It smells like microwaved homeless people in here.

  • I have to admit... "Someday" (alone) made me a fan of theirs. I love that song.

They have a few more catchy hits that's pretty cool... but I have to agree with you on the rest of it (for the most part).

Anyone else smell that???? Smells like some BS to me! Lol.

JJ is a closet Nickleback fan! Haha!

I wouldn't go see them live for free with backstage passes. Lol.

  • Hate to burst the Nickelback hating bubble, but the dudes are successful. The All the Right Reasons album was one of the most successful ever.

But, I dont know If I have liked a song of theirs in a few years.

LOL. He was definitely trying to let us know that he likes them but at the end he was scared to go against the grain.

Haha Whit... I guess I did come across that way. You got me bro!

Seriously tho... they only have 3 or 4 songs worth listening to. The last couple of years or so, has been garbage. "Rock Star" was the last decent song they put out. IMO

A lot of things that suck are successful. The pop and country charts are littered with examples.

I dont know how they can "suck". If songs hit the charts, that means people like it, making it popular. That is the whole point for most musicians..hit the charts. If you are good at your craft, you will make it. If you check out the top of the pop charts today, you'll see Adele, Gotye and Fun. I would say none of those artists would fit in with your "littered" example.

I see the Who mentioned all the time on here...I cannot stand all but a few songs of theirs, but I know they dont suck.

Btw, just because country isnt composed of old school BS anymore doesnt mean it sucks. Radio country isnt very good...but the same artists on the radio have great songs on their albums that never make it because they arent poppy enough, I can agree with that.

  • IMO chart popularity *generally* means you're putting out lowest common denominator crap for the masses. There are a few exceptions, and those are the ones who stand out over time. But nobody's going to play a Nickelback song/album in 10 years... in 20 years.

As for The Who, I realize you gotta account for varied tastes -- and The Who isn't for everyone -- but there's no denying the artistic ability and musicianship. They had three of the best players who have ever lived at their respective instruments.

  • Both of you guys make a great point. No one is right or wrong in this case... it's just a "personal taste" thing.

Btw, to answer my own op question... NO, I'm not going to the concert. I'm saving up for my Wildcat football Season Tickets. biggrin

  • Some good bands chart well. Not many nowadays but historically it happens. Pink Floyd is a great example. Radiohead is a more recent example. These are also exceptions to the rule that most bands that chart are terrible. Nickelback is a great example of business as usual. The idea that a band that charts automatically makes them good is just stupid.

There's a difference between being able to play or not. There's a difference between being able to compose and arrange a good song or and not being able to. Just because most people in the world can't tell the difference, it doesn't mean the difference doesn't exist.

I think we've arrived at a state in music (and we've been here a while) where meritocracy no longer exists. The previous poster said that if you're good, you'll make it. I can show you thousands of examples of cases where that's not true. It used to be better, but it's never been perfect. Elvis, the Beatles and Stones, Stevie Wonder, U2--all had big careers, but so did Pat Boone, Johnny Mathis, Madonna, and Nickelback.

  • Well they have something that makes them successful...whether it be the marketing, entertaining skills. catchy songs...something gets them over the hump, they werent just picked to be the shitty band who makes it big!

IF JDrum were to have a blog, with great information, skilled writing, nice layout etc but had zero readers I'd say he sucks at blogging.

American Idol style. The problem with the music industry and society as a whole. Kids like whatever they're told is popular. The music industry is dying and I love it.

  • Entertainment value has become a much more important part to musicians.

American Idol is weird...the people they vote off vs keep sometimes is crazy.

Keyword "industry." The music is still alive and well. Just have to know where to find it.

99.99999% of anything decent comes from DIY shunning the mainstream music industry.

  • I'll preface this by saying I don't "get" the Beatles, and I'm not a big fan of Led Zeplin, but I love hair bands. I like Nickelback ok. I have a couple of their albums. Radio plays their songs into the ground like they did with 3 Doors Down and Taylor Swift. That's a problem and feeds the anti-NB sentiment. The only problem I have with them is they're pop rock and they act like they're metal.
