OT, Wow Reds are getting Serious about 2012

  • Looks like they are giving up T.Wood and a couple of prospects for the best left handed reliever in the NL. Marshall just has one year so looks like they are doing all they can to max out this two year window.

Report: Reds, Cubs agree to trade | Cincinnati Reds

According to Bruce Levine of ESPN, the Cubs and Reds have agreed in principle to trade sending Sean Marshall to Cincinnati for lefty Travis Wood and two minor leaguers. According to Levine, the players involved must pass medicals first. Marshall, 30, was 6-6 with 2.26 ERA last year. He struck out 79, walked 17 and [...]

  • Hope they plan on putting forth an effort to sign him to a longer contract. . . Really like Marshall. . .

  • I agree but I don't see how. I'm sure he will make a killing as a FA next year. Also, the reds wouldn't get a compensation pick when he walks. Gotta hand it to Walt and the Reds. You can't keep waiting for prospects to get it done. You have an MVP in Votto for two more years, Phillips for at least this year so why not try and make it happen. Get some more fans to show upon 2012 with winning baseball then you have more cash to spend in 2013 so maybe you get a chance to extend Votto. Try and strike while you have the chance.

Like that kid a lot. Live arm. Really good LH setup guy who also has K ability to close in spots.

Walt's going for it. I like it. Fans deserve it.

In all seriousness. With the pathetic lineup the reds fielded last year how can reds fans think they have a shot with no
Changes and an aging rolen? The cardinals bring back a top five
    Pitcher and their lineup
Will still be the clear cut best in the Nl central.

"Pathetic lineup" was 7th in MLB in only stat that matters: runs scored.

Come back when you have some better smack. :)

Only stat that matters? What about wins and losses? The lineup was feast or famin. Only two guys hit CLOSE to .300 who had 300 or more at bats.

My MLB scoreboard shows runs as declaring the winner. Sounds like you're living in a fantasy baseball world.

We'll talk again next season when the Reds own the Cards again. ;)

    Merry Christmas,

    Let's talk twice.
Once in April when reds fans are interested in baseball and again i september when nobody in Cindy cares about baseball because the reds are 18 games back...

And btw. Who had the best offense in the national league last year?

;-)..... Sean marshall is a savior!!!!!!!

I would encourage you to polish up on your reading comprehension skills. I said that the cardinals LINEUP will still be the clear cut best in the nl central. NOBODY can argue that the cardinals didn't have the best offense in the national league last year. Nobody can argue that they didn't have the best lineup, from top to bottom, than anybody else in the nl central last year. They will arguably have just as good a lineup next year considering beltran put up as good of statistics as Pujols did in most categories. You will also likely have a healthy david freese all year at 3rd and alan craig will return in april from his nagging knee issue....

Losing Pujols will hurt, but with the revamped bullpen, one of the deepest rotations in baseball with two legit aces at the top and a very good lineup, the cardinals will be the favorite in the central.

  • Cards the best lineup in baseball? That's crazy. They didn't even have the best lineup in their division(Brewers). That's what makes what they did even more remarkable. Jeff why didn't the Reds take advantage of the Braves collapse?

Because we didn't have a good year last year. . . pretty simple. . . Cards got hot at the right time, and got very fortunate that the Braves had an epic all time collapse. . . Beltran and Berkman are still huge question marks in my opinion and nothing is guaranteed with either of them. . . Losing Pujols is HUGE no matter how cards fans wanna spin it. . . Also it's no guarantee that Wainwright will return to his old form, sure their is a good chance it might happen, but it isn't guaranteed either. . . The entire division is a giant question mark right now, nothing is "clear cut" anything in the NL Central, and it's pretty absurd to think so. . .

    Huh Carl? The cardinals were
Universally recognized as having the best lineup in the national league last year and the stats back it up.

And JD... Your last post is spoken like a true reds fan. Basically, you have to hope the cardinals fall flat on their face next season.

All reports point to wainwright being wayyyy ahead of schedule. He was pitching off the mound before the end of the world series.

Beltran and berkman both go Into the off season healthy.

To top it off, the cardinals are very very deep at all positions. Whereas last season they had big holes when somebody got hurt, next season the cardinals will be able to put multiple solid lineups on the field. I don't see berkman or Beltran starting more than 130 games. The cardinals will have 5 productive outfielders In Craig, jay, holiday, Schumacher and Beltran. Schumacher can playn2nd too. They will be able to spell berkman with Craig when they face lefties and desalso can play 2nd, short, or 3rd at a very high level. Freese will be healthy going into the spring training as well.

The record the cardinals posted last season wins the central almost every year. Only jealousy allows somebody to discount what the cardinals did. With the brewers roster being gutted and the cardinals having the best roster, top to bottom in the central, it's hard to see the central being competitive unless the cardinals have multiple major injuries.

  • hoptown you're all hopped up on purple drank or somethin. They had the worst defense in the league. Every leadoff hitter they tried couldn't hit. Instead of upgrading the SS position they're sticking with old used up Furcal. He won't play 50 games next year. Same as his last 5 years. Berkmans resurgence was pure fluke. He hadn't played a full season since he was playing t-ball. That catches up with him this year. Beltran is a joke and will only play 50 games if he's really lucky. And even if he does play it won't even come close to what you lost in Pujols. Instead of hiring a top notch manager with experience the morons hired a guy that hasn't managed a game on any level. They do have bright spots in the lineup but to call them the hands down best lineup in baseball is insane, laughable, and ridiculous. I don't mean that as an insult. It's just a statement of truth.

You are entitled to your opinion no matter how much it is based on wishful thinking and crack smoking...

I never said they had the best lineup in baseball but they do arguably have the best lineup in the national league and easily have the best lineup in the nl central.

You seem to be drunk, smoking crack or just plain stupid.

But when the cardinals were healthy they were dynamite. Schuacker was a solid leadoff man all year with a very good obp and once they made the furcal trade their defense was solid. With Beltran moving to the outfield in place of berkman they will be solid in all 3 positions in the outfield.
