Type 2 Diabetes ...

  • I just found out today that I have it. I had some blood tests done last Friday and my Dr called me with the results earlier today. I also, have high cholesterol and low testosterone levels. I can deal with the cholesterol and testosterone... and do what's necessary to get those back to a normal, more healthy level. It's the newly, diagnosed diabetic condition that worries me. I start on a medication (metformin) tomorrow that I'm supposed to take for life (I think)... and I have to learn how (or what) to eat all over again. That's the crucial... more difficult task ahead. This runs in the family, but I know the seriousness of it can vary. The reason for this post is... I hope that someone, who knows more about this (T2D), can offer a bit of comforting advice.
Any helpful information will be greatly appreciated. TIA.

  • My dad has type 2...he was a little iffy at 1st about it, but now everything is so routine its not a big deal..(relatively speaking) He knows what to eat, can feel when he is gonna be low on sugar, knows what to do etc...Really hasnt slowed him down at all, ad he even has to do the insulin shots and whatnot.

You should do fine once you figure out what all the food types do to your levels.

  • I had to re-type my reply 2-3x here, JJ. I don't really know what to say except hang in there and best wishes.

I can somewhat relate because my heart surgery 5 years ago completely changed my life as far as diet is concerned. I had never given two thoughts to what I ate before. You get used to it much quicker than you would think, though.

My father has Type 2, bro. He has to take insulin every day, as well as a few more medicines. HE doesn't watch what he eats, and his sugar can go sky high sometimes. Do yourself a favor and eat healthy, get a little more active, because the more you're active, the less it's going to build up into your system. You'll experience feet swelling, things like that.. power through it. Whatever you do, don't let it get you down, because if it does, you won't ever get back to what you're wanting to do, physically. Good luck, bro, you can master it.

    Keep Calm & Stoops On..

  • Thanks guys... I truly appreciate every personal comment posted. I'm off to the pharmacy now to start my new meds... then, I'm off to work. That new way of life begins today... I can handle it.

    cheers

Good luck, man. It'll be a big adjustment, but you can do it!

  • Hang in there! You can usually manage it fairly well with the right diet and exercise, which is something we should all probably pay more attention to anyway.

Check this book out, it comes highly recommended:

Thanks BigT. My wife has been freaking out the past 24 hours. She said we WILL buy that book. It should be a great help... I'm looking for all the reading material I can get my hands on.

    Thanks again!

Wow... I never knew you went through that JD. I'm glad things have turned out well. I bet you feel better than ever since you've started eating better. I hope to get to where you are soon.

Thanks for the kind words! cheers

Yeah, I'm pretty sure alcohol is going to have to be in only small amounts now. . . My grandmother has it and she has had it my entire life. . . she now has an insulin pump that she uses instead of the daily injections. . . She can just program it as to how much sugar she is going to eat and the pump injects the according amount of insulin. . .

The main thing is that as long as you are making an effort to do the healthy thing, then it usually works out okay for that person. . . The ones that have the most trouble with this disease are the people that don't adjust their lifestyle accordingly. . .

  • Yeah my grandmother was diagnosed with Diabetes when she was 16. When she was 53 she decided she didnt want to be a slave to a medicine any more. She lasted 11 years with the last 4 laying in a bed blind, with dementia, and kidney failure setting in. Stay the course no matter how aggravating it is.

  • You are right about that Brad.... alcohol is not good for a diabetic. Once I get it under control... a couple of drinks every once in a while won't hurt. I think there may be some lite beers on the market for diabetics... not really sure about that though.

Eric, you are right too... as long as I do everything possible to get (and remain) healthy, things should work out okay for me. My wife and son will keep me motivated... if I ever get careless. Maybe I should join one of those Health Bootcamps (Military style)

Nah... been there, done that. biggrin

I may take a trip to Va one day, but it won't be for any thrashing... I appreciate your offer though. My God-daughter lives in Springfield, Va. On our last vacation, we picked her up and went to Va Beach.... then, I gave my family a tour of D.C. and Quantico Marine Base.

  • You are lucky to learn about it early. I was misdiagnosed for years (I had Lyme disease with similar symptoms). The one thing you must always be aware of is that diabetes ALWAYS GETS WORSE if you do not listen to your doctors. At some point you are going to think that since your medicine is controlling it, it's ok to do what you want. Sadly, it is not.
The best remedy for diabetes is YOUR DIET and the related weight control. I am an authority in this illness, after 25 years and countless medicines (I take two different insulin shots several times a day, plus pills).

I hope you hit up the Museum. I just took my son about a year ago. I have a great pic of him standing on the "yellow footprints" with a look of complete shock, which he just naturally made. I live 2 hrs south of Quantico on 95.

Yeah man, we definitely hit the museum... fascinating as hell. It was cool driving through base too (at Quantico) and showing my son the barracks I lived in, the MP Station, our patrol areas and the Gates I stood guard at. It brought back great memories.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I guess I am quite lucky. I appreciate your comments... I will take it to heart and stay on top of this thing. I wish you all the best in maintaining control of your diabetic condition. I only hope I have half the strength you have... it will be a blessing.
