competing in, in order to be successful at the highest level, it has to start upfront. And in the SEC, this is especially true.

    Yep, spot on.

Everyone calls about speed speed speed when talking SEC football, and while that is true, there are really two things that set SEC defenses apart from the rest of college football imo.

    Defensive line.....and defensive backs. Jmho.

The SEC is a DL league. It has always been the case that the teams with dominant DL are the teams that dominate the league and win BCS titles. When UK can start to field a DL that can consistently stop the run and pressure the QB, that is when the program will be on solid footing.

  • Dline is the one position where we've mostly struggled. We've always produced great LB's and position players all over the place on offense. The years when we've played halfway well we had a good line like in 2007 with Pryors, Peters, Jarmon and co. Thats whats so exciting for me. I feel like we've finally turned the corner at Dline and will have a nice Dline for the foreseeable future. Its a luxury.

  • Has anybody heard any reports on whether Chapman and/or Gaffree look like they may be ready to provide depth this year or will be redshirted? Cobble, Rumph, and Coleman are stout, but we need at least one more in the rotation. Man, just think about Hyde and Washington added to that group. Plus, it looks like we are in on a couple more big time DT prospects.

If he plays this fall - yes. Otherwise 3 to play 3.

    He's a D-tackle all the way.

Early reports are Grafree will play this fall.

  • This is awesome news. If we can make progress this year. Next year can be REALLY special! The defense will be seasoned. The offense should be more seasoned with the exception of the O-Line but I will let Summers handle that. It looks like a more and more complete team looking forward. If we can weather the storm, we can make some serious NOISE in the NEAR future.

Looking forward to having you in Lexington Big Fella!!

  • 1. I'd pick the Jarmon, Peters, Pryor and DLewis as best DL in modern UK era (I never saw the Art Still team play).

But to be fair, that 2007 UK team was not all that stout defensively. UK won most of its games by scoring all over the place The Defense gave up 37 LSU, 38 USCjr, 45 UF, 52 UT (I think it was 34 before OT). So that DL had some NFL players on it, but seemingly never dominated games.

    2. The Roberton, Caudill, Sweat Pea and Ellery Moore DL was very impressive. My only problem with them was no good pass rushers. Caudill was a strong kid, but was never an impressive SEC player. Robertson was about unblockable up the middle though.

    3. I rave about the future DL as I see Dupree as the best pass rusher at UK since Dennis Johnson. That kid is special and should be a force the next 3 years. Cobble/Rumph are already hard to run against. The next 2 years should be prove to be even more forceful. Washington is the wildcard...but if he is in shape...he is a perfect 3-4 DE. That group of 4 DL looks to be legit mid-top tier SEC DL in my book.

Correct. In the article, it says they expect big things from him this year though.
