Stage 4 Non-Alcoholic Cirrhosis

  • Does anyone know anything about this? I've done some googling but a lot of the info on prognosis is pretty vague. I've read everything from 1 year to 20 years life expectancy. The non-alcoholic type is an important distinction. It's my understanding that this type is not quite as serious as the typical alcoholic kind. Still incurable and fatal. And transplant is not an option.

Damn, that doesn't even sound good. Hope neither you or one of your family/friends have this.

  • My mom. She got diagnosed today.

  • Sorry to hear about that.

I know the liver has an unbelievable ability to regenerate itself. Life expectancy might have to do with how well she follow a particular diet or how well she's able to do what the doctors tell her to do. Life expectancy might have something to do with what caused the cirrhosis in the first place.

All the best to your mother. PRAYERS!

Thanks. In earlier stages you're right. In stage 4 there's nothing they can do. She can't get a transplant because she has other health issues that make her ineligible. She has a muscle disease and they give her steroids to help that. Medications known to cause this. But they never checked her for cirrhosis. That doesn't make sense to me. And I'm talking years and years. They should have been checking that at least once a year. It takes a long time to get to stage 4. If they had checked properly they could have caught it earlier and then things could have been done. Changing her meds and other things. I'll have to check more things out but I'm pissed about it and if things are how they seem to me that doctor is going to have a lawsuit coming. Too soon to worry about that though right now.

Thanks Mike. And to your grandma. Bad news all around here today.

  • Definitely should have been monitoring live enzymes being on steroids. Extensive blood work should have been done constantly. Man thats scary.

My mother is just a year younger.

    tWhit

  • They did check her enzymes from time to time but the surgeon that diagnosed her said that enzymes doesn't always catch it. They can do other tests though. Like I said I don't know enough about everything yet. It's really early and we don't know what's what quite yet. She had her gall bladder removed a week ago. While he was in there he took a biopsy and it came back stage 4 non-alcoholic cirrhosis. He's sending the info to her specialist that's been dealing with her muscle disease and we have to see what he says before we know what's exactly what. In her situation they should have been taking a biopsy every couple years anyway. That's just me using common sense. I'm not sure if that's common or not.

What muscle disease does she have? If you don't want to divulge it here, you can send me a PM. My grandpa has a very bad one, as well.

I have a very close friend who has suffered from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease for several years. He is on a transplant list but has to get much worse actually receive the transplant. He can only work about 4 hours a day now and the hot months are absolutely brutal on him.

Non-alcohol liver diseases typically progress much slower. I'm surprised that a transplant is not an option.. .Why are they saying that a transplant won't work?

The only "liver test" they can do is the enzymes. It isn't practical to do the biopsy if the enzymes are ok...

This is awful news and I feel terrible for you. Liver disease is awful. In the long "non-alcohol" types it is typically a slow process. She may still live a long time. If she isn't showing symptoms of liver disease then she may be able to deal with the disease very well.

Thanks. Well that's something to hope for at least. She can't have the transplant because of her other medical problems.

    Thanks suncat.

This really is awful. I feel terrible. Liver disease is tough because your body can endure a bad liver for a long time but the quality of life isn't very good at all.

She was having it bad for a few weeks there and they decided to take her gall bladder. After that she's felt great. You could hear it in her voice. Just feeling a lot better. We thought that maybe the reason the liver looked so bad was due to the bile backing up. Trying to be positive. Stage 4 cirrhosis was the worst case scenario. I wasn't even considering it honestly. On 2nd thought I guess inoperable late stage cancer would have been the worst case scenario.
