You guys called

  • me crazy! But I'm telling you I'm more convinced than ever that Towles is either number 1 or 2 after reading the practice report.

  • Really? I didnt get that out of it. Sounded more like the freshman in competition for 3rd.

IMHO....no way Newton is #2. Like the kid but with the injury and past performance just not going to happen. Again I hope Newton proves me wrong. Class act and hard worker.

  • towles is going to redshirt. whitlow runs the wildcat. smith the starter. joker did this same thing hartlines sr year hartline was the starter all along. people learn to read coach speech are staff knows the starter and the backup the only real question is who redshirts and that is pretty obvious if towles isnt gonna play u redshirt him

I'm still not convinced newton has been eliminated as the starter, and I definitely don't think he is 3 or 4. Honestly, they are all the same for various reasons. Smith is the safe choice early, newton is the most seasoned, towles is the upside ky favorite, and whitlow the mystery factor freak athlete. Given the pressure to win and appease the fan base early, I expect smith to win for the above mentioned reasons. Just my opinion. I'm good with any of the 4 options, as I think wr hands are the real issue... Go Cats!!!

  • I think Sanders said enough about Newton to say that he is still not ready from a game standpoint because of his injury. Smith will be the starter, but I am sure with Newton being suspect, that Towles and Whitlow are getting more reps then Joker would like right now

I think this is the most likely scenario.

  • Without having seen any of them since last season and two frosh I have never seen, it is really going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out. At any rate I am confident that Joker will do what's best for the UK FB team and not what he percieves is best for him personally.

I agree with your comments, I didnt mean to imply he was being influenced on his decision. Im not even sure your comment was even alluding to my comment lol. I think he will weigh all the pros and cons for all the Qbs. I just wanted to point out that in the end I think they may honestly be 4 equal options, as in the race for the position is literally a dead heat... I honestly don't think the qb race is half as important as the wr corp stepping up ten fold as far as this season is concerned.

Yeah, IMO if we see Towles this year it won't be a good thing. . .

Agreed. I want him to know every single aspect of the offense before he hits the field. We've got to bring this kid along the right way. He's got a chance to be special one day. Whitlow is such a good athlete that he need to hit the field in some fashion ASAP. Smith #1, Newton #2 if healthy which I think he'll be healthy by the Louisville game and Whitlow Wildcat option.

    Bro ur still crazy lol
    #1 Max
    #2 Newton
    #3 Whitlow wildcat
    (May even flip flop #2 & #3)
And Redshirt PT if hes not #1
Thats just my gut feeling, everyone has there own opinion.

    Just win....

this. Towles looks like a puppy that hasn't grown into his paws yet. Max by far looks the best and most consistent from what I've seen. Just look at his form verses the others in the pics. Unless he's doing something poorly I don't know about, he's the most fundamental of the 4.

Therefore, like Quags said, Max will start, Morgan will be #2, AND Whitlow may see time in the Wildcat. The questuion in my mind is, if Max goes down at some point in the season, what do they do?

Do they give Morgan the shot? Expand Whitlow's package? or maybe even burn Towles's redshirt? Lot of factors could come into play in that scenerio. Let's just hope that Max stays healthy, and is everything and more than we expect!

    Catmando

  • Yeah I think the "competition" has been settled for awhile now, Sanders pretty much spelled it out last week with Max being the clear number one. I believe they want Morgan to understand that he has to keep pushing and working hard because like last year you never know when someone will get injured and they may need him.

I believe Morgan is the backup even though he may not be back to 100%. He may not have the huge arm that he once had but knowing the offense and being able to read a defense is still two steps ahead of the freshmen. I think he can be an effective QB, not great, but effective if we get decent play from our OLine and WRs. (If the OL and WRs aren't better it wouldn't matter if we had Tom Brady at QB)

About the Wildcat package, I think some folks are going to be greatly disappointed if they think that it's going to be resurrected as it was run with Randall Cobb. Cobb was a great athlete that happened to play QB in HS, he only attempted 122 passes (99 as a freshman) in his 3 years at UK. He completed just over half and threw as many interceptions as he did touchdowns. As great as Cobb is he wasn't a great QB, he just wasn't much of a passing threat. Teams that understood how to defend the read-option could limit his effectiveness, that's why you would see us run it for a series or two in some games and then abandon it while other games we could keep going back to it.

Whitlow, from what I understand, is a different beast altogether, he is a natural QB who happens to also be a great athlete. We may see some designed runs with Whitlow but I don't expect that to be a big part of his game. What I do expect, is to see Whitlow be able to run a variation of the roll-out occasionally with a true run/pass option depending on how the defense reacts. I think we will also see him be able to scramble out of trouble and turn some of those into big plays, but all of that is likely to be just a small part of his game. Above all else I expect him to be more of a traditional QB, stay in the pocket, hit the open man QB. And to be perfectly honest unless Max and Morgan are either injured or ineffective at moving the team I'm just not sure what role JW will have this season. I guess I could see him getting mop-up duty in a few games or maybe incorporate him into some trick plays but I think that would only be to get some separation between him and Towles.

  • Towles needs to RS. Playing QB in the SEC as a true FR is rarely a good thing. Smith and Newton cam man the QB spot well enough. There are MUCH better weapons around them this fall. And, I would like to see Whitlow play with a Wildcat package.

  • I've said from the beginning, if Patrick Towles sees legitimate snaps, that means something disastrous has happened a the QB position.

Redshirting Towles would be a luxury to allow him to continue to develop.

  • I like that his attitude is that if he is needed he would be ready. You gotta love that confidence but another year and he could be one of the top QBs in the SEC with a redshirt.
