What's your most memorable Midnight Madness?

  • Thinking back over the years I've covered the event. There's been some wild ones (and a couple of duds).

I think my all-time favorite is the year they had the Batman theme with Delk and McCarty as Batman and Robin. Of course, that turned out to be a pretty good year overall. smoke

Tubby Smith in the Back To The Future Delorean was good, too.

Cal's first Madness will always be memorable.

  • Dud: One year (can't really recall, but Tubby era, I think) they just had a band playing and did a bunch of contests with the fans. It was pretty sad.

  • Tubby stepping out of the DeLorean with the blue down vest was so awesome. Was also there for the Batman and Robin in 95.

Cal's first season was pretty unforgettable. Billy G's first was pretty much a dud.

  • My favorite was Pitino's first year.

I believe I waited outside Memorial for twelve or fourteen hours.
Their was a huge amount of theatrics and drill running that was entertaining.

The previous year, Sutton had made a big deal about how the team would need to work hard and make that extra pass. Play was very boring and we lost a zillion games anyway. Note that this is in reference to games and not the previous midnight madness.

When Madness finally got around to the scrimmage they ran up the court and passed it around several times before finally turning it over. There was another dull trip back and forth butr then Pitino stepped into the middle of it and screamed at them to stop. He began ripping into the players, demanding that they shoot the ball when open. Immediately afterward, the scrimmage went at 90 mph with threes galore and the crowd went crazy. Of course, we knew the extra passing had been staged but it didn't matter.

  • Cal's first Madness is my most memorable to this point. I've never seen one in person, so I'm left with the TV, but you could feel the energy when the Cats were introduced and John Wall came out on the skylift (idk what else to call it).. And you just KNEW UK was back in a big way. Last years was awesome, also, simply because of Kanter and his entrance. Looking forward to Friday!!!

  • The very first one. It felt like we were watching a practice. 12,000 people, completely silent, watching the drills that they do in practice. Remember Robey looking polished compared to the younger players. Remember watching the assistant coaches pounding the big men with "punching dummies" as they were trying to score inside.

  • I was at Cal's first madness. It was beyond description. I also met Drake afterwards (completely got away with getting backstage ) and later on I beat up a guy at a bar downtown. LOL. He was a drunk Dbag from Maryland who kept screaming F Cal.
I guess the bouncers were UK fans because they let me finish my Crown before walking out on my own two. LOL

    All in all...outstanding night.

  • Yeah, I've only been to a few, but the 2009 one, as Cal's first season was simply amazing. . .

  • Beginning of 92-93, midnight madness actually fell on Halloween. That was pretty cool.

My memory is fuzzy on that one. Did UK have a Halloween theme?
