Great-Pyrenees ... Our New Dog

  • We are picking up the newest member of the family tomorrow... a full blooded Great-Pyrenees. He's about 8 weeks old... a fluffy little hair ball right now, but will grow to be 100 lbs or better. He will be the biggest "House Dog" we've ever had. It will be a chore... but worth it I hope.

I'm taking a Vacation day tomorrow and Monday, so I have a long, exciting weekend ahead of me. Right now... we are pondering names and could use your help. Here's a list my son and I have so far:

    Samson
    Baxter
    Levi
    Roddy

  • I found these images that resemble his appearance as a pup and what he may look like as an adult.

  • Congratulations! I love dogs. We have two Labs in the house. One is a chocolate named Dutch. The other is a yellow named Libby. I really like Baxter out of the ones you listed. That's a good name for a dog.

  • Those are beautiful dogs. Congrats, JJ. I too like Baxter. Btw, any truth that those dogs are runners?

They were bred to be guardians... of their owners, the home, other family pets (even cats) and various livestock. They keep the wolves and coyotes away... and have even been known to fight bears. He can get up 135 lbs... and will have a deep, booming bark. We are going to have him primarily as an indoor pet, so we shouldn't have to worry much about that other stuff. They are quiet and content as a house dog... unless a strange person or animal show up at the door. We will raise him to be friendly with ALL people... well, maybe not all. If they are wearing red cardinal attire, he will be trained to attack and dismember. biggrin

Btw... it's my son's dog and he went with the name "Roddy". He's a huge Falcons fan and he was named after Roddy White (I guess). My wife and I liked Samson and Baxter better... so of course, he wouldn't go with either of those names. Typical offspring. SMDH

  • JawJacker, they really are great dogs and extremely protective. My brother has one and that dog is uber loyal and won't even let me play fight my brother around him. You couldn't have made a better choice.

Hope you and your kid enjoy!

  • Congrats on the choice. Hope he's a great dog for you!

Thanks eagle_man... that is good to hear. He already wants to lay at our feet like he's a body guard or something. lol (he knows his job at an early age)

Btw.. here are the images of the pups that most resemble the one my son brought home. He picked one with some head color (not solid white)
