TIPPERS... What's the going rate for a bartender or waitress?

  • My bill came to $53.00 last night and I gave a $15.00 tip. The look on the waiters face suggested it wasn't enough... maybe I just misread his reaction. He could've just been having a bad day, but it was enough to get me thinking... "did I tip enough?" I thought I did. The service was just fine... I had no complaints. DID I TIP ENOUGH? What's the going rate for good service? Sometimes I tip more... sometimes less. It depends on the service... and my wallet size.

  • Yeah, I was a server/bartender for like 7 years, and 20% is a good tip, anything over that is really good. 15% I could live with, and below that it usually pissed me off a little, unless I just knew I did something pretty bad. . . Usually if your ordering drinks individually like $1 per drink for a tip is pretty standard . . .

  • If he wasn't happy with a 30% tip then he didn't deserve it to begin with!!!

15% is a common and decent tip....20% is very generous...anything over 25% is extremely generous.

Maybe he was surprised at the nice tip. If not, he was probably just an unhappy liberal....jk biggrin

Bringin' you the truth....no matta how bad it hurts!

  • I agree with both of you guys. I thought I was leaving a good tip. I have no clue what the look on his face about.

  • 15% is typically unless the service is 5* over the top and then I will go more. If service is bad I will drop the tip to a lower amount and even not pay anything if the service was horriable.

By the way how did the restaurant industry con us into paying part of their employees salaries in the first place?

I have often wondered the same thing. I worked as a waiter for a while in college and often wondered, how is it that I am only getting paid $2.13/hr since I'm a waiter, and have to hope the customers tonight understand how much to tip (i.e. 20% of the non-alcohol portion of the tab + $1/drink for the alcohol, or 20% for the alcohol total if it is bottles of wine). I don't know when it became the right thing to do for the customer to pay extra for their meal to pay the majority of the salary of the wait staff (and hostess staff and bartenders, since they get tipped out a percentage of your waiter's tips at the end of the shift as well).

On another note, am I the only person who constantly wonders if you're supposed to tip this person or that person? For example.....movers, TV/satellite installation guys, furniture delivery guys, etc.

  • I had a cool math teacher in one of my younger days. He tought everyone how to tip. He told all the girls in the class that if they were ever on a date and their boyfriend tipped a female waitress over 20% that they should dump him.

I guess you are saying the bartender was smoking to give her well over 25%! biggrin

I've never even thought about tipping movers, TV/satellite installation guys, furniture delivery guys, etc. Am I wrong?

For sure! Google is your friend there.

My wife and I frequently carry in from a couple of our favorite restaurants. I think the going rate for a person who carries your food to your car is around 10%. I guess I don't understand why. The walk from their door is about 10 feet. I have no prob tipping 10% if the girl is johnny on the spot without having to wait, but it doesn't seem like a tough job to bring me a bag of food, take my credit card and then come back to the car and I sign them a tip.

Here is how I tip the items you mentioned:
Movers - Dunno - Never moved
Cable Guy - Zero. They charge the customer for the trip 99% of the time. In the rare exception they dont typically there was something wrong with the service.
Furniture Delivery Guys - typically I pay ahead of time for delivery so I don't tip here.

Yeah, a lot of professions other than waiters, bartenders and golf caddies work for (and expect) tips. I know movers typically expect it, but I can't figure out if guys like TV installers, etc. do. GOOGLE, here I come.....

  • The one that blows my mind, is Sonic Burger. I'm not even talking about the spaces where you park to eat... you kind of expect to leave a tip there I guess. My problem is with the drive-thru service. I mean... where else are we ever expected to tip in a drive-thru? Just because they don't have an actual window to serve you from, we are suppose to leave a tip for someone taking 5 steps out the door to serve you at the curb? I like their food at times, but tipping in the drive-thru bugs the hell out of me... but I STILL TIP EVERY TIME! banghead

  • I tip 33-50% if my total is under $15 but anything over that and you're looking at a 15-20% tip on the dot, depending on the restaurant. I just use the tip calculator in my phone. Now delivery tips I am extremely generous.

  • Have to say as the resident English person i HATE tipping at least in the way its done in America, but in England we have minimum wage so that our waiters and bar staff are on a lot more than yours are. It really shouldn't be up to us to pay their wages I have to say!

I think its awful that its a set amount, 15%, 20%, etc, in England you tip what you think you should. If its good service I will leave a few pounds, if its not I won't.

I remember once in America receiving the worst service I've ever had in my life and the girl threatening to call the cops on me because the law said I had to tip her!

  • Im always confused if I should tip the grocery carryout kid. At Martins they always carry your groceries out for you and load them as well. I am always confused if I should give them a couple bucks but I never do. I once gave a waitress a 100% tip. The food was good, she was better.

I'd guess you just misread him, sometimes people have funny expressions... I can't imagine anyone being upset over that, that's close to 30%.

The restaurant industry is pretty corrupt about that stuff. Not only do you pay the majority of their salary, but the server also doesn't get to keep all of the tips they get in many restaurants. Many restaurants do tip sharing. They calculate the tip share from the amount of sales the server does. When I worked at the Texas Roadhouse it was not uncommon for me to have to pay $20 worth of tipshare. So I would make $100 bucks on a Saturday working from 4-12 and $20 of the $100 would be taken away for tipshare and I'd leave with $80. The tipshare goes to the bus boys and to the hostesses so that way the restaurant can be cheap and not pay those positions as much. This is something to keep in mind when you're leaving a tip. If you order food and drinks then leave no tip or a tiny tip then the server actually loses money by serving your table. If they deserve that then it is understandable, but a good server shouldn't be punished like that.

Also... as far as the to go person goes... they do a pretty decent amount and can be even busier than a server. They take the orders, go to the back and they box up all of your food and then bag it. They make sure that all of the food is correct and that you get everything you asked for. They typically add some bread and stuff and make sure you have drinks, condiments, and silverware. Keeping the orders in line and running all from the front to the back to get the orders and to set them up is a pretty tasking day. Still, they don't deserve a ton. I would say something like 10%. They might not like that, but they make good money doing that job, and it is probably one of the better paying jobs in a restaurant. I did the job a long time ago, when I was 17 or so and I never expected a tip. To get one was nice, but it wasn't something I expected. Of course, I didn't get a ton of to go orders. Now, however, it has become a pretty big business and those working it have come to expect decent tips.

  • Thanks for the "tip" Comebakats. I was not aware of the tipshare thing being so common. Also, I will probably start tipping more for "to-go" orders (carryout). I normally do not.

I usually put whatever coins I get back in the little tip jar they have set out. But I do not think tipping is expected there but if you feel generous they will take it.

  • movers you should tip. Cable guys, hell no. Starbucks, only if the girl is really cute and i've got some change ;)

It is kind of an odd thing to think about tipping waiters and bartenders. But I can tell you most people wouldn't work in the restaurant industry for minimum wage. It's one of the few non-professional jobs where you can make a decent living compared to working at a fast food place or doing retail.

I hated working at automatic tipshare places. I would tip the bussers and hostesses who took care of me. That's how it should be done. I make more money you get a bigger tip. It always cracked me up seeing waiters(who live on tips) getting pissed because THEY have to tip out. I mean really?
