Daniel Stern Finally Did It

  • "It" being pissing me off. I've defended him 99% of the time and think he's gotten a bad rap. But this fining the Spurs 250 grand for resting their players is just wrong. Coaches don't owe other teams fans shit!! Coaches owe their players, owners, and city championships. If a coach has an old team that the NBA forces to play 4 games in 5 nights who is Stern to tell them they can't rest players? If you aren't familiar with the story I've provided a link. Complete BS!!

NBA fines San Antonio Spurs $250,000 for sitting players - ESPN

The NBA fined the San Antonio Spurs $250,000 for withholding key players in Thursday night's game against the Heat.

  • I agree with this 100%. If you're forcing the players to play this many games this many days in a row, I believe it is the individual coach's and team's ownership that should decide how they give their players the necessary rest.
They are the players for the teams, not necessarily for the league. It takes the teams to make the league. JMHO.

  • The only scenario I can see where the commissioner might step in is if a bad team started "resting" their starters every game trying to get the worst record to get the next years top pick in the draft. But this is far from that.

  • I'm still mad at him for not going down easy in Home Alone

  • He should retire and let Joe Pesci run the show.

  • I don't necessarily agree with Stern but I do see where he was coming from. It was basically forfeiting a game. The Spurs figured they weren't gonna win in Miami anyway so why not rest their key players. Thats not a good practice. But then again I don't think Stern can tell coaches when they can or can't rest older players. Danny Green resting was kinda puzzling unless he was injured. He's a young player.

A great character actor ... he was the voice of the narrator in the Wonder Years, the dad in Little Monsters and was in City Slickers not to mention Home Alone.

And let's not forget the classic Breaking Away. One of the best movies of that time. Of course him being good in Breaking Away doesn't fit my joke as well as his dorky roles later in his career.

they do this all the time. It's not just Spurs. By season end, you will see players getting rested left and right.

What difference does it make early, middle, and late season? I don't recall them fining any team then.

It's a strategy, and Pop has every right to rest the players.

Yep. It's not even debatable in my opinion. They had a question about this on ESPN's first page. Like 87% of the people responded said Stern was wrong to fine them anything. That's a lot.

No they don't send the players home on flights and they don't rest 4 players in a specific game this early in the season either. Clearly this situation was different or Stern wouldn't have reacted this way. I don't agree with Stern and I think coaches should be able to do what they want with their players but this isn't the typical situation you see.

4 maybe not, but they rest players ALL THE TIME. In fact spurs been doing this FOREVER.

Wade will be rested quite a bit later in the season, once they secure playoff and 1st place.

KG/PP will be resting games by end of the season this year...like they did last year.

Again, what's the difference between late in the season and beginning of the season? It's a risky move by spurs by guaranteeing a loss, but it's part of the strategy. ALso, they have no idea how they will do later in the season, but it's a choice Pop took.

Any team with old players will be rested. Heck, you could probably argue that Steve Nash will probably rest 3-4 extra games just to be 100% by end of the season. Like they said, they aren't going to rush bringing him back. Basically, they are just going to sit him for a while, so his age won't be a major factor when playoff comes. (He is probably fully recovered from injury already...)

If the only issue here is Pop sending them home...then 250k is extremely unjustified...

  • Cuban hits the nail on the head in this article. Talking about Stern having to protect the television right of the league. But also the Pop having to protect his players playing their 4th game in 5 nights.

Mark Cuban says David Stern was right to fine Spurs | ProBasketballTalk

Mark Cuban sticking up for David Stern. Maybe the Mayans were right, the end of the world might be nigh. That said, Cuban will be quick to remind you that the NBA is a business. And the first rule of business is “the customer is always right.

Mark Cuban is a POS!!! The fact that he's on the other side proves we're all right.

  • Did you read the article? He's on both sides. What has Mark Cuban ever done to be called a POS? Please explain.

    tWhit

  • He injects himself into everything. He wants to stop pros from playing in the olympics.

  • And that makes him a POS? I see.
