I wish I had your optimism, I truly do!
However, at a certain point, I think that failing to see the reality of this situation may prove to hurt us.
I fear we are as bad as we seem to be.
My evidence?
WKU game was terrible. CMU game was bad, particularly first half. UofL game was shameful.
IMO, the defense is pretty solid. We lack the d line play to be great, and our secondary has awful ball skills. But aside from that, I'd say our defense is good enough to keep us in almost any game we play. That's more than I can say about defenses of the past.
The problem is the defense is getting hosed by out offense. The two go hand in hand. The defense needs to play well and give the offense the ball in good positions. The offense needs to win T.O.P. And let the defense rest.
Tonight, I'm not sure what final T.O.P was, but surely we didn't win. And a good chunk of ours came on our first drive. You have to run the ball and you have to be able to force your opponent to work with a long field. We did neither and it was quite frankly embarrassing. Average starting field position and T.O.P IMO will tell the story of the game.
This sucked. Plain a dn simple. Maybe I'm a moron, actually I am a moron, but I'm not down on our players. Morgan played well. Made good throws and decisions for the most part. Coshik looked good and Clemons ran hard. Fields stepped up as well as the tight ends. Larod is becoming consistent out wide. But to have a successful offense we have to put ourselves in position to win. And to me, the problem is play calling.
Too many times we line up and run the obvious; first down is a qb keeper on a bootleg (never works) or a iso run that results in a yard or two. And now we are behind the sticks and have made the defensive play call easy. It's a given now that we are going to throw the ball, so here comes the passrush. We take a sack or throw it away and are in the same position. Blah blah blah. You all know and saw what I'm speaking of.
My point is I feel like we have talented players but we have moronic and inept coaches. I'm a huge joker fan, but he is losing me and others because he settles for where we are and what we have. He won't rock the boat and make the tough decisions. I'm not calling for his job, but positives need to happen going forward because we are regressing and it's not going to get easier.
Sorry for the long rant. And I apologize for typos and such as I'm on my phone. I truly hope this gets righted as I can't stand the feeling I have of being a fan that roots for the laughing stock of the sec. But it seems we are headed there.
We are not as bad as Curry and Uzelac. Everyone is complaining about the O, but the truth of the matter is our OL play has sucked. If you can not block, you can not run. My hope is that when Matt comes back at center our line will gel. The center is the heart of the OL, remember how poorly we did when Jason Watts was suspended for Outback Bowl.
Some things I can accep are conervative play calling. Morgans light has not come on yet and he struggles at time because of it. Some things I can not accept is our Os inability to adapt to the game. Why have Morgan run those Bootlegs when he lacks the speed and elusiveness to run around end. Morgan can run when the play breaks down and instincts takes over, but he can no,t I repeat can not, run that sweep play. Also, just because a play works a couple of time, do not expect a good DC to allow it to continue to work, hello screen play I am taliking about you.
During the game last night, I was ready to fire Joker and hire John Chavis with Neal Brown as OC, because be real, no big name is going to come in to a mediocre team in a power conference. Take the emotion out and I realize that our O is good with a pure pocket passer in it and although we might be in for a long season, things can change. Matt comes back and the line gels, Josh and EJ continue to stepup and Morgan's light come on and the game slows down for him. If that happend we still have an outside shot at a bowl game. If none of that happens, say hello to a 3-4 win season.
