  • Successfully pulling this crap off with out of state kids now. I want to hear his pitch.

Johnathan McCrary: 4-star QB spurns UGA and Alabama for Vanderbilt | AJC College Sports Recruiting

One of the state’s top quarterbacks turned down UGA and Alabama to commit to Vanderbilt on Thursday night. It was a surprising turn of events for

  • pretty easy imo. kids are finally figuring out a 250k vandy education is worth more than a 5k national championship ring. if it was my child I would tell them the same thing. Difference is now vandy finally has the right salesman. Time will tell if his coaching is as good as his recruiting.

In this case, maybe a realistic chance for immediate playing time..........

  • Vandy education + extremely aggressive recruiting style instead of telling them you want them and that they should look around. One isn't "more right" than the other, but the really aggressive guys tend to get a few more homeruns with out of state guys. Of course, some recruits and parents will be put off by that style as well.

  • I'm sure people and other coaching staffs where saying the same thing when we got commits from Newton and Mossakowski.

  • I don't know, but I hope he leaves for a bigger position soon.

I hate that they have hit this high on the recruiting trail. Some may disagree, to each his own, but I certainly feel that they have surpassed us on the recruiting trail.

How in the hell does that happen? It is Vandy for goodness sakes. UK needs some improvements in facilities, but compared to vandy? Come on!

Somebody needs to bottle what that guy has and feed it to our staff in an iv.

I may be wrong, but didn't those guys committ during the Woodson era where UK was ranked nationally, beat 1 LSU, and had gameday come to town?

Not to mention the music city bowl streak.

My point is, if I am correct in placing their commitments at that time, the situation is much different.

  • Rodgers is gone after this year, and this kid will be competing with other QB's who will have little to no experience. Never discount the appeal of immediate PT, instead of "waiting your turn" at other schools.

You have a valid point, but the fact that UK was able to land two top QB prospects in the same class was a big deal even then.

Vandy needs a QB in this class and will have immediate PT available. It's a great ""commit"" and will interesting to see if they hold on to him.

  • Franklin is a relentless, tireless recruiter and he expects the same from everyone on his staff. He rents helicopters practically every weekend in the Atlanta area in the fall so he can see multiple players/games. He has full support and financial backing of the Vandy administration. He sells that Vandy brand and education better than any coach that has ever coached there. He will do what it takes to land a recruit, including negative recruiting. He pushes for a commit and makes a recruit believe that Vandy is the best place for them (none of this "go check out school X and make sure UK is the best place for you...").

Agree. If Vandy starts having any kind of consistent success on the football field, the Dores will continue to get more kids like this. That's how they put together one of the best baseball programs in the nation.

  • Franklin is burning it up. It's when you start getting kids like these that it starts to snowball for you.

The Dores lost a couple prior to signing day but still ended up with a really good class.

The fact that neither one of them worked out here is exactly the reason why we were 5-7 this year. Just think of what could have been had these two lived up to their ranking and maybe took it a step further.

But hey we got Pat Towles in here and I'm sure he's going to live up to his ranking and be a UK great.

  • I live in Nashville, and Franklin calls in on talk radio all the time. He is recruiting fans as well as players. His speech is always the same. This is what he sells the kids, in this order, which is a smart move:

1a. The Vandy education and experience.
1b. Living in Nashville. Bobby Johnson did not do this. Most SEC schools are in college towns. Many kids want a bigger city experience, and they get it here.
    2. Opportunity to play immediately.
    3. Master plans at improved facilities. They are doing a ton of work this calendar year.

Vandy finally opened up the coffers when Franklin came on board, and it is working.
