Wow, Kentucky does NOT get NCAA Regional

  • UK does NOT get to host this weekend. Stunning. National analysts shocked too, apparently that Miami got one and UK didn't. You have to wonder whether history & venue played major role.

  • How can you have the record they have, the quality wins, and at one point held a No. 1 ranking and NOT host a regional?

    That's amazing.

  • Really aggravating. Maybe the team can use this slight for motivation. I agree with Matt, have to wonder if its the lack odf brande name appeal/tradition, the relatively smaller, less appealing stadium, or the late season slump. But UK deserved to host.

SEC only gets 3. ACC gets 5. State of north carolina gets 2, state of florida gets 3, state of texas gets 3. Barnhart and Slive should be raising hell about this behind ther scenes.

  • Nobody to blame but themselves can't lose 4 out of 5 to Miss St. Can't lose to Murray St and can't Lose 2 vs Louisville. I knew getting swept by Miss St would kill them.

The NCAA is paying us back for winning the basketball championship, in addition to that guy from Washington still being in the driver's seat there.

Hey Emmert........... stick it where the sun doesn't shine! Hater!!

  • It's baseball. Every team has a bad few bad losses. Late season slump wasn't ideal, but this team did enough to host.

Right, but they also were the first team in the country to 40 wins. Won 43 games overall. Won 20 games against SEC competition. Went 6-3 vs. LSU/South Carolina/Florida (the SEC teams that are hosting). Reached the SEC Tournament semifinals. Were ranked in the top 10 for something like 6 weeks until final week of the season.

And there still wasn't a single national analyst who even considered the thought they wouldn't host. Think about this: If the SEC didn't have the ridiculous switch to single elimination in semifinals and Miss. State had to beat them twice yesterday with a patchwork pitching staff (which I'm not sure they would have) would UK be hosting?

Exactly. It's not like anyone is saying they got hosed on getting one of the eight national seeds. If you're Kentucky you have to wonder what exactly you have to do to get a site? Maybe this is the final straw that has UK improve/rebuild Cliff Hagan Stadium?

Hard to tell. Some of the national guys are saying it's very possible Kentucky goes to the Purdue regional (which is actually at the minor league park in Gary, Ind.) as the No. 1 seed. It's not unprecedented. It's happened a few other times.

***As I was typing this the NCAA Baseball chairman said during SEC final broadcast that he knew the UK not hosting question would come up and side-stepped up, putting it off until teams are announced tomorrow. Did say, unprompted, that there have been times they put a team as a No. 1 seed in their regional despite not hosting. Sounds like UK...

  • PerfectGame.org's Kendall Rogers just spoke to Gary Henderson. Here were his tweets:

Feel bad for #UK coach Gary Henderson. Just got off the phone with him. He said "I'm just shocked. I don't really know what to say."

    and

Henderson added: "You start to wonder what's behind it. What exactly is the criteria We'll make the best of it."

Hey, maybe the NCAA is so mad at John Calipari it took out anger on Gary Henderson? (kidding. kind of.)

UK hosted a regional in 2006. Are you (and all of the other writers who are wringing their hands on twitter) saying that Cliff Hagan has fallen that far behind all of the other college baseball stadiums in 6 years?

It was behind then too. But UK won the SEC that year, which means the committee couldn't really come up with a reason that time. But there were major issues that had to be solved that year (and were, but only to varying degrees), not the least of which was the fire marshal nearly put the brakes on all of it because of access into and out of the stadium after they added temporary seating. If I remember correctly, lighting was also an issue.

UK still put on a fine event that weekend, but we're talking 6 years ago and what has really been added/upgraded over there? Not much. A new scoreboard. Not much else.

  • The only reason that UK didn't get a regional site I believe is the outdated stadium. UK was talking about a new stadium when Cohen was here. I believe it is past the talking stage. I believe there are some softball stadiums that have larger seating capicity. The team had only lost two series this year. Beating LSU, S.C. and Florida six out of nine is great. We shouldn't be pentalizing the baseball team for something they cannot control.

I think this is the one thing that Matt was referring to earlier, about the team still being a #1 seed BUT not hosting. They give us the #1 seed but don't have to return to the Cliff again. Can't have this sort of thing happen again, if we get a #1 seed, we need to be hosting. Cliff Hagan is not up to par, and as is we won't be hosting the NCAA's again

    Hogan_Ryan

  • But if Purdue can host at a stadium in Gary, Indiana, can't the Cats host at the Legends' stadium, or is there a rule against using professional facilities? (Or maybe a scheduling conflict?)

Why allow one school to "host" despite work going on at its stadium yet not work with UK, if the stadium is the issue? I guess if Purdue has been using that other stadium all year, that might make the difference, but I don't follow the sport closely enough to know that.

I just wonder if there's any significant edge to being a No. 1 seed in baseball. If there is, great. But if not, this team should not have been penalized. With AUX seating, Cliff Hagan Stadium is FINE for an NCAA regional. Not a super regional, but a regional.

I completely agree Jeff. There was no sense in penalizing our guys for the stadium, not after the kind of year they had. But it's obvious that the NCAA is sending that message. It's sad because our guys deserved better than that

I think it has to with bid you put in and UK bid for Cliff Hagan. You also have to basically the NCAA certain income, I'm told.
