What would you say?

  • If you were Coach Cal what would you say to this team? Who would you play? What kind of strategy would you employ?

My team: Mays, Polson, Hood, WIltjer, WCS
    Defense: 2-3 Zone
Offense: Pick and Pop with Hood and Wiltjer

    What say you?

    BigBlueMook

  • for sure got to be a 2-3 zone. Don't think it matters who you play now cause they all seem to have quit.

  • Yep I'd bury Ryan Harrow, AP, and AG deep on the bench and only play them in spurts. My main lineup would be the same as yours. I'd sub Poy for WCS and move Wiltjer to Center and I'd Sub AP for Polson. I'd go with man to man but I'd pack it in and dare people to shoot jumpers. Everybody but deadly shooters. On O I'd run the clock way down. I'd play similar to how BCG played shorthanded his first year here.

  • Below is a speech that I would use to rouse the troops.

I would play everyone else except Poythress or Goodwin. If you can't figure out to play hard or friggin' jump stop/stay in control of your own body by this point of the season then you are on the bench. Either move on to the NBA, figure it out next for next yr, or ride the bench next yr. Those are the only 3 options these 2 have.

At this point I am looking for effort, guts, and fight. Show me those things and you would play. I'd be looking to make a statement tot he team. Looking for discipline and control.

absolutely amazing speech! however, he was talking to real men. there are none of those remaining on this team.

  • Apologize to the fan base for this season, remind them about last season, and tell them to look forward to next season. Continuously starting over year after year, we were going to get this at least once. It takes a particular recipe: no returning leadership or experience, new talent that doesn't immediately pan out (AG, AP, and WCS will probably be good players in a couple of years they just aren't going to carry a great team right now), and a significant injury. UK found that mixture this season. On the coaching side, I think he needs to continue to do what he is doing. There is no magic to fix the problem. In fact, I don't think the problems are fixable this year. On a positive note, Cal now has a great seasons worth of teaching tools for future teams; "here is what happens when you don't accept my coaching and listen to me." He can put that up against his other three seasons when he says;" here' is what happens when you do accept my coaching and listen to me."

  • I appreciate and support every player that chooses to play for UK in any sport, but, I so hope that Goodwin and Poythress decide to leave for the pros and do great. Either they do not have the talent or they are just coasting and waiting for the NBA. Harrow plays with no heart and is extremely weak. They obviously are only interested in the name on the back of the jersey instead of the name on the front of the jersey. I feel sorry for Mays, Polson, Wiltjer, Cauley-Stein (and Noel if he were still able to play) who are actually playing with everything they have. They don't have the best of ability, but at least they give everything they have. I don't believe I have ever called out a player in a post, but this is ridiculous.

    Very good observation and analysis.

  • I think you'll definitely see Cal try to revamp this team. They simply can't play the way they were playing. I'm surprised Cal hasn't come up with a way like he did with the BK team to find some offensive flow. Maybe it simply because we don't have a PG. I think Cal will end up going with Mays at point. And use he and Wiltjer in the pick and roll and pick and pop like the OP mentioned. I think he'll also use Archie and WCS some in the pick and roll.

The bad thing about Mays in the pick and roll is he's not fast enough to turn the corner and he's not big enough to finish at the basket if he does turn the corner.

We've just got limited options. I really think the BCG style of shortening the game might be the best way for this team to sneak in some wins. Pack it in defensively, make the other team shoot it from deep and take the shot clock way down on the offensive end. Its a horrible style to watch but it can be effective. You can wear the other team down and make them defend you for the whole shot clock.

Poythress should not touch the ball unless its in the post period. And WCS should not touch the ball unless he's got deep position. Guys have got to be more deligent in where they get the ball to each other. Polson, Mays and Hood should know this. Personally I don't expect Harrow and Goodwin to know anything.

We absolutely have to beat Mizzou at home to have any chance to get in the tourney and I don't see that happening. They will kill us inside and that little PG will tear us apart with penetration. We're basically screwed.

You hit the nail on the head re: lack of PG being a primary reason this team finds the offense tough going and why it will continue to do so.

  • First, I would make them ALL wear shit-brown shirts during practice, because they play together like crap.

    Then, I would say...

"You no longer deserve to wear Wildcat Blue, until you earn it. You either come to play Kentucky Wildcat Ball... or you don't come at all"
