Will Duke have to vacate championship

  • It is being reported on ESPN.com that Howard, who played on the team that beat Butler for the Championship, purchased jewelry in a North Carolina store during his senior year. He paid 30 grand down with a balance of 85. Alot of cash for the son of a single mother. However my guess is that the NCAA will find no violation.

    It's Lance Thomas and it's not like it's that hard for a kid with even marginal NBA aspirations to get a loan to pay cash down on something. If they prove he got it illegally something might happen but with him being part of a national title team I highly doubt it.

    He never had an NBA career but he's playing overseas so I doubt 100k was to big a deal to pay back for him.

  • I do not think the ncaa will let players get loans ???? exp not 30,000 loans lol. But this is Duke like UNC shoved under the rug

    Since, college senior wouldn't get 70,000 credit line (loan), this could get ugly for Duke. Oh wait I just typed Duke, nevermind.

    Like Ohio state, this should be a violation.
    Like Memphis, they need to vacate wins.

  • Lance got the loan from Corey Magette and Cam Newton's father.

    It seems, whenever a championship is involved, the NCAA will bury its head in the sand regardless of the scandal. The UNC thing is as curious as John Robert's ruling on health care.

    It is an NCAA violation for a student athlete to get any type of special treatment whatsoever because of their status as a college athlete OR because of perceived future NBA contracts.

    This was a financial special treatment that no other college senior would have gotten, and should make the player ineligible, therefore wins should be vacated, including the championship.

    BUT 2 words.....NCAA.....Duke.......nothing will happen.

    Future earnings loans aren't supposed to be allowed unless you're paying for insurance on those future earnings, but they still happen. 9 times out of 10 though any big athlete could go into a local bank and get a private loan with deferred payments just because the bank wants the athlete business in their bank. Happens at UK, happens at UL, and it happens at place like WKU. The NCAA doesn't have a whole lot to prove here its' pretty obvious he either had to have gotten a loan or he got paid by someone but either way Thomas is a professional athlete now and doesn't have to cooperate with the NCAA. At worst it'll probably be a Reggie Bush situation and one of their non title teams will vacate wins, but they won't touch the title team. Never have touched a title team including some very obvious ones.

    That's the thing though a bank has no reason to cooperate with the NCAA if they don't want to. So it is literally impossible to prove that he got the loan solely based on his athletic achievement unless someone at the bank wants to admit that. If they don't admit a private loan was given because of talent they can say we're deferring his payments until he finishes school and there's absolutely nothing the NCAA can do. Now of course that's assuming that a bank gave a loan but this is not an easy thing to prove guys. Reggie Bush is one of the most obvious cases ever and we all saw how long that investigation dragged out because loans and where money came from are not easy things to prove.

    The attorney for the jeweler states:

    "It was a clean, clear-cut transaction between Mr. Thomas and my client, and I don't see anything that warrants me asking anything beyond that," Bowers said. "Speaking hypothetically, if he came in on a bicycle with tattered jeans, I doubt seriously he would have been sold jewelry, but I'm not drawing conclusions. The terms here are clear."

    Bowers said he's seen no evidence that anyone other than Thomas was involved in the transaction and he doesn't know why the Duke player was extended credit for most of the purchase.

    He didn't get a loan from a bank. There is no bank involved in this. He got preferential treatment in the FORM of a loan from the jeweler. The jeweler is now suing him for not paying, and thats why this may all come out.

    Couldn't agree more. They had rather spend time and money investigating who paid for a highschool players trip to see a potential school.
