Baseball Trivia

  • I thought it would be fun for everyone to share their favorite baseball trivia. I don't have anything off the top of my head, but I'll bring something to the table later. And if anyone knows what team has been no-hit the most, I'd be interested in knowing that.

  • Question:

Why is GABP extremely hot after every Reds' game?

  • Here's an interesting one:

In 1910, Chalmers Auto Co. offered a car to the player who ended up with the higher season BA between Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie. Heading into the final day of the season, Cobb had the lead and took the day off. Lajoie went 8 for 8 in a double-header to make close. Cobb ultimately won .385 to .384. In 1978, it was discovered that Cobb was given credit for 1 game twice in 1910, in which he went 2 for 3. Taking that extra game out of the equation drops Cobb to .383. Which would have taken away one of his 12 batting titles.

  • Turns out, since everyone hated Ty Cobb, the St. Louis Browns did everything they could to help Lajoie, even offering a fur coat to the oficial scorer to change an error to a hit. That resulted in the banning of Browns' manager Jack O'Connor and their coach Harry Howell from baseball. I guess I should point out that Lajoie was an Indian. This was the other team helping him beat Cobb. LOL.

The Chalmer's people ultimately presented both players with cars. Lol. I like that story.

I still can't get over how the MLB handled Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose. I hope the MLB tanks because they'll get what's coming to them.

Pete deserved what he got! He knew the rules, broke the rules, lied about breaking the rules, tried to cover up breaking the rules, etc. I think he deserves to be in the HOF as does Jackson but I have no problem with Pete never being allowed to be a part of MLB again. And I'm a lifelong Reds fan and was one of Pete's biggest fans.

  • Here's a couple a friend of mine and I exchanged last week.

    1. How many MLB teams have been located in 3 different cities?

    2. How many MLB teams have never changed names during their existence? Researching this one was fun because there are some funky names out there; Orphans, Goats, Beaneaters, etc.

I agree. But not being in the HOF? Joke...plus it's not like he did ANYTHING to be banned? I bet on the Reds to win tonight...Should I be banned from going to a MLB game today? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Here is my favorite trivia question because I saw it in person:

Name the first player to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same inning.

It used to be a cooler thing to talk about because it was the only time it's ever been done. Very few people ever get to see a one-of-a kind occurrence in baseball (and I'd be very surprised if more than 500 people were in the stands the night this happened). But somebody else has done it since, so it's no longer unique.

Mickey Mantle, Ken Caminiti, Chili Davis, and Eddie Murray are the all time record holders in this field, with current players Nick Swisher, Tony Clark, and Mark Teixeira gaining on them.

$1,000 it is one of those players?

If there were only 500 people there, it had to be an Expos game, or Marlins. Lol. I got nobody. Great question.

  • 1. - I have no clue

    2. - just guessing here... Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, Marlins, Angels, Rockies, Diamondbacks, and Astros.

    Any of those right?

All those would have been good guesses, but it's not somebody you'd think.

This is an infielder who hit 134 career homers.

The other guy that did it was an infielder with 69 career homers.

I think this is correct--both were later signed by the Reds, but neither ever saw major league action.

As for the venue--it happened on a very cold night in a stadium right by the ocean, at least according to Oil Can Boyd.

IF you are seriously comparing you betting on a game to Pete then there is no reason to continue this conversation.

2 of the 3 for question 1 are pretty easy once you hear the answers. the 3rd is a little harder.

For question #2, Mets, Marlins, Angels (they've changed city names but not mascot), Rockies and Diamondbacks are right.

Cubs also played as Orphans, Colts and White Stockings.

Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles in 1901-02, then as NY Highlanders from 1903-1912

Red Sox also played as Boston Americans from 191-1907

The Dodgers have some of the best names, Also played as Brooklyn Dodgers, Brooklyn Robins, Brooklyn Superbas, Brooklyn Bridegrooms, Brooklyn Grooms, Brooklyn Grays and Brooklyn Atlantics.

And the Astros were the Colt 45s from 1962-1964

I'm thinking Carlos Baerga did it. Have no idea who did it first.
