What we're hearing: Offensive coordinator

  • Folks around UK were/are hoping that today would be a big day, namely the release of new offensive coordinator. Time will tell.

One of the obvious names is Neal Brown, who faces a tough call. Do you want to be an offensive coordinator in the SEC at your alma mater or a head coach at age 32 at a smaller school, and there are options? Plus, Tommy Tuberville's surprising exit from Texas Tech Saturday might muddy or delay any decision.

Fun debate: what would you do if you were in Brown's shoes?

Not saying anything will come down today, but I do know UK was hoping today would be day. Don't drift far from CatsPause.com.

  • But who is saying that hes been offered a HC job? From everything I've read SMiss, ArkySt or WKU are not strongly considering him right now. m I wrong in that? Or has he ben offered HC job?

    Thanks.

This. Brown wants to be a HC, but I've yet to see a single report of him being the front runner for any job. Hard to be a HC if no one offers you a job.

  • If I was an OC with a chance to be a HC, I'd look at my options and take the HC job at the best program. To me, it's a no-brainer if you're looking to move up. For selfish reasons,
some people on here would say go to the SEC school(UK) as an OC.

I agree 100% that I'd take a HC job over the OC job at UK. However, it just doesn't appear that he's the favorite for any job. Is he going to wait til every job is filled even though he's 3rd or 4th at a few jobs and not on the radar at all on the others?

  • I love you Darrell but this is a misleading thread. You didnt even say what you are hearing and there are at least 3 other threads where this exact thing is being discussed.

At 32 and with lesser amount of experience the choice isn't so easy. If you take a HC job before you are ready and fail then you may never get another opportunity

  • Brown was the first one to interview at LA Tech but that's all I've seen from them. I seen on a Southern Miss board that they wasn't considering Brown any longer. Could that be wrong? Possibly just what's going around. Arksansas State is up in the air, they want Petrino and he's suppose to interview with them today but word has it that WKU maybe going after him. I do know that Kentucky wants an answer soon. If he doesn't give an answer I suspect Kentucky to move on and Brown possibly be out of a HC job and an OC job at his alma mater. I have heard that Brown would be in Lexington sometime today.

  • I think this thread was entirely to stir everyone up before Brown is named OC. Darrell broached the topic without saying anything. Purely intentional in my opinion.

  • I hope your right about SoMiss, but using fan message boards in regards to who is being considered/interviewed isn't too reliable. I think we know that from recent experience. I don't think he would be the top choice for SoMiss or La Tech but that could change.

Is it normal to hire offensive position coaches before the OC is named?

    kwag

  • Pretty clear that Darrell is hearing today may be the day UK names Brown OC.

There are many, many reasons to take a coordinator position over a head coaching position. Not all head coaching positions are a 'move up' and there are many coordinator positions around the country that pay more, are more prestigious and offer better career paths than head coaching positions.

Candidates need to look at all the factors of all the positions they have available to them when looking to change jobs.

  • If Neal comes who else is he bringing with him? I've heard Chad Scott but I've also heard maybe 1 or 2 more assistants could be coming along with him.

  • Not trying to mislead anyone. Sometimes you have to be very very subtle on what you report to protect sources. Just saying what a lot of people hopes goes down today.

I've heard John Schlarman. He was an offensive lineman here during the last Curry years. I was an athletic trainer during fall 95 and John wasn't the biggest guy, but he just busted his butt. Unless I'm wrong, he's also a Ft Thomas Highlands guy. Never bad to stay connected to that school.

John also had to put up with Elliott Uzelac, so if nothing else he was mentally tough. I was working Uzelacs station at practice one day (I got stuck with Uzelac most days, the female trainers all wanted Jokers station) and Uzelac said one of the meanest things I had ever heard.
He told Deanthony Honaker that he should've just been an abortion and saved everyone the trouble.
I ran into Jonas Leining and Kris Comstock a few years later and we talked about Uzelac. Even years later, they both hated the man.

  • If the choice was Texas Tech HC or OC at KY then its Texas Tech all the way but he hasnt been offered that job yet but he has been offered another HC job with a time limit to decide if he wants it or not. He may be torn about what he wants to do but if he is offered the TT job KY will have to look elsewhere for a OC. We should sometime the 1st part of the week if he has turned downed the HC job he has been offered but about the OC here I would think we would know very soon.

Where are you getting this info from because I don't think there is any truth to it. Brown hasnt been offered a HC job, or if he has, the offer came in the last 12 hours. If he gets an offer he's not taking the UK job; this has already been communicated to Mark Stoops.
