Would a win over Bama make LSU greatest champ ever?

  • Heard this on radio earlier today...

LSU has already beaten Bama, the Rose Bowl champion (Oregon), the Orange Bowl champion (WVU), the likely Cotton Bowl champion (Arkansas) and three other bowl game winners (Florida, Auburn, Mississippi State).

If the Tigers close with another win over Bama, would they be considered the greatest college football champion ever?

If not, who's ever had a resume like this?

  • Great question. Would have to dig through a lot of info to really answer that question, though it's hard to fathom a team playing a schedule to build such a resume (not to mention a dominating win over a solid UGA team which totally blew their bowl game).

Among watching big chunks of other LSU games, I watched all of the UK/LSU game, and then went down to Knoxville to see LSU play UT in person. This LSU team tends to come out and look rather mortal during the first half of games. But by the second half, they have absolutely pounded their opponents into submission like no team I've ever seen. The latter parts of their games (aside from the 'Bama tilt) were just absolute physical domination. Nothing fancy on offense, and no QB with pin-point accuracy. Their defense features a ridiculously good front seven, and two of the most opportunistic, play-making DB's you'll see in Mathieu and Clayborne.

And I may be in the minority here, but I've grown to really dig Les Miles. Can't wait to see this tilt Monday night.

And a side note, can you imagine how rowdy (and intense) things are going to be in the French Quarter this weekend with the throngs of rabid LSU and 'Bama fans converging?

Absolutely not! All those accomplishments mean zero unless they occur in a playoff setting. That is the only thing that matters.

That is just one reason why the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals are the greatest baseball team ever, despite their mediocre record over the entire season, they played the most games in a playoff setting. Screw the 27 Yankees and the 75 Reds, Go Cards!! Best ever!!

This is a scary, scary thought. New Orleans. Bourbon Street. Booze. LSU fans. Booze. Alabama fans. Booze. SEC football. Hurricanes. Machismo. "HUGE ASS" Beers. Trash talk.

Is there any doubt there will be some ugly, ugly incidents this weekend in the French Quarter?

Thank goodness it's not Auburn and Bama. scared

  • With a resume like that, it's hard to argue against them. I can't think of a team in recent history that's even that close. 2 wins over the likely 2nd best team in the country would seal it. I really can't even think of any contenders. Did the radio host mention any other teams who could stake a claim to this?

  • Should LSU win, they'd be among the most elite of national champs.

  • What's the best CFB champ you guys have seen in your lifetime?

That Nebraska mid-90s team that beat the living daylights out of Florida immediately comes to mind.

  • I loved the '85 Oklahoma team. Holloway might be the best option QB ever. And, enjoyed the '88 Notre Dame squad. Tim Brown was electric.

Sarcasm meters must be short circuited on the new HOB. lol

Yes, they would have to be considered strongly.

Texas 2005 and USC 2004 but honestly, the 09 Florida team and 10 Alabama teams were ridiculously good as well. Miami 2001 had about 60 NFL draft choices on it, and were ridiculous as well.

Pre BCS, the Nebraska 1995 crew was as good as I have ever seen.

Like UK's offense this season, I'm not sure your execution was clean on that one. biggrin

Hard to argue that list, however that 04' USC should have played Auburn that year.

  • The best teams I remember are the USC teams that won the Natl. Championship in 1979 I think. Lott, Bruce Mathews, Marcus Allen, HOF's. Dennis Smith, Jeff Fisher, Charles White was heisman trophy winner and Allen was his FB. 3 or 4 more guys who went on to play a long time in NFL. Think that year or year before they shared title with Bama, They beat Bama head to head but lost to some team like Oregon or Wash St.

I think those Nebraska teams were the best of BCS era, they dismantled everyone. USC of 2004 right up there and if LSU wins than you have to put them there. I for one feel LSU deserves the championship no matter what. Bama lost at home and still got to play again, as a fan of the SEC I am happy, but a fan of what's right and what would be fun than I would have put Okie St.

Hate that LSU is penalized for playing and beating Bama on the road, LSU played the best schedule, had the best wins across the board. Bama only beat one good team and that was Arkansas. Before game everyone said LSU had chance to play in BCS championship if they lost because on the road.

I think the 2 top teams are playing but it is very unfair to LSU, reminds me of 86 when UK BB had to beat Bama,LSU 4 times in one year. THis is akin in FB to playing twice.

    Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

IF LSU can beat Bama again then they will have probably the most impressive resume but I still think Bama is a better team than LSU. Bama was the better team in that 1st game but their kicker choked. I expect Bama to win this time as they should've the first time too.

Screw Les Miles! I don't know why I just can't stand him.

Me thinks Cobby is right, Bama wins this time because they think they deserve it

  • This LSU team may not be as good as the U's best in the 90's... But I have NEVER SEEN a more physical and fast of a defense as this LSU team... Their secondary is as good as a low-end NFL team.
