What do you look for Thursday?

  • What is it you want to see most about the first exhibition game?

    For me:
    1) Can Harrow overcome introvertness displayed on the second episode of All Access and really run the team?
    2) How the team plays defensively this early in the year. Do they play with ferocious intensity for 20-25 minutes? For me, that would be enough at this point in the season. It suggests that they get it, but are still a bunch of freshmen.
    3) How Calipari uses Wiltjer on offense. I wonder if he will use him like Jorts in some dribble handoff action.
    4) How long Calipari goes with his Twin Tower lineup this early.
    5) Can AP get involved early and often. Will he play like a beast or just show flashes.
    6) How often Goodwin gets to the foul line. If he charges once or twice does he have the floater to negate teams from trying to neutralize his dribble penetration.
    7) Can Jon Hood continue to build on his solid Blue/White game and prove he deserves playing time? Can he knock down shots in live game action like we need him to?
    8) How does Goodwin look playing the point against an unknown opponent in case Harrow is struggling? Will we need to use Polson at all?
    9) I just want to see Noel, WCS, and Poythress grab every freaking rebound that comes their way. I'm not worried about any of those three offense or defense. I want them to be the driving force for the best rebounding team in the country. Can they show that ability in the first game? We shall see.

Overall, I'm not expecting much in the first exhibition considering it's against a significantly inferior opponent. I really just want to see flashes of what I posted above, because if they can do that then Cal can point early and say "See, this is what I want."

I'm interested in hearing what everybody else would like to see. Go Cats! hoops

  • The # 1 thing to me is Harrow and how he runs the offensive end of the floor. I know he will be shakey in his first "game" action but its important that he sets the flow of the offense when in the half court. Poythress to me has to do 2 things 1. Rebound with anger 2. Drive the ball and know when to shoot it or pass it with authority. One thing I really want to see are the faces of the Northwood players when they take it to the rim and see WCS or Noel or both standing there waiting for them.

  • Everyone pumped for Northwood tonight?

    Kevin Ryan

  • I'm just looking to see what style they play. Are they gelling. Are they hustling. And are they playing defense. I'll be watching Poythress' effort too.

AP is one of two guys that I will be watching for their overall energy. The other is Harrow. I don't necessarily think we need him to play the same type of minutes Cal's previous PGs have thanks to Goodwin, but 25 minutes of solid play would be preferential to this team.

  • Just saw in the CJ that one of Northwood's guards is listed at 5'2". Is that real or a misprint?

  • For those who missed it, Northwood only trailed Michigan State by six at the half. Spartans pulled away 85-57.

Masse Doumbe had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Northwood.

  • Pretty good overall. Better than I expected honestly. Hood should just transfer. He has to be frustrated. I know I am. I'd love for him to stay but he's just too good to be riding the pine the entire game. It's ridiculous.

Just now watching. Looking pretty good for their first time out.

As for Hood, his dad told my uncle that he's set in staying at UK. That could change obviously, but he was very firm when denying his father's wishes to transfer.

  • I like Hood a lot especially the courage and fight he had in coming back from that injury but I think he could start for a mid major school and do well but with the talent Cal brings in every year not much hope of him getting much more than mop up duty minutes I wish it was different but it is what it is.

I think he's good enough to play significant minutes anywhere in the country, including Ky. I'm not saying starter but Hood should be seeing 6-8 real minutes a night. By real I mean the mop up duties in the last 2 minutes of blowouts don't count. I think he'd be starting on 80% of the major schools. If not more. Everytime we see him he impresses and then we never see him the rest of the year. He has much more to offer than a butt that warms seats. Oh and let's not forget that Hood isn't a 3 star UK homer pick we're just giving a complimentary spot to. He was a highly recruited 4* with upside. Cal needs to find him minutes.

Yeah they did look good. I think they looked better than the last 2 teams in their first exhibition games. They had too many stupid lazy passes but that's to be expected. Archie Goodwin... shot block machine!!!! lol We need to call him The Wall because nothing gets past him. The eraser. Poythress looked a lot more lively. Really not much to complain about. I saw Wiltejer miss a rebound and then he was quickly back on the bench. Everyone is on Harrow watch, including me, but I think he looks better than Knight or Teague did in their first games.

  • This KY team just might average 10-12 or even more blosked shots a game. With Noel,WCS,Poythress and Goodwin they could set a record for # of blocks for a team for the year in the NCAA. I cant wait till WCS+Noel get to the point where they are used to playing together and into the flow of the game and with Poythress and Goodwin joining in the other team will be afraid to take it to the hoop. WCS can sure run the court and Noel does pretty well but he will improve once he catches up with conditioning to the other players.
