REAL MEN... iron their own damn clothes...

  • (or maybe it's just a Marine or Military man thing).

I just had this convo with my son. He is 19 and just starting to pay more attention to detail when it comes to his dress attire... he never cared about a few wrinkles before or having creases. On New Years Eve, he was dressing up a bit for a party and asked his mom to iron his shirt. Her quick reply was, GET YOUR DAD TO DO IT... he does a much better job. She is right... she learned that rule early in our marriage (20 years ago). She thought she would be nice and do what she thought was her "wifely" duty... and iron my dress clothing. I damn near had a come-apart... YOU NEVER ATTEMPT TO IRON A MARINES ATTIRE... EVER!!! We don't give a damn if anyone thinks it's a job for women or not. We are very meticulous about our appearance in uniform or any dress attire... they have to be perfect and with perfect creases (starch is usually required). We have to appear squared away... and can only trust ourselves to achieve perfection. No offense to our ladies and their ability to iron... there are just some things that are "hands the hell off" . Since then, I do pretty much all the ironing (even for them)... if they expect to look squared away and professional.

The Marine Corps has an everlasting effect in more ways than one... and distills certain life-long habits. Anyone dare to admit their domestic duties... ironing, cooking, vacuuming, etc?

  • Same here. I will not allow my wife to touch my S.O. uniform. Anything else is okay, but when I have to iron my S.O. uniform I do it. She doesn't understand, and I really don't give a damn.
She actually does a great job when she irons clothes, but like you, my uniform is off limits. I don't let her shine my work shoes either, as I'm very particular about how my shoes look too.
Yeah, I guess being 'military' men, it is something that is just hardwired into our consciousness in basic training & AIT. That, and learning to hate your drill sergeant. LOL!
I was ragging on my part-time guy the other day about this same exact topic. He rolls into work looking like he slept in his uniform, and his work shoes look like they've been shined with a Hershey bar. Plus, he doesn't have enough backside to properly fill out his uniform anyway, he's always hitching up his pants because they're sliding down his backside. He's just a friggin' mess, that kid.

  • Not necessarily a military thing; I was never in the service, but I also do all the ironing in our household (though about 85% of it is mine anyway).

  • I will iron, vacuum and wash dishes. Also, I usually do the cooking. There aren't too many things better than making a delicious, juicy steak.

  • I've always ironed my own clothes because I'm not afraid to admit I'm really good at it. I probably picked up the habit from my dad. Not a single woman in my family knows how to iron. Not.one.single.woman. lol. It's always just Dad or I having to do all the ironing for our large family. I grew up being dad's backup. If he wasn't around or at work, I had to iron my mom or sisters' clothes lol. My dad likewise wore the uniform in service, so he's got a reason for that habit. Dad also is the only one that sews in the family. But that, too, is a military thing, I think. I once watched my dad sew up his own wound, so there ya go.

Now that I'm married, my wife actually doesn't know how to iron properly either. So I'm no doubt going to carry that tradition in our household.

  • I'm the worst ironer in the world, thankfully we have a maid for that, I'm going to suffer when we leave VN!

  • Darn, QLC......... you have you a mama-san, huh?

  • I don't iron shit. I press my clothes. Most of the time though if its some kind of dress attire outside of church I will take that junk to the cleaners. Also if I'm having something pressed its always heavy starch. Little known fact of the War household, I do all the laundry including folding. I don't like how the navy taught my wife to fold so I do it the correct way.

  • I try to buy clothes that don't need ironing. If you get the clothes out of the dryer as soon as they're done you can usually get them folded before they wrinkle. I'm single and do it all.

  • YOU BET YOUR ASS REAL MEN IRON CLOTHES!

I send most of my work clothes to the cleaners (I wear suites) and I also dig heavy starch. I also have some housekeeping help for my wife 3 or 4 days during the week, and while she does an outstanding job ironing clothes she and everyone else knows that NO ONE touches my clothes! LOL. If I didn't iron it, its not right. Hell, I iron everything ...Ill iron a t shirt.

I've done that too... but at least I can say I've never ironed my socks or underwear.

  • LOL! I kinda think ironing a tee-shirt is a little bit over the top there, tommy. But it's okay, if it works for you, then have at it brother! LOL!

If mama-san means maid, err, yeah lol, its pretty damned cheap out here to get a maid to clean the apartment and do laundry service, just not worth doing it yourself considering the price!

So you never pressed your underwear for a health and comfort inspection?

I've ironed my underwear and my dress socks a couple of times. Once I get in the zone its all getting ironed. I actually iron my wifes clothes. Nobody in her family knows what an iron is...sloppy people.

65 bucks a month each for laundry service washed/ironed/back in the wardrobe and the apartment cleaned/pots washed up twice a week, pretty sweet =)

Can't beat that. Although I wouldn't want other people handling my clothes or really in my apartment to begin with but that is a great deal. Its definitely hard to keep on top of everything when you work all the time.

  • Yup, its sweet, the only problem is you get used to it, I was backpacking around Asia last year and I was down to my last pair of boxers before realising that I had to my own laundry, I hadn't done it in over a year, it was weird lol! If we move to Japan next year like is looking likely it will be problematic as we won't be affording a maid over there lol!
