When did ESPN

  • Stop using the espn poll as their ranking system for games lol? Is it strange that espn uses the ap poll instead of the espn poll for their game or scroll rankings? Sorry, just noticed we were not ranked last week, even though we were ranked in that poll. Maybe it's been that way for a while!

Maybe I dont pay close attention but I wasnt aware that ESPN had a poll ranking the teams except for the power rankings(RPI) They have used(I think) the AP Poll for a while now there is also the USA Todays Coaches Poll they publish on their website along with the AP Poll so if they have a poll of their own I havent seen it and if thats the case tell me where to look and I will take a peek at it.

  • ESPN has never used their own "Power Rankings" poll for any game they broadcast. I am pretty sure they use they use the Coaches poll. But I wouldn't be surprised if the rankings they use during broadcasts is the higher of the AP and Coaches in order to garner interest in the game.

I watch a lot of college basketball on ESPN and I have heard the play by play people along with the studio people mention KYs lack of being in the top 25, so Im not sure that they use the coaches poll. Also at the bottom of the screen I havent seen UKs name on it as being ranked which would indicate that they use the AP poll exclusively IMO.

  • Espn has always used the Espn/USA today coaches poll. Now they are all of a sudden using the ap poll. Go to espn website and polls to see. I have noticed bc we are ranked 22, but it keeps showing notre dame 22, and us unranked on the espn crawl each day on tv.

shepp, I have seen the polls listed by ESPN.com and they list 4 ranking polls 1. AP Top 25 2. USA Todays Coaches Poll 3. ESPN Power Rankings 4 ESPN RPI INSIDER Poll. UK isnt ranked in the AP Poll and is ranked #23 in the USA Todays Coached Poll and # 24 in the ESPN Power Rankings and Im not sure about the ESPN iNSIDER rpi b/c Im not an insider. So the point is that ESPN uses the AP poll when considering the rankings of the the top 25 and again KY isnt in that poll yet but is #23 in the USA Todays coaches poll. You may have seen UKs ranking being scrolled at the bottom of the various ESPN networks and where they stand in the coaches poll but ESPN uses the AP Poll when they talk about the teams rankings and how they are shown on the air. Today for instance they didnt show UK being ranked at all in the game with Marshall there wasnt any # next to KYs name when shown at anytime on the air.

  • It's not a big deal, but they have always used the coaches poll. It's actually called the espn/USA today coaches poll. That was why I put the picture up. And that's what they've always called it. I've just Never seen them use the AP since I've followed bball. I don't know, it's not really important anyhow lol.

Your right of course no big deal either way. Lets just hope they return to all the polls before long.

  • Yeah. A lot of ranked teams lost today, but probably too highly ranked to do anything for UK

It became USA Today only in 2004 actually...see below and link.

The Coaches' Poll began selecting the top 20 teams on a weekly basis during the 1950-1951 college football and basketball seasons. It was initially published by United Press from 1950 thru 1990, followed by USA Today/CNN from 1991 thru 1996, and USA Today/ESPN from 1997 to 2004, and USA Today from 2005 to present. For the 1990-1991 football and basketball seasons, the poll expanded to a top 25, and it has retained this format since.

  • Good poll knowledge.... Giggity! But, you need to read the article more closely. You were looking at the football section. Here is the excerpt for basketball. I posted a photo for ease of searching the article.

  • So, espn retains its involvement with college basketball, just not football. I swear I have always been a huge follower of the basketball rankings, I always look forward to Mondays, just been that way for me since I was younger. I just found it weird that they switched, and it kind of pissed me off that I felt like it happened the week we dropped out of the ap lol. Oh well, thanks for the replies, I still learned something!
