Great thread on HOB about defensive field general. But that's also a huge question for an offense that is so very young at the positions one would expect for leadership.
Warford and Smith have experience, but they're O Linemen so no dice. Senior WR La'Rod King should be, but (if you read Q&A with Joker in football yearbook) there are concerns on that front of just being the leader of the WRs much less the offense.
It has to fall to whoever wins the QB job, right? Oddly, the best leadership quality may rest with the rookie Patrick Towles. Yet another reason someone needs to win the job early and keep it throughout the season.
If the QB is not the leader on offense, that might be a sign of trouble. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but leadership is one of hte main attributes necessary in good QBs and the nature of the position - touching the ball every play, calling plays, calling audibles, delivering the ball to others, etc - require leadership skills.
It need to be King, Mr. Bird but obviously there are questions about whether he can be that leader. How bout 4 guys. Smith, King, Smith and Warford. Those guys need to lead everybody else in everything they do on and off the field.
IMO I think Max Smith will be just because of all the reports on how respected he is with the team. Seems like he gets along with everyone in reports and on twitter as well. I hope that can translate onto the field. If not him I would go with Matt Smith and Larry Warford to be the ones to get everyone in check

Based on folks I've talked with both NEwton and Smith are viewed as the leaders of the offense. Contrary to the Hartline years there is no split in the locker-room over who should be the qb. Morgan and Maxwell are VERY VERY VERy good friends and work VERY well together.
It's better to have a QB in that role, but that's not always the case. I look for Max to get stronger and more comfortable in that role as the season goes on... because he will be pushed by Patrick, who is a "natural" leader. King will add a lot of spark too.
Better be QB! So i'm going with Max or Towles.
I think this year it almost has to be the QB. They really need someone is going to get the team on the same page whether it's Smith, Towels, or Newton.
As said, I don't know if King has it in him but I do think it's possible for a guy to be at his position and be a leader. While Cobb was a hybrid of that, I think he was still able to lead from that spot if need be.
You just never know until those guys take the field and they're up against outside competition. Their first test will be a good one to see who can step up into that leader position because it's going to be needed against Louisville on the road.
