Zach Myers

  • So from reports from Matt Smith and others sounds like Myers may be the heir apparent at C. Myers apparently in his first lifting on campus was benching only 5 lbs less than Smith who is one of the strongest guys on the team and has the nasty attitude on the field you love from an interior guy from looking at his tapes.

Sounds like another guy that Summers knocked it out of the park on.

if he has the endorsement of Matt Smith, then he has my endorsement. Just my hope that we won't have to use him very much if at all this year.

  • That's good to hear, especially with Sam Simpson's premature retirement. Kentucky has been really fortunate with a series of really solid centers over the past several years.

It would be really nice if Myers lives up to Smith's praises and is a solid back up this year and ready to step in next season.

  • I saw Matt's note that Smith said some of the new guys were only 5 lbs below him on some of the lifts, but I did not see any names. Where did Smith name Meyers? Not doubting you, just curious where this came from. I don't follow Twitter very regularly.

Here's the quote I transcribed from Matt:

"Zach Myers I think was five pounds less than I was in the bench press so some of those guys are really strong as freshmen," Smith said. "I know I wasn't benching this much. Now that Chandler Burden is gone I'm on top of those boards but they're right there pushing me. It's good for me that they're in the weight room pushing me and good for them that they can look up to someone who's been here for awhile. They're all athletic and can move around out there so we'll see how they do in pads. Jordan Swindle is one of our faster guys on the offensive line."

    Good stuff. Thanks, Matt.

Thanks for the full quote Matt I had seen bits and pieces on twitter but knew he specifically pointed to Myers as being a beast in the weight room.

Really sounds like Swindle, Myers, and Watson all may have a shot to play some this year which is the first time in a long time we've seen that happen for big uglies. Good that we got so many guys that may be able to play and still have time to develop guys like Jones and Toth.

  • Hopefully Love and Eatmon Nared come through to give Summers his sixth and seventh guys so Myers, Watson etc. can redshirt. As stout as they may be now, imaginme them as fith year seniors. With a fith year senior Towles behind them.

I'm definitely a Joker guy, but pulling redshirts for 20 snaps their first year is not something I like to see.

My guess is that at least one of the freshmen OL plays. Watson would be may early front runner, but OT seems like it needs more help than OG. Swindle may be in line for some time. I am excited to get this football season rolling.

  • ^Yeah, I'm guessing Watson and Meyers play, maybe Swindle. As always, I'm excited to see who this year's "surprise players" are once camp gets up and rolling. It seems like every year there are those couple of guys who show up ready to get after it and take the staff/team by storm with how quickly they catch onto the playbook, work hard, out-perform older guys on the team, and basically establish themselves as being too talented to leave on the sideline. A few years ago it was Cobb, then it was Warford, then it was Dupree and Miller (and a few others last year); whereas there are also guys every year who all of us fans assume will play a good bit but who ends up redshirting for any number of reasons (e.g. Alex Smith a couple of years ago, Glenn Faulkner last year, etc.).

    mjdotson

  • Who are we looking to replace Matt Smith with next year as starting center? Zach West? Zach Meyers? Someone else? I think I have seen West's name mentioned somewhere in this regard.

If West, I hope he gets a lot of reps on the line (center and or guard) and wouldn't feel too worried with an experienced sophomore that has used his redshirt to gain experience with grow into the system.

If Meyers, I would hate for us to start at center a redshirt freshman who has never played in a game.

Is there someone else we may be starting at center for 2013?

  • Watson definitely plays this fall. Could be the best FR OL in the SEC.

    1. Zach West is early front runner to take RG opposite of Larry Warford at LG. West is a good size kid...I fear he may be a year away strength wise to play in the middle of OL...but I'd argue his future should be solid OL at UK.
    2. Zach Meyers is slotted at C and hopefully fits his way into taking the C spot when Smith graduates this year. SImpson having to give up football left a sizeable hole at C down the road..

    - I agree that we need an OT to play this year. So Watson is probably the best young OL in this class, but with West and Warford at OG...it may be Swindle that takes off the RS and gets snaps at RT. I don't think anyone is comfortable with Mitchell and lord knows who at that spot.

    K__TIME

  • Mitchell wasn't too bad in the spring game, but he was also going against our number 2s. While I don't think he is an all-star, he will probably be similar to what we had last season at starter (obviously that is still not what we want, but it can be serviceable).

Mitchell while trying to fill in for BJ Murphy early last year was abysmal. He was hopeless vs. WKU in the opener and didn't really do much better until a half legged Hines and BJ Murphy were forced back soon as possible. I was stunned that Mitchell was so slow footed/reacting last year....I wasn't shocked that he was not so strong/powerful, but all I heard was he had good feet when he got to UK. He looked like he was walking in quick sand..

Didn't notice him in spring game...so maybe he'll be ready to play this year. I honestly have not heard a good thing in his game at all....in fact when Nord-Eatmon sort of failed this spring to stick at OT...it was a huge blow to Summer's confidence which is why when the JUCO kid flipped his commitment to Ole Miss (Daron Bailey)...Summer's was pissed as he was hoping he could play at OT spot opposite of Miller.

    K__TIME

  • bailey had a pretty bd injury and was projected at guard. so i dont think his commitment was an indictment to mitchell

    quagmire

  • To me, the OL is the key to the system and Mitchell is the weak link. I know Summers likes to take long lean guys and build them up and not every OL needs to be 320, but Mitchell at RT and sub-290 makes me nervous. I haven't been impressed with Mitchell in the chances I've had to watch him either.

If we weren't so thin at OG, I think our best OL might be:

    OC Matt Smith (6-4/296)
    RG Larry Warford (6-4/343)
    LG Jordan Watson (6-4/324)
RT Teven Eatmon-Nared (6-7/342) or Zach West (6-4/312)
    LT Darrian Miller (6-5/295)

I believe we'reso thin at OL though, I expect Watson and Swindle to be forced into action as well as Meyes if Smith were to have injury issues @ C. Anyone heard much about Max Godby (listed as Matt's backup

  • MMM...dont see ant true frosh playing on O-line this year...behind our "starters" we have experience in T.Woods. TE Nared, then Shaq Love, if any do..it would be at center with a injury to Matt Smith. This is a GREAT thing...(not having to push true frosh into early SEC action.) I hope guys like Swindle, Meyers, watson, Jones..ect get a full year of prep before seeing the field!

Forgot about Love. Not expecting much from Mitchell or Woods. I still think Watson sees action. If Smith were to go down, You'd probably see Warford move over to center.

  • Funny thing about Woods is, I remember when he signed with UK, Brooks said he is one of those "first man off the bus" kind of O-linemen we needed more of.

    mjdotson

  • Mitchell is a starter...at the tackle opposite Darrian Miller. If Smith goes down..id say Godby or West would move over...West was worked as a possible center.

Dude...Trevino Woods has been passed up by the entire OL recruits the past 3 years. He is not good no matter if he had eons of experience. Nared was simply a bust this spring....now the kid is tall and young, but he was the biggest dissapointment of the spring. I have no clue about Love...he has added some weight, but is he ready this year...Don't know.

I'd wager easily Watson gets first crack at playing if any of the Guards or Center goes down. They move West to C to SMith gets hurt and Watson probably beats out any other kids at OG. OT is a whole iffy ball game...Swindle maybe? But keep your eyes on RT and see if we simply don't line up Robinson at TE to protect that side of OL. And if we do that, we are simply running 3 man routes in passing game...not so hard to cover 3 guys with 6-7 defenders.

    K__TIME

  • IMO other than Miller and West the coaching staff doesnt know who will be on the OL in 2013. That is why it is going to be important to give some of the young Freshmen some playing time this fall.

Miller, West, Mitchell, Eatmon, Love and some Walk ons is all that will be available other than this years Freshmen and any incoming Freshmen next year

That looks to be the weakest part of the team in 2013 unless some of the young Freshmen blow up and get ready to go. I think there is some talent there in that young group but we all know that it is difficult for players that young to form a cohesive OL.

    Cll80

  • Trevino Woods, Kevin Mitchell, TE Nared. Im not confident in any of the 3. Still think Shaq love might have a chance because he switched over. I mean they all have a chance I'm just not counting on any of them to play particularly well. Just hope one weak link on the Oline doesn't keep us from being good this year.
