Government shouldn't have anything to do with marriage. The government should classify people in long term committed relationships as civil union contracts(CUC) only and that's for people of the same sex or oppossite sex either way. And if you are stupid enough and want to be in a CUC with a couple people at the same time that's your business too.
Funny, rumor perculating out there is that Obama is going to use this as a way of dumping Biden and going after Hillary as his VP instead. I personally can't imagine her taking that position as it would not be good for her potential run in 2016.

If it was Obama that had a duel citizenship anywhere can you imagine the complete meltdown of the right? Switzerland is a beacon of socialized medicine and was the first country in the world to legalize marriage rights for same sex couples. That's the irony.

In switzerland they virtually no unemployment. Their social security system is invested in private accounts. Socialized medicine works when everybody pays taxes as they do in Switzerland. They also "means test" their social programs in switzerland.
Switzerland is what we should strive for in many ways. Unfortunately for our country we have a party on the left who desires to keep people reliant on government so they can remain in power and a party on the right that has an extreme element that wants to "cut everybody off"
Neither seems to recognize that the goal should be to get people as productive as possible as they are in Switzerland so people don't need food stamps or welfare. Imagine if we spent 90% less on welfare, food stamps, disability etc and likewise those same people relied on the government were productive. We could have free healthcare for everybody! The reason why socialized medicine has failed in the rest of europe is because they are in the financial state that our country is headed. huge social programs with no taxpayers!

So you expected a serious response to saying the US should be like Switzerland?
The Swiss pay more in taxes, as a percent of GDP than we do. They probably do have more and better social programs because they don't spend much of anything on their own protection. They are a free rider when it comes to national security--and have been so for over a hundred years. So if we wanted to disband our military, I expect we could have some nice social programs, too, and even cut back on our taxes. Of course we wouldn't last long, because there's not another benevolent superpower who would protect our sovereignty.
And I think my Harry Lime post was on point. Switzerland is orderly and prosperous, but they've done hardly anything to benefit the world.

Awful post. They do not pay more as a % of GDP. They are in line historically with the us. The reason they have a health care system as strong as they do is because they have a population that works and doesn't rely on the government for everything. Their system is not "free" either. Citizens pay for a significant portion of their care. It is not a true socialist single payer system. In this "awful" economic time their highest unemployment rate was around 5%. That's why. Not because they don't have much of a military but because they have a higher % of their population that is productive.
