Cincinnati Reds Discussion: July Edition

  • Can't believe it's already June and the Reds are 2 and a half games in front of the Cards. Leake w/another solid outing and Votto, Bruce and Phillips are really swinging some hot bats. If the Reds can get ANY consistency from Stubbs, Cozart and Frazier they'll run away w/the Central.

Make it 3.5 now. . . Bats have really come alive lately, Votto with another huge game, has his average all the way up to .345 now.

  • Leads NL and second only to Hamilton in MLB OPS now at 1.097. Guy is getting into a serious groove the last couple of weeks. He's one of those guys that, when he's on, you start getting surprised when he makes outs. That's when you know a guy is special.

The Reds picked Nick Travieso, a right-handed pitcher from McCarthy High in Fort Lauderdale, with the 14th pick in the draft.

  • Need to get this thread kick started. Reds up 3 in the NL central and have just completed a sweep of the Indians. Is there a better hitter in baseball than Joey Votto and that includes one Josh Hamilton. For consistency in all facets at the plate, I wouldn't trade Votto for any other hitter PERIOD.

Reds are getting solid contributions from Frazier, Cozart, Ludwig and Phillips is really swinging a hot bat as well. I don't see Cincy running away with things but they are going to be a contender throughout the entire season no doubt. The only reason the Reds haven't widened their lead is that the bullpen has been a wee bit shaky over the last week and blown some games. Oh well, it happens.

  • Make that 4 games up. . . Wonder how serious they are about moving Frazier to LF when Rolen comes back???

signature image signature image signature image

    BG631

  • I wonder how Rolen will feel about riding the pine when he returns. Let's face it, he's shot! He still can be a presence off the bench, a late inning defensive sub etc. but with the way Frazier, Heisey and Ludwick are hitting the ball, I just don't see room for Rolen as an everyday player. He has little to no pop left in the bat and he can't even hit for average. With Ludwick you get good pop and with Frazier you have a 270 hitter w/pop. I don't think Rolen has the ability to match either so why would you sit the producing players for a guy who hits like my sister???

  • Yet another quality start by a Reds starter, another sweep, six in a row for the Reds. This team really starting to look good. Hate to say it, but offense looks as good or better without Stubbs and Rolen. Defense is another story, but then defense is hardly a problem for this team.

Amen on Stubbs, and I fear that on Rolen, too. I'm willing to give the old guy the benefit of the doubt, but Frazier has been very solid IMO.

What about Votto's numbers the last two weeks? Good grief. It's like he's playing in a softball league:

.491 BA, .574 OBP, .818 SLG last 15 games. smoke

  • Last two nights have been hard to handle. Tough losses. You can make a good argument that the Reds should be on an 12- or 13-game winning streak right now. Not doing the little things that could help them take off and run away with this division.

Yep, I've been thinking the same thing. But the good news is they are still in 1st place!

  • Indeed it was...and in times like these I think back to 2 years ago when we were swept by a turrible Mariners team, scoring only 1 run total in 3 games.

I was in Seattle at the time and ready to jump off the Space Needle head first after getting shutout on Sunday by the "immortal" Ryan Rowland-Smith., for his one and only win in eleven decisions on the year.

Yet we overcame all that and other losses to come and still won the division with room to spare....and think the same holds true for this year.

I remember it well. Then they went to Oakland and got shut down, right?

We have an epic West Coast swing coming up, and I fear we could see a big plunge in the standings by the end of it.

  • Very frustrating. What good does it do to win 6 in a row and now lose 4 in a row. Very inconsistent.

Actually they went to Oakland and swept them, saving face on that whole road trip.

And yes, "the annual tour of death" starts on thursday. Will be in San Francisco for the games thursday and Friday, so my prescence will probable serve as the harbinger of doom for the whole trip.blackeye

Its amazing that back when there were only 2 divisions, the Reds made 3 of these 10-12 day West Coast trips A YEAR.

Thanks god for a good portion of that time, we had the best team running.flex

  • Great outing by Latos tonight. Hopefully it's not just a flash in the pan. Now if Chapman can work through his issues, we're on our way to the most solid pitching staff we had in years. Cueto seems to have worked through his issues (lack of run support didn't help matters) and Bailey have may finally made the break through we all thought he would made several seasons back.
