Who do you want?/ Who do you think we can get?

  • I know there is already a thread about this but I want to start one for the non-VIP members.

I want Petrino but I do not think we will get him as he will be a hot commodity, but you never know. Below are the coaches I think we should be able to get and ones I would be happy with, although I know my opinion does not really matter.

    1. Gus Malzahn
    2. Kirby Smart
    3. Sonny Dykes
    4. Mike Leach
    5. Kliff Kingsbury

    What say you?

  • Haha I was going to say; no need to get locked out because the other thread was VIP only. Oh well no harm done.

  • I realized that. I jumped the gun.

    Haste makes waste.

Too much to read this afternoon

  • Agreed I'd imagine its going to get worse considering this and the Bball team is starting the season this week.

    BigBlueMook

  • 1. BP (proven BCS college coach)
    2. Sean Peyton (SB Coach)
    3. Mike Belotti (Great Off. Mind)
    4. Josh McDaniels (Young OC with SB rings)
    5. Gus Malzahn (Great College OC)
    6. Bud Foster (Great College DC)
    7. Rex Ryan (Larger than life character that recruits would love)

    lleycat7304

  • I'd like to see Greg Roman get a call.

    WildcatZA

  • I want:
    1) Bobby P
    2) Kirby Smart
    3) theres alot but thats my top 2

Who do i think we get:
    1) Cutcliff
    2) Dykes
    3) Tee Martin

  • Gary Patterson would be a good choice as would Chris Petersen...Those are 2 I want...Why anyone wants Gus Malzahn is beyond me..Bring in Bud Foster as head coach
or Def Co. for the new coach..

    wildcatdon

  • I would write Smart of Foster a blank check right now...build this team on defense which we seem to have one hell of a lot of talent right now.

    rob65

  • Good point about building the team defense and that is going to take time and a lot of patience which a lot of our fans do not have. We need a hire that will bring excitement and I would agree that Bud Foster or Kirby Smart would be a great hire but I am not so sure if we can wait another 4-5 years of mediocrity in order to get the defense up to par; but if you get one of those guys and try to convince an up and comer o-cordinator to join then we could could have something.

How about a Kirby Smart and Sonny Dykes Combo? That could be interesting. Make Smart the HC and Dykes the o-cordinator and get maybe another young d-cordinator. It would take time but I would definitely pumped about that possibility.

Dykes isn't coming from a head-coaching job to take a OC spot when he believes he should be the HC @ UK.

    bluedynasty

  • Im sorry about the names but I read earlier tonight that the OC at Florida form BSU OC (Peace I think) and the OC for the Atlanta Falcons would like the UK job.
That would be interesting. Still think it will be Dykes, I'll support him but dont think Dykes is the answer.

  • Butch Jones is still #1 on my big board.

He's a proven winner at multiple stops....Plays an exciting brand of FB.... Aggressive DEF...Uptempo OFF....Big time motivator/communicator/teacher...Consummate salesman of the program. Never let's budgetary restraints stop his creativity...Wins the press conference w/ the fans, the current players & the boosters...And gets the most out of them & his staff...It's is a finely tuned recruiting machine, working the same recruiting grounds UK loves to mine...KY, GA, FL, OH, IN, ILL, Memphis TN & CA Jucos.

For Butch Jones & Co, maybe UK is a opening to the Big Boy table of college coaches, as the SEC is the measuring stick. Everyone knows the BE isn't going to be included at the BCS play-off table come 2014...And if he can turn UK into a 10game winner...He'll be compared to the elite in the coaching profession & be able to right his own legacy! (Sell the dream & Feed the ego!)

If not him...Go Young / Exciting (Doeren, Dykes, Hudspeth, McIntyre, Diaco, Diaz, Smart) ...Go NFL- Big Name (Ryan, Garrett, McDaniels, Del Rio, Payton??)...But please...No Fulmer, Cutcliffe, Houston Nutt, SEC Retread...Well, Maybe Tommy Tuberville. I could probably live w/ him...But that's the so expected - totally not sexy - Mitch Barnhart type hire we are all dreading.

There's something about your post(s), that moves Petrino toward the top of my list... the more you post, the more I want him as our HC.

Don't ask me... I have no idea why. coffee

  • UK needs a big name hire from either the NFL, or at or has been at a big-time program. I think enough example of that is the fact since Auburn's O-coordinator left for Arkansas St, every prospect that leaves Auburn would end up there. You have to think, if it's a current coach at let's say, Florida, and we get their O-Coordinator, or even Bama for that matter for some reason, some recruits might immediately be attracted to the school. UK does not need to hire people that used to be apart of our lackluster football tradition, we need a new, aspiring force, that can bring this program to a whole new level. BUT They MUST pay big $$ for this coach, and they must show willingness to upgrade the facilities and focus on the football program. With those steps, we can improve the program, but if we just stick with the hire like they usually do for football, we will head no where. I wouldn't jump the gun over Florida's O-Coordinator, as Florida's offense ranks 103rd in the country, but I say we go after like Florida's D-coordinator, or someone that is showing success at the moment, but my dream hire as someone previously mentioned, would be Jon Gruden. Considering everything he does, his history as a pro coach, Monday night football, and everything else, he could bring "Swagger" to UK. Again though, we must be realistic, and be willing to upgrade the football program.

Who will Mitch Hire: Marvin Lewis

  • This will be my only contribution to the talk about coaching unless and until UK hires a coach - good luck in your search.

My thoughts deal with Bobby Petrino, a man into whom I have some insight simply from familiarity.

Understanding his ego as many UofL fans do, I cannot see any way Bobby would take the reins of a program so guaranteed to flop for probably 2-3 consecutive years against his two most recent coaching stops. The humiliation would destroy him.

I also believe you underestimate his prior hatred for UK. It was pretty obvious, lol.

  • I do not think that Bobby Petrino would consider coming to UK because I think he believes he should be considered for the highest coaching opening in the country. Whether at UT, AU, or anywhere higher than UK. The man has a huge ego and seeing how he reacts to the things he has done; I don't see that changing anytime soon. But again, like I have said, you will never know for sure.

People on the other boards have been saying that Rex Ryan is on Mitch's list (I believe this came from KSR); no way would I ever think that Rex Ryan would come to UK and coach college football. I think he would fit the mold of getting people excited. But would you think that would be a downgrade for him. And why is it expected for him to be fired from the Jets. I know they are in shambles right now but; I have not seen anywhere that he is gone at the end of the season. Also, I know he has college experience because he coached where I played at Morehead State, but I am not sure that will translate into success at UK.

Do you think we should go after a pro coach? I think we need to put feelers out to gauge interest, but I believe our answer may lie in the college ranks. People have been advocating Butch Jones or Mike Stoops.

  • I'll break my own rule - UK needs to pay about $5-10 Million to a huge coach if they really want to change the culture.

Offer Saban $8 Mill. See if he bites. Otherwise, you're screwed. There is too much to overcome.

    Offer Jim Harbaugh $12 Million.

What is UK's yearly take from SEC Bowl money? What do you think the TV money from paying for an explosive hire would result in? Calipari has proven that no matter what the origins, ethically, the resulting recruiting gains from winning automatically.

No mid-level coach will raise this ship - ever. The fact is, this would be the cheapest and fastest route to success.

Do you honestly think that is Alabama called up Cal and offered him $7 million, he'd even take the call?

Too many overestimate the power of money. Situation is just as important to most and more important to somebody like Saban and Cal who have already enjoyed nice paydays in their careers.

Too many also overestimate the effect of winning games. The best thing it does is put fans in the seats, which is great--but it doesn't make a difference on our TV contract and makes very little difference in our bowl revenue. We get 1/16th of the bowl haul for each bowl game an SEC team goes to, whether we go or not. We get one extra slice of a game we go to--percentage-wise, it's negligible.

    djkycat54906

  • TV revenues for the SEC are heading towards stratospheric. Nor does the below reflect Bowl earnings, basketball revenue or apparel sales.

    http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/2012/05/21/pac-12-schools-will-make-money-than-sec-schools-thanks-to-tv-deals/

The estimate, premised on the SEC continuing without a conference-owned network and again having 15-year deals, would give the SEC more guaranteed TV revenue than any college athletics conference: nearly $25 million a school per year over the full contract term ($5.2 billion total).

However, the Pac-12′s full ownership of national and regional networks that have lined up substantial distribution before their scheduled launch in August, indicates that the conference is on track to generate at least $30 million a school per year over the 12-year term of agreements with ESPN and Fox that begin later this year ($4.3 billion total).

  • Winning games does indeed make money, for the record. Oklahoma City Thunder made $75 Million last season. Memphis, on the other hand did not do anywhere close to as well and the Clippers or Bobcats are dismal.

There is a synergy to it all. Look at the SF Giants, selling out 81 home dates and making for one of the toughest tickets in sports.
