What coach could fill Cal's shoes when he does hang it up

  • after 13-14 or so? I was reading another thread and saw where Matt May has said he has heard people around the program say that if Cal wins another title in 13-14 season that he may be done here. Who would we look to then?

  • I don't think he will be done that soon be but if it did happen I would go after Brad Stevens first probably.

  • Brad Stevens. Shaka smart. Or Orlando Antigua

I love Antigua and think he's a great assistant for us ... but your first job as a head coach can't be at Kentucky. Need someone with head coaching experience.

Stevens is more likely in line for the IU job down the road than UK ... growing up in Indiana and being an IU fan.

  • Sean Miller. Not sure he'd leave Arizona, but he'd be my first or second call.

I can see Stevens at IU or Duke...not at UK. I would say the person we end up with isnt even a hot name right now because Cal has a way to go. On another note...we have several things to worry about before then and even at the age of 29 I dont think my heart could stand starting to worry about this now. haha

  • Two words...Billy Donovan.

  • Matt said that about coach cal leaving after next year? Cal has said since he got here that he would be here about 10 years.... Why on earth would he leave after next year, and especially if they won the title...

If that happened, which would be strange, I guess Smart, Miller, and Cronin.

  • Nobody!! At least nobody right now.

He is recruiting on a completely different level. He is fun and always in the media. He is totally awesome. Somebody might learn enough by watching him the next seven or eight years and be ready by then. Lets hope so.

Since other threads prove people are dense...this comment was a joke.

That might be a long time to wait for iu.

  • I say Travis Ford. He is a very good coach and plays the style of ball we all love.

Why would we want to take several steps down the food chain.......he wouldn't be on any list of Elite Coaches today......o yeah.....a Kentucky boy! nm...

  • First there is no one in the same league when it comes to getting elite players to come to UK, second why would anyone want to start a thread along these lines, it's his 4th year, try to enjoy this unprecedented success, rather than ponder what might happen in a few years. I know it's hard to just be happy and content, but find it in your heart to try.

  • Bill Self would be a good call, but it would be a lateral move for him, so I cannot imagine that happening.

I know Roy Williams left for UNC, and UK is OBVIOUSLY superior to UNC in every way (biggrin), but he had a connection to UNC unlike Self and UK.

    What about ....
    Beilein at Michigan
    Shaka Smart
    Chris Mack at Xavier

I do agree that I think Brad Stevens would probably be the best hire out there, though.

  • Without a doubt Brad Stevens has to be the first call. He might very well be the best X's and O's coach in the country.

He of course would be great but him leaving Fla for UK is all but impossible. I think Brad Stevens would be a great coach here but like someone else said he would probably hold out for the IU job and and not consider UK. Smart would be another good one for the job here and I especially like the way he handles his players.

    sleepydog

  • Love Brad Stephens but if he really did grow up an IU fan it's a no go. Can't risk the possibility that he could be hired away by a rival IMO.

Bill Self is my second favorite coach in the country after Cal. I think he's great. But as others have pointed out I don't think he'd leave Kansas for another college job.

Billy Donovan is intriguing. He's turned us down twice already. But I think Calipari has elevated the status of the Kentucky job quite a bit since he's been here. I wonder if that might make a difference this time around?

Wouldnt touch Josh Pastner. He's accomplished nothing in 4 years at Memphis and has had top 10 talent almost every year. Not only that but Arizona is his destination job.

Sean Miller might be the smart choice. Closest thing to Cal in terms of recruiting. Solid in game coach. Perennial overachiever. And it would be a step up from his current position.

I like Shaka Smart too but I wonder if he could handle the fishbowl environment.

Surprised no one has mentioned Thad Matta yet. Great recruiter, multiple Final Fours and his last 3 teams have all finished in the top 10. And he's still in his early 40's. Actually he's got a better resume than Miller. Might see Kentucky as the job that could get him over the hump and get him a ring.

Hopefully though we've got a long enough time before this is a serious conversation that a new name will emerge that stands out above the rest like Calipari.

  • I don't even want to think about it. It's not like Coach Cal is even that old. He has stated on many occasions that he's worked his entire career to get to a place like UK. He has only been here for nearly 4 years. I just can't see him being ready to hang it up in the near future. His daughter is grown, and his son is growing up quickly. Cal is a basketball junkie. The only way I can't see him coaching at UK is if ESPN pays him huge money to be an analyst.

  • Sean Miller.

  • And this is where all the crap gets started..Matt probably should have never mentioned that about Cal..I would be willing to be Cal is not going to leave after 2014..This is how all the rumors and nonsense snowball..The original OP here goes to another board and says he heard Cal is leaving in 2 yrs and then there is a 13 page thread on that and then someone else takes it to another board...What a joke...Enjoy the ride..This topic is not even worth discussing..Cant believe it was brought up.

Brad Stephens is definitely a good coach, however, he has never (to my knowledge) recruited 1 top 20 recruit. Do you think the BBN would tolerate that for very long? Remember our last coach?

I agree with Montana. Today, there are only 4 names on my list. Self, Miller, Matta, and Donovan. You might add Crean, if you struck out on those 4. Anyone else would be a huge, huge, step backwards.

Hope we dont have to face this issue for many years
