What's happens if Joker misses out on a bowl game?

  • Man we are young on offense. We are starting 7 Sophmores on offense. Unless we go 2 wide then just 6.

Have to replace a lot in the defensive backfield to. WOW.

    Can Joker survive?

  • I hope so, this season could easily be a 4-5 win year. Just with 26 juniors and seniors combined (that # will get a little lower after the summer imo) and several of those will likely not see much of the field, it will be tough. Hope I am wrong but that is my prediction.

Mitch has given the fball coaches the benefit of the doubt in the past, but two missed bowl games in a row, I imagine the pressure from the fans will be quite high. The young guys need to show improvement and Joker needs to have a solid class lined up to come in to help him out. Also, the fan base just needs to be realistic going into the season but 6 wins is a good goal to have. This is the youngest team I can ever remember UK having (I don't date back much) but I really like the future of the team and hope Joker is able to be around for the credit when it happens.

  • 5 wins will keep Joker at UK if the team plays hard and doesn't look lost or gets embarrassed. Anything under 5 and it will be close. Start the season 2-4 and MB will be working the phones.

  • A. The Louisville game is huge. If he wins that at we only get 5 total he might be able to survive if we are competitive in sec games.

    B. if we get to a bowl and we lose to uofl he keeps his job but some in our fanbase and potentially me might still have doubts.

    Valid points.

  • This is not the time to stir negative, pessimistic thoughts/opinions about this team, Joker or his future. We had enough "what if" and "farrr Joker" threads at last seasons end... no need to rehash those arguments. For this season, what's done is done and nows the time to get behind Joker and support our team... and THINK POSITIVE!!! thumbsup

I agree JawJacker! Support is what this team needs.

I agree 5 and a loss to UL might get him the walking papers. Unless one of the wins is UF.
Now if they best UL and get to 6-7 wins then I think the recruiting takes a big leap in 2013.

As is the case every season, but especially with the UL game being 1st up on the schedule, it will be hugely monumental to how the rest of the season goes both on the field AND in recruiting. Strong's positive momentum can be put on hold and a 3-0 start to the season looks VERY possible

  • If Joker can't get to a bowl this year then we miss out on very valuable practice time. It is extremely important when you have a young team, and had we gone to a bowl last year we would already have a leg up this spring. Going to a bowl, any bowl, is very important for this reason. Joker knows that and he is doing everything possible to try and get that done for the good of everyone. As far as his job status being tied to a UofL loss, a UF win, or a bowl is a bunch of bunk in my eyes. I seriously doubt Joker, his coaches, and the players are worried about who they beat unless it's the team in the next game. I don't think Joker will spend 5 minutes this year thinking about his job status, only the job he has to get done. Joker et al want a bowl game and more and will be focused on the task at hand. That's what HC and winners do in times when people begin to question them.

  • I really think you guys are setting yourselfs up to be greatly disappointed if you think there is any kind of magic formula win wise for Joker job to be in jeopardy (minus going winless or just one or two victories) I posted the below in another thread but I think it needs to be said again. I strongly believe you just have to look at coach Henderson and the baseball team to see the roadmap to Jokers job.

Let's look at it this way.....We can all agree that the SEC is second to none when it comes to football, baseball and women’s basketball. So below is a breakdown of those coaches Barnhart has hired under his watch (and this is probably the formula he is using to judge Joker)

    Baseball
    Coen's first two years
    24-30 (7-23 SEC) and 29-27 (7-22) overall 53-57 (SEC 14-45)
    Henderson's first two years
    28-26 (12-18) and 31-25 (13-17) overall 59-51 (SEC 25-35)
And for comparison Henderson’s third season was a disaster (25-30, 8-22 in SEC)

    Women’s Basketball
    Demoss's first two years
    18-16 (4-10 SEC) and 11-17 (3-11) overall 29-33 (SEC 7-21)
    Mitchell's first two years
    16-16 (5-9) and 17-16 (8-6) overall 33-32 (SEC 13-15)

    Football
I don't like to look at Brook's first two years because of probation so I look at Brook's first 4 years in blocks of two:
    Brooks' 03-04
    4-8 (SEC 1-7) and 2-9 (1-7) overall 6-17 (SEC 2-14)
    Brooks' 05-06
    3-8 (2-6) and 8-5 (4-4) overall 11-13 (SEC 6-10)
    Joker's first two years
    6-7 (2-6) and 5-7 (2-6) overall 13-14 (SEC 4-12)

What I am trying to show is I think Barnhart has earned the right to judge his coaches after 3 and sometimes 4 years. All the coaches (minus Henderson) had a breakthrough year in year three. And now Henderson is having his breakout year in year four. (I assuming that if Henderson forth year results were similar to the third year Barnhart would have made a move at the end of the season).

And let’s not forget in 2006 the feeling around the program was about the same now as it was then, Brooks was coming off a 3-8 campaign, we get blitzed by Louisville in the opener, we go down to Baton Rouge 3-3 and lay a stinker and end up getting beat by LSU 49-0. There were people, some in the media, saying and speculating who the head coach would be when the team returned home to take on Mississippi State that next weekend. That Barnhart had to fire him to show commitment to the football program because this was not working out. But instead, Barnhart took the now famous bunker mentality and stuck by his guy. From there UK was off to a 5-1 finish.

So unless the wheels come off the bus completely or if Joker ends up having BCG type of off the field issues I think is safe to say Barnhart is going to keep with these vague unfriendly statements to people who think Joker is a done after this year if we don’t win “x” number of games.
