Who is on your list to replace joker?

Not necessarily a big fan of this guy, but hearing Ron Zook's name being tossed around. Guy can definitely recruit but his coaching ability definitely questionable. If he can't win at FL with that talent how can he win at UK? But he did take Illinois to the Rose Bowl.

If Barbhart hires Zook to be our HC, he should be fired on the spot. Zook cannot be succesful anywhere aside from a descent year hear or there.

Now if you hire a head coach who hired Zook as an assistant or coordinator, I may feel differently, as he is obviously a stellar recruiter. HC, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm curious. Has anyone mentioned Mark Stoops? Florida State DC and great bloodline. Another wish list choice but not any more far fetched than some of the names on here. I would still rather have HC experience and not get a guy to get his first gig in the SEC to learn on the job. We've been down that road.

  • Everett Winters and Luke Fickell - assistants at Ohio State under Urban Meyer
Doc Holliday - HC at Marshall
Ted Roof - DC at Penn State, previously at Auburn

  • Given Capiluto's recent comments nixing any hope of football facilities upgrades, virtually every coach listed in this thread is a pipe dream.

The virtually inevitable coaching search is going to be a disaster of epic proportions and it has everything to do with the lack of administrative and legislative support of the football program.

Anyone who is excited about a coaching search needs to have their head examined.

There are OSU fans that think Fickell needs to go. Interesting how everyone has a different opinion.

Hope you guys don't mind me chirping in my .02 cents worth. I think Stoops would be a great hire BenSam, also Gus Malzahn at Arky State. He took a huge cut to leave Auburn and will end up at a D1 school in the next 2 years. Why not KU?

  • We should quit looking for the great savior coach and embrace mediocrity. Think how boring it would be to have a program you couldn't rip goal posts out of the ground over about every 10-15 years. If we had beaten Tennessee a few times in the previous 26 years last year wouldn't have been such a big deal. That'd just be crazy. It'd be like rooting for a basketball program that never cuts down conference championship nets. So be thankful we get that generational euphoria when planets line up and can cheer.
Then we dunk the coach right before the hail Mary

Listened to the whole thing several times. All he really said that CWS needs updates and the plan isn't ready yet. When it is they will go to the state.

Always enjoyed your post LAW but you're being a little over dramatic here.

After listening to Capiluto's comments, I agree that your pool of potential hires got smaller JDH.There is a butt load of money surrounding KU, is it all about bb forever?Who is in charge of fundraising? Normally your AD would take this on, is he on board for football?

  • I really like the fire that Butch Jones brings to the field. I think he would be an excellent coach at UK.

Good question, Knot. Football has been bringing in profits of $10-20MM per year for more than a decade while spending a grand total of about $14MM on football facilities in that same time span. We have "private gifts/donations/funds" large enough to fund millions in track, softball, and soccer renovations, if I'm remembering the articles about those improvements correctly. Our basketball players enjoy private lodgings and a private chef as well as "NBA-style" locker rooms.

Somehow, despite the ever-increasing popularity of college football and the enormous revenue potential it has from a wide variety of sources, UK has chosen to hitch its wagon to a sport that produces, when championship level, about half of what a terrible football program generates in a single year in this conference.

I'm curious, Knot, if you know off-hand. How much has USCe's revenue grown due to its renewed focus on fielding a competitive football team, including numerous completed and planned facilities upgrades?

  • Capiluto was very veiled in his comments. If you listen closely you notice he said two things. A. They have set aside 15 million over the next two years to escentially prove to Frankfort that they can pay for non athletics projects. Because those facilities won't create revenue that's why they have to take that extra step.
When he discussed athletics he said they would "self finance". What does that mean? It means that athletics can "finance" with their own new revenue created by the football upgrades. It's easier for athletics to prove that they can repay debt because the stadium upgrades create more revenue.
Lastly, listen even more closely and you find out that capiluto said they had no specific plans for any part of campus ready to take to Frankfort. Uk is working on requesting between $350 and 500 million in additional bonding capacity. The details have yet to be worked out.

Btw guys. I've talked to folks who have intimate knowledge of the planning process for these projects. Football will absolutely be included.

  • I think the next HC whenever that decision is made, should have experience as a HC at what is perceived as a "lesser conf".

    My pick would be:
Petersen ~ most likely would decline. My personal preference. Proven winner.

Petrino ~ would probably be best for UK. Familiar with recruiting area, has coached at a basketball school already, has ability for quick turn around with program.

Whittingham ~ He may be a bit of a long shot as well, born and raised in Utah very well established there and just moved to pac 12 last season.

This was reported in 2010 LDH and I think it is about a $45 million profit now at the end of 2011. In 2000 the profit was around $12 million after coming off a 0-21 streak. The upgraded facilities have really renewed interest at a time when the economy has been tough.Stadium upgrades with new strength and conditioning facilities, new Carolina Walk (formerly the farmer's market), new jumbotron,student-athlete academic center, are all in place with new indoor practice facilities in the works. I hate we lost a very good AD earlier this summer to Texas A&M, Eric Hyman, but he was responsible for the majority of the changes. He implemented seat licensing at the worst time in recent economic history, which riled up a lot of the good ol' boys at Carolina, but he was never one to mince words to start with. He was an excellent businessman who didn't mingle well, but he could raise money with the best of them. Carolina has a $30 million dollar debt cap for its athletic department, and they are very strict with that level. The rest is either coming thru general funds or private donations. There is a stadium expansion model that has had some talk, but I honestly think that it is 8-10 years away.As states we have similar population, public universities, and a bunch of other similarities, but I believe there is a lot more money in KY than SC. What will it take to tap into it?

  • this is probably another long shot seeing as how i dont know anything about his contract terms or anything like that, but i would love to see UK bring in mark stoops the defensive coordinator from FSU, his brother is a head coach, he is a defensive wizard and runs one of the toughest defenses in the country year after year, and if he was head coach that would give us a connection to florida for recruiting

  • Just curious, why has no one mentioned Willie Taggart.

Please no flaming in this thread. Give your candidates and the reasons.

These are in no particular order...

    1. John Grudent - Long shot, but Mitch has to call his agent to see if there is a "$" number. 2. Bill Cower - See John Gruden. 3. Jim Leavitt - contreversial, I know. But he has the pedigree. I also think the fact that he received a huge settlement from USF after his dismissal says that he likely didn't do everything he was accused of. He started teh program at USF. he had a lot of success at USF. He knows how to recruit florida. He's also had the chance to coach under JIm Harbaugh for the last two years in San Francisco. 4. Kyle Love, Rutgers - Rutgers, much like UofL will lose their bcs status after next season. They will have trouble finding a conference. Perhaps he's looking for a new home? 5. Kyle Whittingham - Utah - He's won at Utah. Can we give him a big enough raise? 6. Butch Jones - Cincy. 7. Bud Foster - Va Tech - Probably the top assistant on my list. Coaches at a school similar to UK in that there isn't a "ton" of instate talent and the actual region of VA they are located in produces no division 1 talent.

Thoughts? Again, my list isn't in a particular order just some names that popped into my head.

Long shot? How bout no shot.

To me Kyle Love has proven nothing.

I like Leavitt, Whittingham, Jones and Foster though.

Not a big fan of the OP's list. Gruden has never had to recruit. Not big on NFL guys with no experience in the college game.

I don't think Gruden would have a hard time recruiting. He has a great personality. If you've seen him on the QBs Camp special on ESPN, then you know he wouldn't have a problem. Maybe bring Trent Dilfer in as a QBs coach.

  • I like Whittingham, but I think he would be an absolute long shot. He's from the West Coast and now is in the Pac12. He has a good thing going at Utah and I don't see him leaving it......plus I think that Utah could give him just as money as we could.

    Leavitt is a good choice.

Butch Jones is a great choice. Proven winner as a HC in some decent conferences....MAC, BigEast.

Mark Hudspeth is similar to Jones, except he hasn't coached in quite as good of conferences.

Sonny Dykes is decent, but hasn't coached nearly as long as Hudspeth.
