Wonder why UL can build new facilities every year?

  • Look how much they take from the school. Then look how much UK Athletics gives to the school.

Painting UK Athletics' financial picture for 2013 - Kentucky Wildcats

Last week, the 2012-13 budget for the University of Kentucky was approved by the Board of Trustees. The $2.6 billion budget is a reflection of difficult times in higher education, featuring necessary strategic cuts. The athletics department will navigate many of...

I believe UL's hands are not tied by the State Legislature like UK's is in regards to bonding.

It's confusing. UofL has the brown endowment that it can borrow against. It's a bizarre setup that is too complicated to describe.

The bigger issue is that UofL has a VERY small amount of bonding in place compared to UK. They haven't built new academic buildings or hospitals like UK has. So in turn, they have been able to go and get bonding capacity from the legislature in bigger chunks and haven't used it all at once.

So much of the bonding capacity hasn't been used the last few years and they haven't had to go through the legislature because they already had the capacity in place before the economy went to the crapper. UK however is tapped out because of the engineering building, the "main building" renovation, the new hospital and new dorms built a few years ago.

It could be argued that UK spends it's bonding on the mission of the university, education. UofL's on athletics. The two campuses when compared speak for themselves. UK has developed into a gorgeous campus while uofl's is deterorating.

Further, the EVERYDAY facilities including practice facilities are actually very comparable. But UofL's stadium is much nicer at this point. Frankly though their seats suck.

  • here is the pertenant paragraph about our challenges in bonding...

    Keeping UK Athletics' facilities competitive

The greatest challenge UK Athletics currently faces is the task of providing student-athletes and coaches with state-of-the-art facilities. The department is responsible for pursuing all facility upgrades and new construction on its own, without being granted bonding authority. Barnhart has equated this exercise to buying a house without being able to take on a mortgage.

In spite of incurring virtually no debt in doing so, UK Athletics will open new softball and outdoor track and field facilities in 2012-13. National champion men's basketball will have a new locker room in Rupp Arena and a new residence at the Wildcat Coal Lodge, while the headquarters of UK football - the Nutter Training Facility - underwent a massive facelift this summer and debuted new scoreboards and ribbon boards last fall.

With those financial circumstances, UK Athletics has taken on a flexible approach, and is continually exploring ways to upgrade its facilities, particularly its football and baseball stadiums.

UofL's campus is deterorating? I live in Louisville and wonder if you have actually visited Louisville's campus in the past 10 years? There is brand new student housing, restaurants, new student activity center like the Johnson center at UK now being built and new classroom buildings with a new Engineering campus which just broke ground as well. In addition to new athletic facilities for all sports, they are getting ready to build a new soccer stadium and expand their baseball stadium. When it comes to football, they announced and expansion to the Schnellenberger complex at Papa Johns and to replace the turf and all of the seats in the stadium over the next couple of years. Yeah it's really deterorating.

The central campus doesnt hold a candle to uk's. The older buildings are in bad shape. The aesthetics aren't even close.

I will give you that. UK's central campus is beautiful but UofL has come a long way and is no longer considered a comuter school. We can be proud of both of our State Universities.

Don't pay him any mind, he's always one of the first to bash eventhough you are right they do have better facilities than he's letting on, and that's hard for me to say because I really dislike UofL as well.

UofL's campus has had a major face-lift as of late, hop is right though (just as you agreed, like a grown up) the central campus at UK is very nice. All around UofL has taken some major strides in upgrading their athletic (FB) facilities but they also aren't handicapped in so many ways. I wish I could say UK has made the same commitment to FB that they have. It's really a shame that a SEC school can't have the same things a BIG EAST school has when it comes to FB...

UK has had the benefit of being in the SEC for decades and have always had nice facilties as a result of their conference affiliation an being the states Flagship university. UofL has had to build in most cases from private donations, in the hopes that a better conference situation will finally come. Time will tell if it will all pay off.

As far as being a fan of both as another poster said you can't be, I say nonsense. We are all Kentuckians and a strong UK and UofL does nothing but improve the perception of the state. As my name says FootballFan1st. I enjoy seeing SEC teams playing at Commonwealth and look forward to UofL getting the chance to play other BCS schools whenever possible as well. Should they get the opportunity to move to either the Big 12 or ACC down the road, I think everyone will enjoy seeing the competition level rise win or lose.

  • UK just built a new university hospital and has an almost new medical center which has required around a billion dollars in bonding. UL has a struggling university hospital and a very unstable foundation for their medical center most of which is owned by private corporations. The priorities are just different. UL has made some progress on the undergraduate side but it remains more like U Memphis with a professional sports program than most of the schools they compete with on the playing fields.

    zcats

  • Zcats and hoptown nailed it. UL has put a ton of money in their athletics and it's a big risk. Why the do you think it is so important for them to get in the Big 12 or ACC?

  • UL's academic campus isnt anything to write home about, they have made improvements but are still an urban college.

However, UK's aint anything to write home about these days either. Crumbling antiquated classroom buildings, 90% of the student dorms are embarrassingly old and decrepid. Their status are so bad the new Pres is having to work deals where private companies own and build new dorms to replace the horrible ones kids have to live in now. Since the state gov't is broke as broke can be.

In terms of athetic facilities, they have quite a few newer better ones than UK does at this point. Newer more modern football stadium that they are constantly dedicated to improving and pouring money into. Newer more modern fieldhouse and weightroom. Same quality basketball practice facility as us. They get this done not just with bonding, but with deep pocket boosters who before Jurich showed up were not giving to UL. Owsley Brown Frasier, Steve Tragger, Papa John Schaetner among others. Jurich built relationships with those guys, sold them on investing in huge big capitol projects, and rewarded them by slapping their names on the new places.

Maybe there are guys like that out there who can be tapped to help UK athletics (other than Joe Craft), maybe not. Can't help but think that selling some sucessful people on investing in UK athletics, particular UK football these days is a smart business plan - college football is so much more vastly followed and sucessful than college basketball, and SEC football is the king of kings. Oh well, all we can do is hope these days that help might come from some sector or another, because staying the same is leaving us behind our conference competition as well as the other D-1 program in our state.

Some of what jb said is but much what he said isn't.

    A. Yum corporation gave a big chunk for their b-ball practice facility.

    B. 90% + of their football improvements have come from bonds approved before the economic downturn. As I stated earlier, the reason why they are able to do this bonding is because they have neglected the rest of their campus and have dedicated much more $$$ to athletics than academics.

Uk's football practice facilities are as good as louisville's. New doesn't necessarily mean better. While uofl has been building new away from their famous uk made excellent renovations within walking distance of dorms. Louisville's stadium is better. But the reason why is because uofl is doing it on the backs of their students. They don't contribute back to the school.

    C. Saying that the classrooms at uk are falling apart is just plain false. The main classroom building or "white hall" has had big time upgrades. The b&e building has undergone a massive upgrade. The older psychology building and journalism buildings have also been updated. Uk also has a less than a decade old brand new engineering building along with an upgraded student center, Johnson center (student workout facility) etc...

In terms of dorms, uk is now on the cutting edge and will have replaced or renovated all dorm rooms in the near future.

I could go on and on. Some of what you said was true, but much was not.

Those relationships already existed. The problems with UK Athletics financing and donor base have been apparent for decades. Kudo's to Jurich for exploitation the burgeoning corporate culture and the ties to the University and city already in place. Meanwhile, previous AD's and boosters were too busy running around using UK Athletics as a piggy bank and country club for their cronies.

    Uhm, yes it is.

They have done an outstanding job revitalizing the campus. It is 10x better than it was a decade ago. But sprucing the place up and adding dorms does not mean its no longer a commuter school, because it is. And like UK probably never becoming a top 40 school (or whatever Lee Todd's goal was), UL will likely always be a commuter school.
