  • Was that the last episode tonight. If so I've got the last two on DVR. Nothing better than the bed and the TV in the morning when you work midnights.

I have a feeling he'll do a good job of dying in this last episode.

He did. Powers Boothe is good too. I forgot to mention him. He's always good.

  • Who's the guy that played Uncle Hatfield? The guy that murdered the first McCoy at the beginning. I've seen that guy before in movies and he's doing a good job in this series but I can't remember his name.

If you're talking about Jim Vance, believe it or not, that's Tom Berenger.

Just finished up the third part this morning. Amazing. Very, very well done. Kevin Costner killed.

I agree. I think it was an absolutely FANTASTIC series. For the first time in a long time, Costner was awesome. I thought all of the acting was really good, especially for a made-for-TV miniseries. Berenger did awesome, Boothe did great, and my favorite character was the bounty hunter turned sheriff who walked with the limp. He was badass.

And I disagree with some who said the love story played too big of a part in the show and that it would have only been a minor part in real life. Knowing what we know about how badly those 2 families hated each other, I have absolutely ZERO doubt that it was a really big effin' deal for something like that to happen and that it would have created a TON of tension between the families and those caught up in it.

I would love to see The Hisory Channel do more series like this. Think about all of the possibilities they could cover....everything from ancient times to random events and people who have slowly become somewhat forgotten or underappreciated by most. A show like this about the REAL Ben Franklin would be fantastic. The possibilities are endless.

Agree 100 percent. I'm a big Costner fan and think he does really well in roles like these. Open Range was fantastic. They really don't make enough westerns. How many bad westerns can you think of over the last 20 years.

I'm also a sucker for historical pieces and this was really, really great. Especially because so much of the history is so localized to this region.

Absolutely.... let's hope the ratings for this will be a "wake up call" for the History Channel.

  • Speaking of Costner, watched JFK the other night. Such an underrated movie and kind of unnerving the amount of evidence that may suggest the government had something to do with killing its own president.

  • Thought that might be Berrenger but I wasn't sure.

As far as the series goes it was good overall but I thought the ending was awful.

Also the killing and the whole feud became a little to much for me. But they were probably just portraying the feud like it was.

Overall like I said it was good.

From what I read, the series seemed pretty historically accurate.

I agree... the ending definitely sucked. Hanging Cotton-Top, while the others got life in prison, was just wrong.

However, Devil Anse Hatfield getting baptised was pretty cool.

He had hate and jelousy in his heart. The hate and jealousy damn near destroyed two families. Should have forgiven Devil Anse the moment he got back from the war and just been thankful to be alive.

  • I lived in eastern ky when I was much younger. Lived just outside of Pikeville, about 26 (although it always seemed like an hour and a half drive lol) miles away in a township/village called Kimper ky. Anyways, my parents knew a woman who was "Bad" Frank Phillips great grand daughter.

As for the show, wow. Awesome. I think it was Fish that posted about Costner and Open Range, but I agree 1000%. I gotta admit, I may have had a slight mancrush on Devil Anse's character. Lol. But several others fide really well. BERENGER! You kiddin me?! He may have stole the entire movie. Paxon showed some real range as well. Yeah there were a few inaccuracies (such as the reason the 3 McCoy boys held Johnsie over night intending to kill him at dawn...that wasnt over Roseanna...most the problems between Tolbert McCoy and Johnsie Hatfield were over liquor as they shared the same profession although Randel didn't know for years, but I understand you have to enhance the TV viewing experience as well. Overall, they imo, did one hell of a job introducing and painting a picture of both families. Imo Devil Anse and Randell McCoy were both men of honor in their own ways but were bound by family and neither could walk away until it was too late and so many had died.

Anyway, how awesome was that mini series? They continue to follow that model, bring in an excellent cast, choose another polarizing story to tell, and we will see the History channel evolve into something different than Your normal premium movie channels.

Damn I hope the learn front this lol

One could say just for arguments sake (I had already posted above that I believed they were both men of honor...just diff views of honor) that Randell McCoy himself was a coward who hid behind his "faith". It wasn't until 1888's battle of Grapevine that he ever actually got involved himself and that was only because grief, hate and jealousy had finally gotten to me. While Devil Anse lead his family, McCoy went the way of bounty hunters.

  • I thought the series was pretty good. I'd stop a bit short of "awesome," as others have suggested, but the acting was top-notch. How they put together that kind of cast for something that wound up airing on The History Channel is shocking.

I thought the script was weak in spots. They could have done this in less than three, two-hour episodes. Of course, it could have been more, too, with better writing.

Pet peeve: The Jonsy stuff with Roseanne. Total garbage, a Romeo-and-Juliett hook intended to keep women interested in watching. Let's face it: It's a pretty brutal, ugly, "man-type" story without that, and they're gunning for the biggest audience possible. (Don't get me started on that subject. It has ruined so many good things in the history of entertainment, most recently "The Office," which has sucked ass since the whole Jim-and-Pam storyline took precedence. But I digress...) Jonsy was supposedly a player from day one, and hooked up with whoever would have him at the time. He wasn't this "Mr. Sensitive" that they portrayed in the mini-series.

In his defense, I don't think that was any worse than manipulating the judicial system and the huge financial advantage (and manpower) that the Hatfields took advantage of. McCoy had to take special measures to level the playing field.

I think we're eye to eye on the entire miniseries. It was good but well short of awesome. I can't add anything to your comments about the lame romeo and juliet hook. That was spot on. This was no Roots or Lonesome Dove. That's for sure. Better acting than both of those though.
