Whoever UK hires- recruiting

  • Regardless of who UK hires, one thing is an absolute must. That coach must surround himself with PROVER recruiters that have terrific ties to two states.....Florida and Georgia. Those 2 states alone can and will determine the success of UK building a competitive roster. It's not Ohio. It's not Texas. It's not Louisana. etc....

Strong and UL showed us that SEC caliber Florida kids are more than willing to play in the state of KY. UK started making a consistent effort to the recruit the state over the last year, and the results have been very promising.

Georgia....we don't even need to touch on that. Everyone knows that Georgia is the backbone to UK recruiting success/failure.

If they bring in a staff that doesn't have serious ties to those 2 states, UK will be buying out another coach and staff in 3 or 4 more years. It's that simple.

  • Oh yeah, they may want to hire a "Special Teams" coach whom has actually coached Special Teams at some point in his career. That would seem like an important thing to do this time.

  • We've had less punts blocked recently then under the previous coach.
But we also so our return games fall off drastically.

The recruiting ascpect is huge, Every one says Butch Jones has strong ties to GA and Fl but I don't see better recruits committed to UC than what we currently have. Would he be able to recruit that much better?

  • I agree with the OP, which is why I am worried about the rumors that Mitch is focusing his search on the Pac 12, Big 12 and NFL. I know that is where his connections are, but that does no good if the coach he hires has little to no recruiting connections with high schools in the deep south.

It's damn hard to recruit to the big east right now. That's why a lot of folks think the "good" head coaches in the big east will leave after this season. The new system the bcs will adopt is going to favor the big xii, Pac 10, Big 10 and sec. The big east is being left out in the cold.

The head coach does Very very very little recruiting. It's about your staff when it comes to recruiting. Whoever he hires in terms of their geographic location right now has very little effect on recruiting (it might help to have a hc with some ties). What matters is who that coach surrounds himself with in terms of assistants.

Greg Roman could bring in some good "southern" assistants and have a heck of a brand to sell. So could anybody else...

I strongly disagree, unless you're talkibg about an elite Saban or Meyer type who's name and reputation precedes him. I agree that your staff is key in recruiting, but your HC's connections is VERY important.

Agree to disagree. But that simply isn't true. Head Coaches don't have the time and the ncaa actually restricts the amount of time a hc can spend on the road. Recruiting is 80% about assistants, 20% about the head coach's ability to lead the staff (keep them motivated and organized) in recruiting.

  • Who is going to pay for these Ace Recruiters? We couldn't even keep Tee Martin. When you good at bringing in the talent. The big boys will pay. Can UK?

Now, I agree with you that the HC doesn't have the same time allowance for recruiting and that he doesn't get off campus as much, but high school coaches look to and speak with the HC's all the time, because they know most of them from their days as an assistant who was on the road recruiting. In the end, even if they know an assistant, they are going to feel more comfortable sending their players (and recommending to their players and parents) there if they have a good relationship with the HC and not just his staff. Its no doubt a fluid process, but being successful in recruiting (in terms of the impact the coaches have, as opposed to things like program tradition, location, etc.) is not as simple as bringing in whoever you want as the HC and just put together a staff with good connections in key locations. The HC absolutely has to have good connections for recruiting purposes as well. Agree to disagree, I guess. That's fine.

Agree Minter..100% Up vote here! I think Kirby Smart would fit that bill to a T!! Ties to Ga and Fla..and Bama..a sleeper state. Smart is a defensive genius..and also knows offense..as he coached RB's at Ga, only 36..excellent recruiter..could become a legend here at UK IF he comes..
I would also try for C.Strong..offer him major dollars..hes proven he can reel in 4 star florida talent instantly..he did at UL..he could here as well.
Im opimistic..because our roster is loaded with young talent..we got 2 great QB's, and a dual threat guy in Whitlow...Sweat,Legree,Collins, Robinson all are capable WR's.. imagine Mobley, J.Taylor, J.Clemons under smart...pay one of these two WELL...and pay thier assiatants well..and we will become a SEC east contender very very soon!

Will UK? History overwhelmingly says No

^^^ You have to look at UC's campus & FB facilities to understand the issues they face (much much worse than UK), the budgetary restraints they face (much much smaller FB budget than UK) and the fact that they are vying for recruits vs SEC, ACC, Big10 schools, trying to lure them to UC (at least UK is in the SEC & has the luxuries that provides)!!!

    Here's UC's recruiting #'s the last few yrs (as per a rival site)... yrs 2007 - 2012.. Brian Kelly's last 3 yrs (2007-2009) vs Butch Jones' 3 yrs (2010-2012)

    Brian Kelly
    2007: (6) 3* of 23.
    2008: (6) 3* of 24.
    2009: (2) 4* / (8) 3* of 25.

    Totals: (2) 4*, (20) 3*, (48) 2* players in 3yrs...(And he got the ND job!)

    Butch Jones...named UC HC mid-DEC 2009 - 6+ weeks before signing day 2/3/2010.
    2010: (1) 4* & (10) 3* of 22
    2011: (1) 4* & (20) 3* of 24
    2012: (25) 3* of 25

    Totals: (2) 4*, (45) 3*, (13) 2* in 3yrs...Has upgraded recruiting each yr....While going 4-8 / 10-3 / currently 7-2 & bowl eligible.
    (For comparison...UK last 3yrs = (3) 4*, (60) 3*, (13) 2*...A respectable amount of talent due to being in the SEC...But Joker&Co couldn't win w/ it! 6-7 / 5-7 / 1-9 when fired. )

Clearly, Jones' staff has turned up the heat on the recruiting trail. They mine ALA, GA, FL, KY, TN, OH, PA, ILL, IN & WV/DC...Everywhere UK recruits & some they don't but those are places UK needs to go get players; if they ever want to take a step forward!!!
