What coach could fill Cal's shoes when he does hang it up

  • Yeah Cal could very well retire here. I don't know what all this crap is about. He might get the NBA bug back at some point but right now he has his pick of the top high school talent every year. Until that dries up why would he even think about leaving.

Surprised no one has mentioned Thad Matta yet. Great recruiter, multiple Final Fours and his last 3 teams have all finished in the top 10. And he's still in his early 40's. Actually he's got a better resume than Miller. Might see Kentucky as the job that could get him over the hump and get him a ring.

I want no part of Matta at UK ... he has the personality of a clump of mud. The part of the UK job that Cal excels at ... PR and marketing ... Matta would be a dismal failure at.

And while I'll give you that he's a great recruiter ... I think his teams have really under-performed with the talent he's had there. He's not made it past the 2nd round of the tournament half of the years that he's been at OSU ... and missed the tourney altogether a couple of years. That level of performance won't cut it at UK.

I love Antigua and think he's a great assistant for us ... but your first job as a head coach can't be at Kentucky. Need someone with head coaching experience.

Joe B. Hall's first Division-1 head coaching job was replacing a living legend at Kentucky - Just saying.

Stoops Troops reporting for duty .... Which way to the front lines?

  • Sean Miller would be the best fit in my opinion.. As good as Stevens is, I do not believe his personality would be a fit here. I would LOVE Shaka Smart here. That style would be crazy, fun to watch and his personality is really cool.

True ... I just think that the job now has grown to the point where you need to be CEO as well as coach. Much more so than in the 70's. And the job today needs someone with the right experience to be able to handle it and not be swallowed up by it.

    Just my opinion ...

  • Sounds like a rival fan base starting rumors to try and get us UK fans to get riled up Cal will win multiple titles and he will retire in Lexington.

  • To be honest at that point, some of these candidates won't even be there anymore, whether it be the NBA, or just resigning, it's kind of hard to predict. I don't think Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart would work out at UK to be honest either. Who knows, by that time there could be a pretty intriguing coach that's a great recruiter and is on the rise. We'll see, but we're talking a decade a head, it's VERY hard to predict.

  • I think we need to take a DNA sample from Cal and clone him. Maybe we can speed up the aging process so when Cal retires his clone is ready to go. Then we can freeze his clones age.
