some interesting notes from Jarmon today

  • I know there is already a thread about Jarmon's retirement, but I wanted to talk about some of the other things that Jarmon said on the radio today. Here are some interesting notes about Joker and the team....

    1. He is in full support of Joker Phillips. Thinks he just needs time, but he loves the players that are coming into the program.

    2. He said that the players that left the program over the last year is a good thing and not a bad thing. Its because we are bringing in better players and the old guys would no longer see the field.

    3. He talked about former players being critical of Joker and the current staff. He said the ones that are complaining are the same ones that were causing trouble and headaches when they were on the team.

I didn't get to listen to everything, but that was some interesting stuff that I heard. He actually got me pretty excited listening to him talk because he was so commited to Joker and the future of the program.

  • He could be a VERY successful college assistant coach if he chose that path.

  • He also mentioned that UK as a whole felt that in 2007 that they were on the verge of having a special season and competing for the sec title. Said that what set them back were players 34, 35, and so on. Said the 11 on O, 11 on D, & 11 on SP (33 pkayers) were good to go toe to toe w/ anyone n the league, but it was players 34 on down that held them back. Said that Joker is getting those players n the program now and thats what is gonna give UK a chance to compete for the SEC title.

I have to agree for the most part. When I look down the depth chart I get excited about guys that might be 2nd or 3rd string especially on D outside of Corner. We still need some help at WR on offense. If Sweat and Legree can come in and be special we've got a serious chance the next couple of years to be really good. We're stacked at RB, I like our QB's. Still need some depth on the Oline. I like the overall direction of the program.

  • we've always had SOME talent on the DL, even in the Peters and Pryor days they were together, but the depth behind them wasn't there, and at many of the other key positions. NOW you look at the depth that we have on D, RB, TE, and other positions although young look VERY promising. As was mentioned before and in many other threads. If Joker makes it past this season, and I fully expect him to, we have a chance to have some very special teams in the next couple of years reminiscent of the 07 Woodson years. I just can't wait to kick off this year

  • Great post, Prince.

    Thanks for sharing.

There isn't a person with more UK football gravitas than JJ, so we should all reread his thoughts and be patient... (Myself being #1 culprit to storm the gates at signs of trouble.)

  • UK had a LOT of NFL caliber players on the roster in 2007, drafted or free agents. It remains to be seen if Joker and Co have replaced that talent with additonal NFL prospects.

  • Remind me again. Which players left the program early? They were the reason we sucked last year?

I didn't see anyone saying the players that left were the reason we sucked last year. This thread isn't even talking about last year, it's talking about why we should be encouraged about the future and why we should have reason to believe this year will be better.
We all know last year sucked. Let's move on and support the team NOW.

Playing the guessing game with players who have left the program won't get us anywhere. The next player from 2010-2012 who has left this program and made an impact at another BCS program will be the first one.

Exactly. The players that left couldn't play or were trouble. Case and point, both of the kids from Louisville that left this year were cancers. And apparently criminals. Those guys need to be removed from the locker room.

Chemistry is key to having a good season. All year with the baseball team you kept hearing that the biggest difference with the team was the chemistry. There wasnt the fighting within the team this year. Now hopefully this football team can play together and get this thing back on track.
Joker is the guy we need on the job. WHEN he does well he won't bolt for the first big name job that he is offered. I think he wants to stay here and build a GREAT football program. Remember guys, he is one of us. A DIEHARD KENTUCKY FAN. He wants to win just as bad as we do.

Let's not single out players that leave and accuse them of being cancers or unable to play on a fan board.

Wilson and Hall got in trouble with the law, giving the program a black eye, although Wilson's was far more severe and done as a returning starter still on the team.

Jarmon is free to speak his opinion, but I don't see anyone reason for fans to harshly criticize (other than Wilson and Hall) departing players and accuse them of anything.

If we're willing to stick up for the players that may be struggling within the program, we need to accord the same respect to those who leave, or at least refrain from running them down.

I would agree that fans may not be in a position to pass judgement on those guys but I believe that as a former player JJ has every right to make that point. Without saying names JJ pretty much put the mark on everyone that has left in the last year or so.

Agreed. Didn't want to see the thread devolve into fans calling out players. JJ's a different story.

Agreed. The guy has put in the work and sacrifice for the program. He has every right to express his opinion whether it's good or bad. I am sure he has more insight to the program than most and has first hand knowledge of things good and bad. He was great on the radio yesterday worth a listen for sure.

  • Jarmon also said that UK players are WELL AWARE of the trash talk coming from the Ville. Said everyday it is mentioned during workouts, as the players break from practice, etc.

A few months ago I thought Louisville would beat UK by about 10 points but all of this cockiness/pompus attitude coming from a team that finished 7-6 has got me feeling half way decent the CATS will win.

    SEC Fanatic

  • Now that he's officially retired, UK needs to hire Jarmon in some capacity like yesterday. Guy is very, very sharp, has bled for this program and obviously has played and knows football at a very high level.

So are we saying Zipp Duncan was a problem player at UK...as he is one of the most vocal critics of the new regime....I always thought Zipp Duncan was best OL to play at UK since the John Schlarman/Todd Perry of early 90's.
