Who will guard Siva?

  • Will we see shades of last year / Liggins and open the game with MKG guarding him?

    BigTyrone

  • I think you will see Teague on him. MKG will be on Kuric. There may be some switching off but Teague is quicker than MKG and we want MKG's length on Kuric to disrupt his shooting. If each man can keep his man in front of him and stop penetration we win this going away. Teague doesn't need to be right on Siva but just keep him from driving and getting to the basket to draw other defenders. If Teague gets in foul trouble then Lamb will probably switch over and guard Siva.

  • It's not the intial shot that concerns me as much as the potential for offensive rebounds and put backs. We have to be more tenacious on the boards than last game or we don't win... IMO

  • I guarantee you see MKG on him. He probably will guard Kuric too, but of you slow Siva their offense goes from bad to ruins terrible.

  • Biggest question entering the game IMO. I can see Teague on him. I can see MKG on him.

I would actually go with Teague on Siva and MKG on Kuric. Last year, I think Siva was the key to their team, this year, I think it's Kuric. He can really heat up if you leave him open.

  • I think Kuric is crucial, but Siva gets the ball rolling. He loves to penetrate and dish...MKG can keep him out of the lane. The longer you should Siva down, the more out of control he gets.

I think Teague guards him most of the game however, b/c we need our length elsewhere to really crash the boards.

  • JMO but I would rather have MKG on Kuric, MKG is prone to foul trouble and Kuric is more of a spot up and catch and shoot guy. Besides Teague has the speed to stay in front of Siva.

  • I'm a little torn on this. I think 2 of UofL's gameplans will be to 1) get us in foul trouble and 2)have Siva penetrate and dish out to Kuric. That means whoever guards Siva better be ready for him to drive into the lane, and have position before he gets there. MKG in foul trouble could mean bad news. I'm not sure how well Teauge will handle it if Siva gets the better of him early in the game. Teague is fast enough to handle Siva, but I'm not convinced of his "big game" play, particularly early in the game. If I had to pick, I'd say put MKG on Kuric and Teague on Siva.

Frankly, while I'm no expert. I'm just not that worried about what da 'Ville might do. My non-expert eyes have seen Pitino's team this year have trouble to routinely score points against less athletic or talented teams. I trust more knowledgable posters (like The Prof) that claim (usually backed up with some kind of stat or voodoo that I do not understand) that KY is one of the best defensive teams in the country. Loserville has struggled to score above 60 a game all year. I doubt that trend changes tomorrow. I know KY has not proven to be an offensive powerhouse consistently. But, we usually break 70.

    As to your worries....

    1) A visiting team is coming into Rupp (with our highly motivated crowd) and wants to put our more highly talented and athletic team in "foul trouble".
Unlikely........2 years ago Pitino knew he was outmatched and motivated his team to "get into the heads" of our emotional and immature players. Didn't work. With the possible exception of Kidd-Gilchrist (that guy is just a killer, without the killer instinct), I see that as a failed strategy.

If we're getting whistled for fouls.....So is da "Ville. Our last 5 is still more talented than their last 5.

2). Put Teague on Siva to start the game. If he picks up 2 fouls, put Beckham in to guard him and move Lamb to point on offense. Once Beckham gets 5 fouls...use the rest of the bench. In my opinion, loserville is much more likely to have match-up problems. Once Dieng picks up 2, 3 and 4 in the last parts of the halves this game will get out of hand.

  • I want to see what happens when Siva penetrates and meets The Sweeper (Mr. Anthony Davis).

  • I think Darius is gonna play bigger than he is getting credit for. This is is last go against UL. Plus he has the build and athleticism to body up kuric. I wouldn't be surprised to see him log some big minutes and allow MKG a break here and there to do whatever we need him to.

  • Beckham will get some minutes and be expected to guard Siva, because I can almost guarantee Teague will be the first one in foul trouble by attempting to slow Siva's penetration in the lane.

Do you need to slow him down with Davis in the Paint?
Maybe it will will be Jones or Davis trying to block his shots that may get in Foul trouble if Siva drives the lane.

But then again Davis could set a record in blocked shots.

I would be surprised if Beckham gets minutes in this game. IMO that only happens if there's serious foul trouble with Teague and Lamb.

Agree with others here that MKG draws the Kuric assignment, which is probably why Cal was preaching about how important it is for him to stay out of foul trouble.

  • Don't sleep on Russ Smith either. He can really get it going at times.

  • Not sure they will be called, but Russ Smith will charge at least 3 times. Dude is really fast, and gets hot, but he is very out of control. I doubt he can keep his composure against a real defense, which imo, Ul has not faced yet this season.

    Catmando

  • Siva and Kuric were non-factors. Russ Smith torched the 'Cats, but no other Card stepped up.

Smith played great (although I think like 8-9 of his points came in the last minute) and the Cards are much, much better than I gave them credit for.

They play hard, they scrap, they defend. Not the most talented bunch but not a bunch of chuds either. When you do those things, you have a chance to win.

  • Also re: Siva – In three career games against UK, Peyton Siva by the numbers:

    – 4 of 23 from the field

    – 0 of 8 from 3

    – 7 TOs

    Not great.

  • After being on the ul positive board, I was shocked to hear how down they were on Silva and that he had not played well, even though I watched the G-town game and he didn't have a bad game there. But Silva did sorta play like he was carrying a 500 lb gorilla on his shoulders. On the breakaway, all he had to do was wait for MKG to pass by him as he tried to block his shot but he then throws it right to a UK player, that does show stress I guess. But everyone had to be happy with the way MKG played defense on Kuric.
