Washington '100 percent' a Wildcat

  • A couple of things are true, if the dline is great, it can make even a mediocre defensive backfield look better. But if the oline gives a QB alot of time, it can make a good defensive backfield look bad.

    ..

Early reports are Grafree will play this fall.

Where is this being reported reported? I'm not so sure that Grafree will play ahead of Chapman. Grafree supposedly has a looooong way to go with technique. I don't expect much from him for at least a couple of years.

  • Love the depth of our future dl.
    DE: Washington
    NT: Cobble
    DE: Rumph
(With back ups as Douglas, Davis, Coleman, Grafree, Newton, Chapman, Hyde and Bell; and anyone else we sign for dl.)

  • Glad to resign DW...quick, strong, good overall athletic skills, like that hes dropped some pounds...will factor in at jumbo DE in 3-4. THis kids wants to play at UK...that means a lot. WE are consistently getting better and deeper up front on both sides of the ball. This alone gives me hope for the future of Uk football under Joker. Its nice to have some skill players go to NFL, but when you have 2 OL and 2 DL guys get drafted each year...you will see your wins go up. This game is won and lost in the trenches..I see us getting more and more SEc quality OL and DT...Lots of guys 6'3 to 6'6 240 to 270 running sub 4.7 40's that can play De in 4-3 and WSDE or OLB in 3-4...these types will make the db's work so much easier. JMO though. GO CATS!!

    Yep, spot on.

Everyone calls about speed speed speed when talking SEC football, and while that is true, there are really two things that set SEC defenses apart from the rest of college football imo.

    Defensive line.....and defensive backs. Jmho.

The speed they are talking about is actually the speed/strength/agility of the Lines. If you look across the board most of the other leagues have kids equally as fast in the skill positions, it's the DL and OL speed that is the difference.

Washington making it to KY especially if he can enroll in January, will be HUGE!

Correct. In the article, it says they expect big things from him this year though.

Was not trying to jinx anything but just pointing out that the season hasn't been played and sometimes things happen.

    1. I'd pick the Jarmon, Peters, Pryor and DLewis as best DL in modern UK era (I never saw the Art Still team play).

But to be fair, that 2007 UK team was not all that stout defensively. UK won most of its games by scoring all over the place The Defense gave up 37 LSU, 38 USCjr, 45 UF, 52 UT (I think it was 34 before OT). So that DL had some NFL players on it, but seemingly never dominated games.

    2. The Roberton, Caudill, Sweat Pea and Ellery Moore DL was very impressive. My only problem with them was no good pass rushers. Caudill was a strong kid, but was never an impressive SEC player. Robertson was about unblockable up the middle though.

    3. I rave about the future DL as I see Dupree as the best pass rusher at UK since Dennis Johnson. That kid is special and should be a force the next 3 years. Cobble/Rumph are already hard to run against. The next 2 years should be prove to be even more forceful. Washington is the wildcard...but if he is in shape...he is a perfect 3-4 DE. That group of 4 DL looks to be legit mid-top tier SEC DL in my book.

I believe you meant Ventrell Jenkins and not Lewis - I agree they were very good.

    We don't play a 3-4.

We want long and athletic guys for our SSDE spot. Washington will play D-tackle.

    DEFENSIVE END
    96 Collins Ukwu 6-5, 275, RSSr.
    91 Farrington Huguenin 6-4, 265, RSFr.
    50 Mike Douglas 6-4, 269, RSSo.
    95 Langston Newton 6-4, 258, Fr.
    Alvonte Bell 6-6, 220
