Yahoo connects HC Al Golden to recruiting scandal at Miami

  • Also lists plenty of players that eventually ended up at....Louisville. Former Miami asst. and current UL asst. Clint Hurtt was connected neck deep in the Shapiro stuff and you can't help but think it's only a matter of time before they start looking into how all those former Miami commits ended up at Louisville.

Oh and Al Golden is screwed big time.

Hurricanes coach Al Golden's staff used booster's associate in potential recruiting violations - Yahoo! Sports

From Yahoo! Sports: A Yahoo! Sports investigation shows members of Al Golden's Miami coaching staff used former equipment manager Sean Allen in potential recruiting violations.

  • I'm very disappointed in Golden. I mean, he played at Penn St. under Jopa and knows how to do things the right way......oh wait....

As for Hurtt & UaVel, I'm guessing there will be a lot of breath holding down West on I-64 as the Miami situation gets deeper.

  • I'd be very surprised if the NCAA does anything to Louisville. Hell, they haven't even done anything to Miami yet. Now, they might give Hurtt a show cause or some slap on the wrist. But I don't think this will affect Louisville much outside of Hurtt being banned from coaching (Cholly and Jurich aren't going to do anything to him).

Yes, I think there's a good possibility Hurtt being axed, and they had better hope he didn't do anything like he did at Miami in getting those guys up there.

  • I don't see much here that could potentially implicate the Cards save for the tenuous connection between some recruits committing to UofL after Hurtt joined Strong's staff.

Hurtt may have gotten those connections due to Miami's misdoings prior to joining UofL but you can't say that Miami's boosters pushed for Louisville commitments. If Hurrt is punished it will be by the NCAA because I guarantee that Jurich won't bat an eye unless Louisville is somehow implicated, which I can't see how they will be.

  • Yikes.

So, just by way of logical analysis:

UM has Miami Northwestern on lockdown, pulling the best athletes from there. Hurtt leaves UM for UL, taking position with Strong. Miami Northwestern talent suddenly starts choosing UL. Clint Hurtt is accused of Shapiro of numerous nefarious recruiting violations while at UM. Shapiro is backed up (to some extent) in bankruptcy depositions by Allen. Allen's cell phone records show numerous conversations with three of UL's top recruits from Miami NW during the recruiting period prior to their commitments, and submits deposition testimony about Bridgewater and a high-end steakhouse in Miami. Miami NW recruits still choose Hurtt (and UL) over Allen (and UM), despite the calls and (presumably) steaks.

I'm not just looking through blue-tinged glasses here, am I guys? This looks fishy as hell to you guys too, right? I'm sure someone will be along directly to tell me that there is absolutely no way this impacts UL in any capacity, but damn, what a thing to have hanging over your head during conference expansion and in the wake of several of the biggest football-related scandals of our lives.

This particular piece has nothing to do with Hurtt but if you have followed this entire investigation Hurtt was neck deep in the Shapiro part of the scandal. He will eventually get a show cause order which will end his tenure at UL.

The part that will be interesting is if the NCAA will ever decide to look into why all those former Miami kids decided to pick UL. Maybe they will and maybe they won't but the big thing is just ending Hurtt's career at UL and thus crippling their connection in Miami.

Yeah, I really haven't been following all the goings on closely.

Looking at JDH's analysis, things certainly do give off the aroma of a fine french cheese.

  • HUrtt recruited these Miami kids (Bridgewater, etc.) using hookers, cash and alcohol. Once the cover was blown he ran to UL and so did the players. Does Hurtt's shady recruiting of these kids make them at ineligible at UL because he was doing the samething to get them to UL or does the NCAA have some kind of rule that would say Hurtt had to cease contact with these kids once the ocver was blown. Either way the scumbag should get the axe from the NCAA. Another thing is what did these kids accept from these guys? Is their amateur status in question once the investigation is done?

  • Wouldn't it be a down right shame of some of those Miami kids got some suspension at the start of this season.

    Cll80

  • At the rate the NCAA is going, their eligibility will be over anyway. This does explain why it has taken so long to hear anything though, if the investigation is expanding to include the current staff. Whether it ever affects UL anymore than losing Hurtt, remains to be seen ( though some heavy wishful thinking can't Hurtt), he needs to be gone. They already have him dead to right, but won't hand any charges out til everything is done. The evidence on him was part of the Feds investigation of Shapiro on his federal racketeering case, so they can't claim it's hearsay. Heck, without the Feds basically coercing Shapiro to notify the NCAA or they would themselves, who knows how long this would still be going on; but then again neither Hurtt or those Miami recruits would be at UL.

If your referring to Penn State and Miami I certainly wouldn't rule it out. I am shocked that it has been allowed to continue @ Miami. They definitely deserve the death penalty now after showing a complete inability to monitor the goings on in their program.

  • What's the matter with you fellow's? Why the suspicion? Elite Florida 4 & 5 star recruits who could play anywhere in college football decided to go with a small city college who competes in the 6th best conference. And that school has never signed this level of recruit ever before in their history. Now honestly, who could suspect something fishy with that situation, really?

    JHB4UK

  • Yes mosscat Penn St and Miami. Psu for the most egregious cover up in NCAA history. And Miami for reoccurring violation and scandals. Just amazing how Miami kept cheating while under investigation for cheating. Did he think he could get away with it because they were under investigation no one would expect it?

Miami has the history now, so you can see why a south Florida kid would want to stay home. Now back in the early 80s is when FSU and Miami were doing some serious cheating....

  • If more than just a handful of people would blow up the coverage on UNC, they could be in the same boat. Miami is directly in the NCAA wheelhouse on this: current recruiting violations, history. PSU and UNC is a bit harder to get to, but can be done. The Clery Act that has been mentioned in relation to the PSU case deals with accreditation and the NCAA requires all schools to be accredited. PSU could lose that due to criminal cover-up. UNC could lose it based on institutional academic fraud. Probably not, but a case could be made for it.

My closest HS buddy now lives in NC. A guy he works with is an uncle to one of original kids involved with the scandal. Not a big name player, I believe he was a wrestler possibly. Anyhow, I think he was eventually expelled. Even then there were multiple athletes from several sports, both male and female, already involved. After that initial bunch, coverage went hush, hush for a while. Now it's itching to come back out, but can never seem to get full traction. I have heard that UNC has a prestigious journalism school with alot of alums in positions of power and influence in that field and could be blocking that outflow of info.

I wonder if their prestigious Alumni Association i.e. ESPN has something to do with that?

BlueGhost, I think he's refering to Louisville not Miami. I know it's tough on some fans to understand how a Highly respected defensive coordinator from a National Championship Florida team with deep recruiting roots in the state of Florida, can come to the state of Kentucky as a head coach and essemble an excellent staff to a "city" college and then bring this caliber of recruits with him. Makes you want to scatch your head.
