With Credit to DACats86--RFP for CWS Video Bds. and Ribbon Bds

  • DACats86 tracked down the Request for Proposal issued by UK re the new Video Boards and Ribbon Boards for Commonwealth Stadium. He posted it in the very long thread re that topic, but I think it probably deserves its own thread given the attention the topic has garnered.

From an initial glance, it looks like the size of the new boards will not disappoint. The LED Video Boards expected to be 79' wide x 37'6" high, with 582 feet of Ribbon Boards (2'4" high). I do not portend to know much of anything re the technical specs re these boards, but hope and expect that someone on here will.

Can't tell much re the sound system from the RFP, though it looks like the new system will again be installed in the west endzone where the current sound system is installed.

For those "techies" on the board, please let us know what you think about the specs on the proposed upgrades.

Edit: Link shows it as being "Unavailable" for some reason, but if you'll click on the link, it should work and take you to the RFP.

  • Wow, DA, you went to work today! That's an AWESOME find. Thanks!

  • According to that document, the contract for the work should already be awarded to someone.

  • Barnhart doesn't care about football. They're not doing the project. We aren't getting the new ribbon boards.

Oh wait, that was cool to say last week after the UKAA meeting and before everybody had all the facts. My bad.

  • Found this adddendum, too. Questions 23 and 25 are interesting (at least to me).

Look at the "electronic drawing". It looks like they may have drawn it in a way to show a "skybox" as well. Are they possibly designing the sound system to accomodate for this?

Also see 24. Explains why this isn't as easy as some have made it out to be. We're dealing with an older structure. Not necessarily just putting up boards. Might have to make some major changes to the structure including drainage to accomodate ribbon boards.

I thought that was a sample drawing submitted by one of the vendors on a separate project?

  • You know what's awesome about this? I realized that I got a question right on my final exam today that I wasn't sure on. RFP FTW.

  • Anybody know any other boards in the league to compare this to? Is it HD or True HD?

  • Lots of good info in the Addendum DA linked. I laughed at #2 -- when asked whether subwoofers are needed, UK said that fans like the "thump thump", which I suppose means bass (and I agree that is needed). # 3 was interesting in that it talks about designing certain controls to accommodate stadium expansion. Notice that some of the prospective contractors seem annoyed by the RFP. Several interesting nuggets buried in the answers/responses.

  • Miss. State's monster is 111X47, UT's is 124X37. As for sq. footage, that will probably put us in the top half of the SEC. Placing one of this size in each endzone will be quite impressive. Wikipedia has demensions for most college stadiums.

  • "install LED video capabilities for the two (2) existing video boards at Commonwealth Stadium (base bid to provide HD capable LED and an alternative to provide True-HD)"

Does this mean that each proposal should include two bids?

UK doesn't seem to have an exact idea of what they are looking for. I was hoping it was a little more precise. As someone said, someone should have been granted the contract by now.

Given the dimensions that Jeremy provided, the length will be less than that of UT and Mississippi State, but the height is slightly bigger than UT's. They should be good size boards.

I think they are trying to see how much bang they can get for their buck. Smart move IMO.

  • The info re the dimensions is on p. 23 of the RFP. It should be pointed out that those are minimum dimensions. I noticed that in the Addendum, a contractor asked UK re the length of ribbon board needed (they thought UK drastically undercalculated the length given they asked for ribbon board to essentially ring the stadium - including under the suites - which would obvously be well over 582 feet). It would be pretty sweet if they entirely ringed the stadium with ribbon boards.

I saw that too, I'm not sure how it's all going to turn out but this stuff has me pumped for the first home game just to get a look at the new stuff!

  • I agree. The minimum dimensions for the boards though? Don't they have a maximum since they are removing the paneling to put the new boards in the pre-established enclosure?

Yeah I'm hoping they can do a little better than the minimum. Anybody know what the current dimensions are?

  • I can see why some vendors would be annoyed - it's 108 pages of boilerplate, and about 9 pages of details. The vendor will have to submit a very carefully detailed bid laying out exactly what work they will do, and will not do, else they could be left holding the bag for some items they did not anticipate.

As fas as the dimensions for the ribbon board, it almost looks like someone from UK measured one side and one endzone, but forgot to double it.

    DACats86

  • On the free board, a poster has linked a list of vendors/contractors present at an RFP meeting at CWS, and Daktronics was well represented (with 4 individuals there). They have a very good website with examples of their work. They recently did the new video board at Auburn and have done several MLB stadiums, among others.

Perhaps we'll soon have a better idea of what's in store.....when this contract is awarded, I sure hope UK has releases drawings/details so as to generate a little positive publicity this summer.

    Jeremy Grey

  • Daktronics is definitely one of the more well known in the business. Good to see them represented.

  • Daktronics also did Bryant-Denny's new boards too, if I'm not mistaking.

On another note, I haven't seen Miss. State's board in person, but it looks goofy to me in that small of a stadium on TV. Kinda of like parking a 7 series Beemer in the driveway of a double wide.

    Katonic

  • Here is a screen at the Patriots Gillette field. UKs would be similar in size - this one is 41' x 83'. Look at the main video screen in the middle. There are two smaller ones (41' x 40' each) on either side, but you can get an idea from this...
