We need more WR's

  • With the coming announcement that we are returning to a modified version of Mumme's spread offense we are going to need to sign a juco WR and two or 3 freshmen wr's. Considering we lose boyd, Fields, Mckaskil, and King we have to bring in some guys for depth. I think we have 4 guys who can play but we've got to have more depth considering the pace that we will play.

    Any names?

    hoptownukfan

  • First the current 4? Robinson, Collins, Sweat & Legree....correct?

2013 Freshmen: Yancey and potentially Timmons; 3rd?

    Juco: ??

    ShockeyFork

  • Whats ur thoughts on Bookie, will he ever see the field as a wideout? Oh and Cunningham hes tall and fast?

    catfaninMs

  • Whitlow could be a contributor at wideout and if they upgrade the DB's in the signing class, I could see Harmon switching to the offensive side of the ball. I would think they'd want at least 10 WR's (five outside guys and five slot receivers) ready to contribute.

    Right now:

    01. Demarcus Sweat
    02. Darryl Collins
    03. Demarco Robinson
    04. AJ Lagree
    05. Rashad Cunningham
    06. Jalen Whitlow ???
    07. Bookie Cobbins ???
    08. JD Harmon ???
    09. ???
    10. ???

  • Saw reports last week that we may be in the mix for this kid with the stoops hire.

Whitlow will be playing qb out of necessity unless we sign a juco qb for depth.

  • Stevens, Yancey & Timmons would be a solid WR haul. Maybe Jevontey Smith or one other.

    bluedynasty

  • We do need more. Jevonte Smith looks like the only WR committed to the current class, correct? And I agree that Whitlow should move to WR.

    KSt

  • Maybe, but Whitlow is the one of the three that can contribute at somelace other that QB. He's too good to sit if he is the starter at QB. He could win the top QB job, but for this system to thrive they need a QB that can complete at least 65% of their passes. That would seem to play to Max Smith's strength. I'd like to see them work Whitlow into a Wildcat-type role. It would allow them to get his talents on the field and still keep his hand in at QB in case of emergency.

Harmon looked too good too fast at DB to switch over IMO...His hands along with his athleticism equate to a lot of interceptions.

Our coaches have been robbing the defense to cater to the offense for far too long, doubt very seriously you will see this staff do that.

I agree with that. I think Harmon has the it factor to be a lockdown corner. Even if we bring in higher rated guys, I'd like to see him stay as a corner.

Bigger question is, who on our current roster is fast enough, and skilled enough to play the roaming safety in Stoops D?

hopefully, Faulkner will be that guy

    Why so serious?

Look for Brisly Estime at the roaming saftey spot..4.3 speed, plays much tougher than huis 5'9 185 size...reminds me of a Bob Sanders..or Greg Reid..

  • I think we are in better shape than we think. This type of offense uses undersized WR's really effectively.

We were daggone near putting Scratch in to play DB this past year. If there's a need for bodies anywhere, it's in the defensive backfield.

  • After 6-7/5-7/2-10, we need more of a helleva lot of things.

  • We had 14 frosh play last yr. To me that equates to 14 yrs of experience gained. That should be of significance next yr.

  • Well I hope that we can finally have an impact player at TE. I think moving Josh Forrest to TE/WR, in a Aaron Hernandez type role, would do wonders for the offense both in matchup nightmares and blocking down the field for WR's. Collins, Robinson, Sweat, Legree all have a spot to play. Cobbins and Cunningham get a fresh start with a new staff so maybe they will show up. I think that Austin Sheehan will have a role to play in the new offense. Add a couple WR recruits (Yancey and ??) and we should be fine. What they need to develop in this system is timing with one of the QBs.

  • I wouldn't be surprised to see more two back sets with Sanders (or whoever is filling that role) splitting out or at least running routes out of the backfield until WR depth improves. But yes, we need more receivers!

We need first on defense whether that's at wlb or strong safety.

  • I think we have enough talent and bodies to switch Forrest over. I think Dupree sticks at SAM moving down to Rush End in nickel packages. Williamson in the middle and Henderson at Will. Simpson will either have to move to LB or stay at SS along with Lowery and D. Blaylock. If Dupree moves full time to DE then Forrest might have to stay on defense. We won't have an impact TE on the roster next year if we don't move someone over from the defense (not saying Forrest is that guy, but it can't be a spot that gives you 18 catches for 150 yards again). Maybe Dowdell will be good, but it doesn't look like he will play as a true freshman with his frame.

How about Austin Sheehan, did he reshirt? They have Bookie listed as a WR, plus some names I did not know, AJ Johnson from Oregon, Derrick Quarles from Russellville KY, William Tanner from Nashville TN. Some of these guys maybe walk-ons, I am not sure.
